.net - VB Unreachable Code Error/warning?
Mar 31, 2009
I've been mostly working with VB.Net for over a year and just noticed this Am I going insane, or does VB.Net NOT have an "Unreachable code" warning? The following compiles quite happily with nary a warning or error, even though there is a return between the two writeline calls.

I am using the Streamwriter to send simple messages to other machines in my office. But i hit across a problem today which i never thought about. If the computer im sending the message to, doesn't have the listener running, the sender crashes out. Is there anyway to trap the error, and deal with it nicely (i.e a message box) instead of the app quiting?

"Access of shared member, constant member, enum member or nested type through an instance; qualifying expression will not be evaluated".I have this message showing up that references this code in the keyup event:[code]I am just testing the trapping of keys right now. The code still works but I am uncomfortable with an unresolved warning.

I am trying to send an email through a remote Microsoft Exchange Server with an application I am making in VB2005. I have access to the server, as well as the required credentials. The only part I am unsure about is the SMTP port number. The error i get is: "Failure sending mail."inner: "Unable to connect to the remote server" inner: "A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable network xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:xx"

I am converting a VB6 program to VB express and am having a couple of problems. One of them is a problem with the variable "strEncTemp". I have the warning "Variable strEncTemp is used before it has been assigned a value", and I can't assign a value to this variable without creating issues. It also seems that a null value is being returned and the code produced by this routine is corrupt. This seems to be the last issue I have in converting the code. I tried setting it to 0 but it then shuts down the program with an error. This is the portion of code that has the warning and produces a null value. [Code]

I'm automating Visio 2003 from a VB.NET app. My code looks like this (with the uninteresting stuff removed):
Dim objApp As New Microsoft.Office.Interop.Visio.InvisibleApp
objApp.Settings.ShowFileOpenWarnings = False
Dim objDoc As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Visio.Document
objDoc = objApp.Documents.Open(VisioFilename)
I've found that the last line causes Visio to raise a hidden MessageBox saying:
Macros in this document are disabled because the security level is high, and the macros have not been digitally signed or verified as safe. To run the macros, you can either have them signed or change your security level.Since this is going to be running on computers I don't control with files I don't control neither of those options works for me. I really don't care that the macros are disabled, I'm just using Visio to convert the file from it's native format to SVG. I certainly don't want to suggest to users that they lower the security level, nor would I want to lower it for them.
As you can see from my code above, I turn off file open warnings but that doesn't seem to include the macro warning. Since I'm using Visio.InvisibleApp it turns out the warning isn't displayed to the user. Running a visible instance of Visio won't help because I'm creating a batch converter, even if the message was visible it means the user would have to click OK for each file. That would make the batch conversion feature essentially useless.
I see that the Visio class has a VBAEnabled property but it's read only. If there was a way I could just turn off VBA when opening the file it would likely solve the problem. I've looked all through the properties and through the Settings property on the class and can't find anything. I've done a bunch of Google searching and can't find anything that addresses this issue.Anyone know if that warning can be suppressed when using automation with Visio? Can I do it if I switch to Visio 2007?

i get a warning " 'functionDealWithHiddenFields' doesn't return a value on all code paths. A null reference exception could occur at run time when the result is used."
Example function:
vb.net
Function functionDealWithHiddenFields(ByVal HTML As String, ByVal numHiddenFields As Integer, ByVal X As Integer)
Try
[code]....
The functions still work correctly (as far as i can tell) what would i need to do to the above function to remedy that warning?

Couldn't think of a better title.(Background on the problem/me)Okay, so, first question/post here, so hi. Now that that's done with, the information pertinent to my problem. I'm fairly new to VB (and programming as well, aside from screwing around with C++ and learning assembler(well, attempting is the better word) god knows how many years ago), and have only seriously been programming for about under half a year, and my skill level is about at that stage. Only been using VB.Net, nothing older. Depending on the time of day and if I'm home or at school, I fluxuate between VB express and Vis Studio 08. Umm, this program I'm having trouble with was on a test that I took yesterday (took the problem home with me cause I really wanted to figure out what was wrong with it).
The stipulations of the test were:
No For->Each Loops
No using Built-In Sorting or Searching Functions

I include 2 exes in my setup project which share dlls. In 2008 this just resulted in warnings when building but I now get an error instead indicating that the file is already included.I can fix this by excluding them but they will reappear after each build so have to be excluded again which slows the process down - example error message is below:
Error 14 Two or more objects have the same target location ('[targetdir]interop.excel.dll') C:DevelopmentPIMSPIMSSetupPIMSSetup.vdproj PIMSSetup

I have a folder save here: C:MyFiles/And in that folder I have a few .txt files.I am looking to see what would be the best way to open each .txt file in that folder and search for the value Error or Warning and then when it does it must tell me what files do contain those words.What would be my best option? To create a Stored Procedure with t-sql to do this? or To create a .exe with C# or VB.net code.

I realize this post is rather long, but I wanted to give all the information up front instead of people having to ask me for more information.At the end of the re-installation of Visual Studio 2008, there is this message:
"Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard. MSI returned error code 1638" in the log file dd_error_vs_procore_90.txt.
I have searched on Google for this whole message and found some references to this error, but I have done what they said worked for them and it did not fix the problem for me.When I searched for just "MSI returned error code 1638", I got that it cannot install something because it is already installed:"Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel".In Add/Remove Programs I see these two programs:
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.3
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.4
Are these programs/versions what the error is refering to? Am I safe to remove them and depend on the similarly-named item which would be newly installed with Visual Studio 2008 - "Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard"? I still use SQL Server 2000 and 2005 on my computer, as well as 2008. I had installed VS 2008 on my computer before without this problem and also have VS 2005 and 2010.

Is there any way to disable a specific warning. For example, in one of my classes are re-implement System.ICloneable.Clone. After doing so I now get a warning that states, "'System.ICloneable.Clone' from 'implements System.ICloneable' is already implemented by the base class 'XXX'. Re-implementation of function assumed." Is there any way to remove this warning from the Error List

I'm compiling a VB.Net 2.0 app (created in VS2008) using msbuild, and now I've added a generic return type, it's giving me the following:
Warning: Type library exporter
encountered a generic type instance in
a signature. Generic code may not be
exported to COM.
Having just spent ages removing all of the previous warnings, I don't really want to add a new one. Any idea how to get rid of it (aside from not using generics)?I don't know what details I'd put in the attribute, or what number to put in the project-level ignore list.

I have an app with a timer control, and the interval is set to 60000ms (1 min). so every min i have some event happen. thats pretty simple. however, i want to have a 15 second warning that the event is going to happen. so basically 45 seconds after my timer starts, i want a message such as "15 seconds left until event x happens".
would i have to use 2 timers? i guess im lost on the logic. i know how to use the timer control, but i have been googling all night trying to figure this one out. i have tried using 1 timer set to 45 seconds (for the warning) and another timer at 60 seconds(for the event) but they go out of synch after 1 iteration and will not consistently stay 15 seconds ahead of the other. i dont want to post any code i have, because it is all trash and i want to start over from scratch.

I found that there is a folder in the project bin folder. The folder was called zh-chs. I have changed the name from roject1.resources.dll to testdll.dll and moved to the bin folder. I have added reference in my project and I have deleted the zh-chs folder. Suddenly, I have found a warning sage.

warnings got me thinking about old issues that always goofed me up when I was writing more VB.NET code.One of them was the fact that the compiler didn't warn if you declared a Function but never did an explicit Return statement or assign to the Function name. Running Visual Studio 2008, I just made a small experimental project, and it seems as though the behavior has never been fixed.I created a Visual Basic Console application, with the following code:
Module MainModule
Sub Main()
Dim test As Boolean = TestWarning()[code].....
I also went into the Project Settings and turned On Option Strict and Option Explicit.I also set the Warning Configurations so that "Function/Operator with no return value" was set to Error.I compiled the project and got no warning, and no error on the TestWarning() Function. This seems like a great place to put a warning, because it will default to False, and you may have simply forgotten to do a return. C# will error without a return statement. I thought that VB.NET did the same thing with the "Function/Operator with no return value" configuration. Is this a bug, or is there something I'm missing?
Edit: Further Experimentation
Function TestWarning() As Boolean
If DateTime.Now.DayOfWeek = DayOfWeek.Monday Then
Return False[code].....
If, and nothing in the Else, there is also no Warning/Error. It will simply take the default, even though you likely intended (via programming style) to have an explicit return. In this case, I explicitly returned False (which is the default for Boolean), so it's likely a hidden bug that I should have returned True in the Else.

I wrote a small VB6 program to monitor the status of a Shared Network Drive. In this case it's an external hard drive. The drive is used for backup. The program is invoked automatically when the computer is booted and runs minimized.
If the backup drive is not turned on or otherwise not functional then the program changes from minimized to a normal window and displays various statistics and a warning that the backup drive isn't working.
I want to make the warning much more prominent, like minimizing the program that happens to be running or displaying the warning window in front of the progrmam that happens to be running. I want something really noticaeble. The computers don't have speakers so I can't play an warning.wav .

Not a query, just mentioning a problem that might affect others, assuming it is not just some wierd bug on my system, that is. Perhaps someone can check this out.Under screen resolution, Windows 7 has a "make text larger option". On my machine at least, this has the effect of increasing the sizes/positions of any controls set in design mode. Not just in executable, it actually changes the values in design mode.
If you are relying on rescaling sizes/position set in design mode according to screen resolution only you may get incorrect positions when this mode is in use.This affects both VB.net and VB6.
