Retrieve Application Path For Associated File Type From Registry For Use With Shell Command?
Jun 17, 2009
I'm using VB.NET in Visual Studio 2008 in a Vista 64-bit OS. I'm trying to find an easy way (there must be one) to quickly retrieve from the registry the application file name and path to use in a Shell command to open a particular file. Specifically, I want the user in my app to be able to click on a PDF file and have the app open that PDF file using the application associated with PDF file types - Acrobat Reader, for example. Anyone have any suggestions as to proper coding & syntax for the following sequence?:
(1) Get name of .exe file associated with .pdf file type (most likely from the HKey Root Classes hive)
(2) Get path for the .exe file
(3) Shell("[pathname]appname.exe filename.pdf")
I've spent a couple of hours looking through the forums and haven't found what I'm looking for.

We have installed on our vista system winzip: WinZip Command Line Support Add-On Version 2.2.We are using vb2008 and want to run wzzip.exe from the shell function. "C:Program FilesWinZipWZZIP.EXE" -m d:my.zip d:info*.*
For a few files it's working great but when the d:info has a great number of files, only the wzzip dos screen is visible and the program don't goes further. Does someone has experience with this problem and has a solution?

I know the "Process.Start" function, but it creates a new object of the cmd shell which terminates itself when the Python script is at its end. How can i open the original Windows Command Shell so that the Python file can run to its end without the box getting closed?

I'm working on an application, a GUI front-end for a command-line program. What I need to do is this:-use the OpenFileDialog to retrieve the command-line program's path (as it may be in different places for different users)-save that path string in a variable that I can use later (save "C: arget" in a variable called mainPath)

I need to open a *.py file in the shell (DOS) box, but it returns an error that no file was found at the specified path. But this path is completely correct. Unless Visual Basic are referencing to paths in another matter than C#? 'Cause I am developing in C# and referenced to VB to do this.

I know how to get a list of files in a local Windows machine's specific directory:
Dim dirInfo As DirectoryInfo = New DirectoryInfo("C:Temp")
Dim fileListing() As FileInfo = dirInfo.GetFiles()
But how do I use this class for a mainframe system where user ID, password and 'change directory' command are needed?
When I attempt to just access the server without credentials and just do the Windows version and use the syntax "\server_nameAUTO:RPTS.", where 'AUTO:RPTS.' is the mainframe directory name I get the following error: "The given path's format is not supported."
When I just use '\server_name' I get: "The UNC path should be of the form \servershare."

Is there a way to use vb .net code to retrieve the path name for a file or database? And then use that path name for the connection of a database, so that way when I put my application on a different computer it will be able to still have access to the database.I'm using Visual Basic .net 2008 express.

I suppose technically this isn't .NET specific but I suspect this is something to do with the registry and I'm using .NET!I'm trying to find out how to get the fully qualified path relating to a file type. For example, the system knows that to open a PDF file it needs to launch C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe Reader 10.0Readeracrord32.exe
I've had a good long search through the registry and found a lot of references to the adobe path probably too many - and I've edited them to try and "break" the process so I can identify which one is used to discover the path but with no luck. I'm assuming this has something to do with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT?

Does My.Computer.Network.DownloadFile work with FTP? When I attempt to use it, I get the exception: "The remote server returned an error: (500) Syntax error, command unrecognized."
Here's the code I'm using:
Dim UpdateAddress As String = "ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" & lbDownload.Items(X).ToString
My.Computer.Network.DownloadFile(UpdateAddress, BasicPath & lbDownload.Items(X).ToString, "", "", True, 10000, False, FileIO.UICancelOption.ThrowException)
The FTP server is IIS6.

I have a VB.net program in which I call the Shell function. I would like to get the text output that is produced from this code in a file. However, this is not the return value of the executed code so I don't really know how to.
This program is a service but has access to the disk no problem as I already log other information. The whole service have multiple thread so I must also make sure that when the file is written it's not already accessed.

I'm trying to read in a file. I'm not even sure what kind of data the file contains. Is it binary, unicode, etc? Or maybe it is encryted? I doubt it is encrypted, but I really have no clue. I am pretty sure it contains geometric/drawing data. It shows most characters as boxes.I've attached a picture of the contents when I open it in wordpad. Does anyone have a clue what type this is? and how to get it into a readable format using vb.net?

I'm trying to run batch files code within Visual Basic. I've been told you can do this using the Shell command, however I'm running into trouble with double quotes. As the Shell command syntax is Shell("codecodecode"), I'm not sure what to do when the batch file already contains quotes.
For example, how would I use the code:
copy "file location" "destination"

I am trying to execute a shell command with vb.net that includes variable from the vb.net code.I have experience with batch, and Unix scripting. I had to modify the contents of the code as it is confidential to me at the moment.Example of my problem:
Dim Variable1 As String = "Location_to_.exe"
Dim Location As String = "UNC_Path_Goes_Here"
Dim Options As String = "/Options go here"
Shell("cmd.exe", /C Variable1, Location, Options) This is something that must be run from CMD.exe and I am trying to do it this way to make it as dynamic as possible.

I am trying to setup a variable in VB, which will execute a shell command (autostatus.exe) with a parameter (-j JobName), and later display the output of the said variable. The code thus far is...
Dim JobName
Dim JobStatus
JobName = "asysr11_set_global_var_2day"
JobStatus = ShellExecute("autostatus.exe", -j, JobName)
What is the easiest way to achieve this? Currently, the above code returns error message "line:4, Type mismatch: 'ShellExecute', code: 800A000D"
