.net - Create A Function "ExecuteSql" Without Consume Too Much Memory?
Oct 24, 2011
i wrote a .NET function :
Public Function ExecuteSql(strSql As String, connectionString As String) As SqlDataReader
Dim conn As New SqlConnection(connectionString)
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand(strSql, conn)
Dim dr As SqlDataReader
[code]....
As you can see, this function return a datareader, so i can manipulate data as i like. The problem is: the connection remain open.Is there a command to 'close globally connection' ?
I am getting a System.OutOfMemoryException from my vb.net application, it happened from one certain user. I am trying to figure out whether my application takes too much memory space or the PC has low memory. But she just upgraded her desktop as i3 Intel CPU and higher memory.
Assume I have a large dataset and I want to run a "like" function in the dataset eg column - NameIs there any way to run a like statement in a dataset.

I wanted to know if u define a dimension in a function or subroutine and that func/sub is called say 5 times, does the memory new block of memory get assigned to it every time the func/sub is run or does it use the one it got assigned the first time?
I don't use VB.Net very much, still mostly do VB6, but I am doing this project in .Net. I have a huge string of data, 168 Mb that I stream in from a file to a string variable. Then I have to perform a number of replacements on it before using the data to compile statistics. Because of the nature of the data, I can't break this up into smaller strings.
The problem is that I get a system out of memory error after a few replacements.
I've used both Replace(x,y,z) and X.Replace(y,z). The second one gets a little farther in the code before it crashes, but they both crash.
When I run it in the IDE, the IDE is using about 130 Mb of RAM, the Exe of the app is running about 350 Mb, and one svchost.exe runs about 300 Mb
Other than that there are no major RAM uses going on. The PC has an i7 980x cpu with 12 GB of RAM.
I have this relatively short function, triggered when the mouse is moved over a picturebox. When being called, it slowly increases the RAM and PF usage of the program which never recovers.[code]I just wanted to report back and say that I did solve this issue (more or less).I added a manual garbage collection call at the end of the loop and it kept the resources usage under control. It did seem to slightly slow the response time, but it's worth it to avoid the program hogging multiple GBs of RAM.
I have that code running into a windows service and the service seem to have a memory leak, something is wrong for sure. After looking at the whole code, I think it might be inside one of these function but I cannot seem to find where it could be.
I found this function for plotting a graph online somewhere. I am pretty sure it has a memory leak but cant figure most of the functions as I am new to VB and windows API. Looking for some quick tip on what I should be looking at.
I have a VB Function (in Visual Studio 2008 with .NET 3.5) that opens up a connection to an Oracle database and queries the database for information. Apparently after some trial and error, I discovered when the SQL statement is being processed and filling the dataset, it apparently is taking up too much memory trying to complete the task. I'm running into System.OutofMemory exceptions and other unpleasantness.I'm wondering, is there some sort of program out there to measure memory consumption of your SQL code that is being processed in a Visual Studio application?

I have a function which return the Dataset and my question is that, is dataset memory release automatic when function work finished if not please suggest me how i release memory in below sample question?
public function givemedataset() dim keepme as new dataset 'grabbing record into dataset return keepme end function
Private Sub forumbrowsebtn_Click dim getme as dataset=givemedataset end sub
I am a noob to Visual Basic and I am currently learning it at my college. I have a final project to do and I am having some trouble deciding on how to attack it. First off, I have done a lot of research and I cannot find my answer, so I am using this(post) as a last resort. The book my prof is having me use is outdated, its coding on vb6, and we are using vb2010...hence my problem. I am not looking for an answer in code, but more to be pointed in the right direction, or maybe some classes that I do not know about.[code]...
Inspired from this question, was wondering what are the possible ways to create a memory leak in .Net. I once found one with ODBC Data Access. Has anyone had any experiences with latest version?
I'm trying to convert a visual to a Ximage(to print on pdf). Currently I'm using this:
Dim img As XImage = XImage.FromFile(path.LocalPath)
But it requires me to save it on the harddrive I would like to use this but I don't know how to create a image from a visual(in memory) and load it in.
Dim img As XImage = XImage.FromGdiPlusImage(myVisualAsImage)
Does a variable create a memory cell, or is it actually the memory cell, for example: Dim Answer As DialogResult
This is the explanation I have written for that line of "This line of code uses a Dim (Dimension) statement to declare a variable called Answer.
This variable creates an object to store the users answer to a dialog result." and this is the explanation that my friend said it was:
"This line of code uses a Dim (Dimension) statement to declare a variable called DialogResult. This variable is a memory cell to store the users answer to the dialog result."
I'm pushing the bounds of what one should ask of others with this one, but I'm totally stuck, so here goes. This is my first web service. Not only that, it's my companies first web service - nobody I work with has ever written or consumed anything like this one. I know these things are not complicated, but for a first kick at the can, this is killing me because the API is so large.
Probably a very dumb question but I have a program whereby I create and populate an in memory datatable, which I then add to a data-set. I then run a couple of updates on the dataset and need to know how to then send these updates down into the in memory datatable :Here is a mock up of the code structure following the creation and population of the table :
I have searched other forums, google, etc. and have not find a solution. I am creating a VB.NET application using Visual Studio 2010. My application runs fine inside the IDE. Outside of the IDE, it crashes immediately with an OOM exception. I have compiled the program in both VS 2010 and VS2008. The outcome is always the same. I increased my Desktop heap to 12288 meg from 3072 meg thinking that was the issue, but the outcome is the case. Although the increase does improve my response in the IDE. The error is also being reported as related to mscorlib.dll; and my version is for 2.0 framework is 2.0.50727 and for 4.0 framework is 4.0.30319. I am running Windows XP/SP3.
I need to write a Windows forms app in VB 2008 to communicate with a Web Service.I have searched MSDN and many other sites trying to find a good tutorial or example code with no luck. The one really good piece of code I found did not compile. It needed to import Microsoft.UDDI.I found numerous references to the UDDI SDK, but could not find any site where I could successfully download it.I have the UDDI.dll but it is in my VB 8 folder and would not register. There is no such ddl in my VB 9 folder.
i would like to ask if how can my vb.net app client consumes dynamic web service (URL). sometimes my webservice changes its IP thus my vb.net client can't connect to the webservice during compilation of my code. in vb6... i can simply do some dynamic change in my webservice using SOAP
I wanna to load a web page and login.I know how to do this with a web browser control but:I wanna to create the control runtime and in the memory and not showing anything in the form.I wanna to load many pages in the memory and extract my information needed without anything to see by user.
I am working on a user control. Embedded in my user control is another user control. All of a sudden while programming some simple stuff I get an "out of memory error message". I can no longer load my project (after reboots etc.). I start a new project, copy the control.vb files into a new project folder.. add then add the control to the new project. Ican view the design and the code of the control. When I attempt to drag the control onto another control in the same project I get an error message "Failed to create component... 'system.outofmemoryexception. Out of memory".
From a .NET application, how do I consume a Web Service developed using gSoap c/C++ library? I can create a C/C++ client using gSoap library to consume the web service. But I need to consume it from within a .NET (C#) application. I tried Adding a Web Reference but that doesn't seem to work. Would I need to work with raw Soap Packets?
We are in the process of creating a new WCF web service (WCF service that has an basicHttpBinding Endpoint) to carry out some of our business logic. The web application connects not problem at all, however our legacy Compact framework application doesn't seem to see the service at all. Are we on to a loser here and should we just revert to ASMX web service (the Compact framework cannot be upgraded) or is there a way around this?
