Is there a way to use vb .net code to retrieve the path name for a file or database?And then use that path name for the connection of a database, so that way when I put my application on a different computer it will be able to still have access to the database.I'm using Visual Basic .net 2008 express.

I'm using VB.NET in Visual Studio 2008 in a Vista 64-bit OS. I'm trying to find an easy way (there must be one) to quickly retrieve from the registry the application file name and path to use in a Shell command to open a particular file. Specifically, I want the user in my app to be able to click on a PDF file and have the app open that PDF file using the application associated with PDF file types - Acrobat Reader, for example. Anyone have any suggestions as to proper coding & syntax for the following sequence?:
(1) Get name of .exe file associated with .pdf file type (most likely from the HKey Root Classes hive)
(2) Get path for the .exe file
(3) Shell("[pathname]appname.exe filename.pdf")

I have a project that is like a server and a terminal interface. the server is the one that can only make changes in the database and the terminal is more of storing what is in the database. here is the problem, i have stored a PDF file path in the database through the use of the server, but the problem is that i cant seem to display it on the terminal. i was thinking that the terminal was assuming that the file path was stored in its local hard drive. can u please help on how will i specify that the file path is on the local hard disk of the server and not on its local hard disk?

I have only recently discovered the world of fetching online data using XML functions in VB.NET and it has been working well so far. Like for example: You choose a saving location and filename in the SaveFileDialog, and then when you press save the path and filename will be put in to a string as such: C:Folderfilename.txt

I have a report made in Crystal Reports XI. The report is generated and exported to PDF in visual basic script using COM interface. Generally everything is running smoothly, but in one case generation breaks with error: Failed to retrieve data from the database. Details: [Database Vendor Code 9421]
Database used is MSSQL 2005 connected over ODBC to CR XI. When I am opening report with exactly the same parameters in Designer, everything works fine.It looks like it is data related, but it is hard to trace since the whole report is pretty sophisticated. I am using microsoft access 2003 and visualbasic.net. I am trying desperately to add a database using the wizard, and it lets me go through with it, testing the connection is good, but when I try to finish it gives me an error: "<customers>Could not retrieve schema information for table or view customers." What am I doing wrong? I've added databases in the past without this problem using the same Access.
