I am working with SQL and Vb.net. When I run the following function (shown below) an error is highlighted "Error converting varchar to numeric". Whats wrong with the coding that triggers the error..

Dim cmd As New SqlCommand
Dim irow As Integer

I have a WPF application that uses a SQL2008 database. I have a copy of the database on a laptop and on my home machine. My application is versioned using SVN and I am obviously able go from the work laptop to the home machine and update/commit as required to ensure I am using the latest code for the application.However the database is a different story in that any change I make I create a backup and then transfer the backup to the other machine etc. This way I get the data and the changes made on each system. In order to do this the database connection using a different connectionstring and I change a setting in my app to use a different connection based on my location.
I have now started to use LINQ to SQL and DBML files in my application, and finally getting to the question, I don't know how I can change the connectionstring it uses in code so it will use the correct database in the DBML.Also, is there a better way to transfer the database so I don't need to do the backups and restores? The only reason why I have not versioned the Schema is because I am not sure how that would handle my data as this is key to my development, ie various environment settings etc are stored in the DB and brought through at runtime.
In newer editions of .Net I can pass -1 for the output size for VarChar(Max) columns, but in Visual Studio 2003 I get the following System.ArgumentException: Invalid parameter Size value '-1'. The value must be greater than or equal to 0. What should I specify as the size for a VarChar(Max) column in Visual Studio 2003?
View 1 RepliesI'm still using ye ancient 32-bit machine with ye olde XP.Currently I'm writing some code to add binary content to files, and I need to know, if the same code can be applied on 64-bit systems.For example an integer variable added to a binary file with:
BinaryStream.Write(SomeNumberDeclaredAsInteger)
can be safely loaded with
MyInteger = BinaryStream.ReadInt32
on my system, but is this also the case on 64-bit systems or should I truncate it to Int32 before writing it to file?
I face a problem that if i make a datattype in sql server of Integer and then use it in linq to sql query it give error of "specific cast not valid" and when i change datatype into varchar the linq to sql query work fine one more thing how to use linq to sql query to make crystal report?
View 2 RepliesI have this code that use to sort a datatable.
Dim sortingIndex As Integer = orderby
Dim DataTableNew As DataTable = New DataTable
DataTableNew = dt.Clone
Dim query = (From c In dt.AsEnumerable Order By c.Field(Of String)(sortingIndex) Ascending)
query.CopyToDataTable(DataTableNew, LoadOption.OverwriteChanges)
My problem is that with this method I always need (Of String) for it to work, so the date columns are also managed as Strings witch is the problem. Is there a way to use the correct type so the sorting is based on the type of the column?
anything wrong with using datatype object and determine datatype in class property? I have a typed dataset and it has several integers columns that are null in the db. and when I make a call it throws exception.is there anythign wrong with setting it as object in my dataset.. changing the throw exception property to Nothing and passing it to my property as integer?
for each row in myDS.DataTable
cRate.CustID = row.CustID

and in my class

I'm using a 3rd party chart COM object (National Instruments CW graph) to plot data versus elapsed time.The x value needs to be a VB6 equivalent Date type which is a .NET DateTime datatype.What I need is a way to convert a TimeSpan datatype to a DateTime datatype.
Dim testTime as System.DateTime 'date
Dim plotTime as System.DateTime 'date
Dim elapsedTime as System.TimeSpan[code].....
I have a database in mysql. The column in table is of datatype time(0)
Similarly I have a control datetimepicker in vb.net I have assigned format property as custom to the control and the CustomFormat property as HH:mm:ss tt so that it can just provide the time. I dont want the date to be in it.
Issue comes when I try to retrieve the value from database I get an error as Converion of type 'Timespan' to type 'Date' is not valid
Try
Dim myCommand As SqlCommand
myCommand = New SqlCommand("select * from [HMS].[dbo].[DoctorSchedule] where DoctorID='" & txtDoctorID.Text & "'", Connection)

I am working on a produce inventory database in my VB Express program.I have a form on the bottom and a spreadsheet at the top. I want to enter all the data in the form and have that data automatically transferred as a group to the spreadshet in the upper part of the page when I press a button.I know that there's an insert function.I set it up correctly. The problem is that I have to convert the textbox, which contain string data, to the datatype used in the database spreadsheet.HOw do I use CAST or do this?Here's the function I am using:
Me.TableAdapterManager.InventoryTableAdapter.Insert(IDTextBox.Text, fruitName, unitprice, unitsize, unitIn, unitTransit, unitOut)
Evernything is a string cause the data is coming from a textbox, I need to convert it to the datatypes used in the database.Also how do I use the CAST and Convert functions
i'm worried about doing this since my changes will be overwritten when the dbml file is auto generated again (as they often are).i'm thinking of doing a partial class and writing out the same properties to annotate them, but worried that it will complain about duplicates, and the reason i can't even experiment brings me to the second part of my questions...
that, the expandable arrow on my dbml file listing is missing, right clicking and selecting "View Code" just displays an empty partial class as below.

when i double click my dbml file at the solution explorer, I get this error: the operation could not be completed. unspecified error I'm working on a VB.Net project, using visual studio 2008, mssql 2008.
View 7 RepliesI have a class that add extra information about a column for linq2sql (see code below) right now, I have to explicitly tell what column I want that info on, how would you put that code with a loop on every column in every table from a dbml file? I was doing my test on a very very small DB, now I have to implement it on a much more bigger database and I really don't want to do it manually for every tables/columns it will take hours.
how it's being used:
Partial Class Contact ''contact is a table inside a dbml file.
Private _ContactIDColumn As ExtraColumnInfo
Private _ContactNameColumn As ExtraColumnInfo
Private _ContactEmailColumn As ExtraColumnInfo

I have an ASP.Net form, where it grabs a value from a textbox:
[Code]...
Now all went well about from using the structure correctly. The working of the structure was perfect. How ever i missed Two important issues. The structure needed a fixed size of 10 items (9 in programming terms starting from 0) And also out of the 5 items allowed to be chosen as one of the member types for the structure a limit of 5 items of that particular type.

How can i increment varchar in vb.net 2010?.

I have a textbox where I can enter a number. If the number exists in my sql database then it would change the label accordingly. It seems to work with any input number except for numbers starting with zero. If I input a number starting with zero(012345678) I get the error: Arithmetic Overflow error converting varchar to data type numeric.

I got the dates stored as varchar(100). I need to get them sorted when I use these records but I can't now because they are not stored as datetime. Is there any other way to sort dates or if somebody know would I loose my data if I would try to convert the column from varchar(100) to datetime now as it holds my dates or maybe it would convert ok?
