This is newbie VB question. My son is learning VB and I am learning with him. We have RichEdit control application (non WPF), where we input text, formatting its Style (bold, italic, underline, etc.). Our next task is to save the text together with its attributes into the file. The question is: what type of serialization is preferred at this case?
View 3 RepliesI'm looking for a method of generating unique identifiers for a record class being created locally and then persisted in various formats (XML, SQL, etc.) I've seen people using DateTime and GetHashCode, but that seems to lend itself to duplicate identifiers depending upon the sample size. GUID is a bit overkill, as I don't need anything that unique (large) at the global level. I'm also aware of using GUIDs and GetHashCode to get the size down a bit, but duplicates tend to crop up here as well. Any best practice or method for generating simple unique identifiers?
View 3 RepliesI have a situation in which I must execute a dynamically built stored procedure against tables that may, or may not be in the database. The data retrieved is then shunted to a VB.Net backed ASP based report page. By design, if the tables are not present in the database, the relevant data is automatically hidden on the report page. Currently, I'm doing this by checking for the inevitable error, and hiding the div in the catch block. A bit kludgy, but it worked.I can't include the VB code-behind, but the relevant stored procedure is included below.However, a problem with this method was recently brought to my attention when, for no apparent reason, the div was being hidden even though the proper data was available. As it turned out, the user trying to select the table in the dynamic SQL call didn't have the proper select permissions, an easy enough fix once I could track it down.First and foremost - is there a better way to check for a missing table than through catching the error in the VB.Net codebehind? All things considered, I'd rather save the error checking for an actual error. Secondly, is there a preferred method to squirrel out a particular OLE DB error out of the general object caught by the try->catch block other than just checking the actual stack trace string?
SQL Query - The main gist of the code is that, due to the design of the database, I have to determine the name of the actual table being targeted manually. The database records jobs in a single table, but each job also gets its own table for processing data on the items processed in that job, and it's data from those tables I have to retrieve. Absolutely nothing I can do about this setup, unfortunately. [code]
I am making a FlowLayoutControl panel which the user can edit by dragging controls onto it in any required order. The controls are mainly (subclassed) Buttons and (subclassed) TextBoxes, plus perhaps a few labels. There might easily be several hundred of them interspersed at random. I need to be able to save the FlowLayoutPanel and/or its list of controls to a file, and then restore the whole thing again later when needed.If I am not mistaken, this will involve serialization -- a subject about which I presently know next to nothing. I have tried trawling the web for introductions and relevant examples, but I am suffering from information overload. There is so much written about serialization that I don't know where to start.As I can't spend too much time on this, I'm hoping there is some simple way through all the complications. Can anyone here explain, or point me to, the basics needed for saving a control like my one?
View 5 RepliesI have just learned about serialization, and looks very appealing as a way to save application data without much maintenance overhead.But I have one issue that I would like answered before I start coding.If a user saves a project via serialization, and then the program gets an update, say one that might have added or removed a property for an object.If the user then tries to load his previous project with the updated program, since the object now has a modified structure won't it fail to load from the previously serialized data?Would there be any way to recover/convert that saved data to the current object structure?

I just have a simple vb.net website that need to call a Sub that performs a very long task that works with syncing up some directories in the filesystem (details not important).
When I call the method, it eventually times out on the website waiting for the sub routine to complete. However, even though the website times out, the routine eventually completes it's task and all the directories end up as they should.
I want to just prevent the timeout so I'd like to just call the Sub asynchronously. I do not need (or even want) and callback/confirmation that it ran successfully.[code]...

Im a user of VB 2005. I had a problem with Simply run a project (Even Without any code in it). Indeed when i Creat a new project and i want to run and debug it (with F5). The information box show that cant debug. and because of that, the program may not run.The Message in information box is here (in Appendix).I try it with VB 2008 (But didnt work). View 1 RepliesI'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum or has already been asked, but I'm having a problem creating what should be a relatively simple code for an Excel Project. Essentially, the code is supposed to check if a certain column has Y in it and then copy that entire row onto another sheet and then move on to check the rest of the original sheet. This version of the code seems to do everything but actually populate the cells with the information. Every other attempt I've made has ended with "Application-Based or Object Based Errors". I've worked on this code for a few days now and I just can't seem to get it right. What am I doing wrong?

I have created a simple project where I have two forms, one a data entry form where a client name, address, city, state and zip are entered into textboxes. Then, the user clicks a button to add all this data to the datatable via a newrow. The second form includes a datagridview to show the datatable. However, I cannot get the code below to work to update the datatable. I have a button to click to check to see if the data is entered and it returns an error that no row exists.

View 3 RepliesI have 4 rounding options: None, Standard, Up, Down If they choose None and the number is 108.7879, I just want to display 108.78 with no rounding. I know I probably can use Math.Ceil for Up and Math.Floor for Down, but I am not sure what to use for None or Standard.

Which language is preferred by most developers especially targeting .NET & silverlight? Is it C# or VB.NET?
Are there any advantages/disadvantages of both languages when compared with each other?
I have adopted a technique where I pass existing objects to forms so that they can display the object's content and allow the user to alter it if necessary. The form is not bound to the object, so when it comes time to act, the form sweeps up the content of its controls and puts them into the object. The object is then validated and any issues reported to the user. If the object is valid, it may be handed back to the caller so the caller can refresh a view/list/etc.
So far, so good. However, if the form's content, or lack of, creates an invalid object and the user does not correct it, maybe cancelling the form, there's a chance the form will hand an invalid object back to the caller. This is not good.
Essentially I'm looking for an elegant and efficient way of either leaving the object as it was or rolling back if the user cancels the form/action.
I have considered a range of techniques, each with many pros and cons. I'm keen to consider some other views.
I need to add attributes to certain controls in a Windows Forms project. It needs to look something like this: [code] I can go in and edit the designer file to get more-or-less the desired effect, but those designer files sometimes come with the caveat that they are automatically-generated files. I'm worried that the designer might overwrite any changes that I make to the file. That said, is there a way to add attributes to controls using the designer or is there some way that I can add the attributes in a separate file?
View 1 RepliesI'm modifying an existing form in Visual Basic 2010 Express and attempting to work out some small kinks I've noticed. The one that I'm having an issue with is getting the form to completely fill the screen without the border going off screen. When I set the form's Size values at W:1024,H:768 the page always opens a little off. I tried setting the size a little smaller, W:1020,H:764, and it still does not perfectly fill the screen. Does the Size value include the border pixels or are the border pixels added to the form's Size value? Is there another value somewhere that could be affecting this?

The weird thing is the code compiles, but on rumtime I get a type case error.
I'm working on a larger VB application (framework v3.5) where the compile time continues to get slower and slower the larger it grows. It currently takes about 7 minutes to compile just the extensions project. We have other similar projects in C# that don't experience the slow compile time.

View 2 RepliesTrying to make a simple browser with some simple addon's. What Ive done is setup a menu(forum) for the user to enter their email providers web address and it will save it in a xml file. When they click on the email link, it should load the email xml iformation and place that info in the tb_html.text and navigate. I keep getting a null exception and im not sure what going on here.
