I wrote a test program in VB2008 that saved the first 16 digits of Pi (without the decimal point) to both a text file and a random access file, just to be sure it was outputting the numbers properly. For reference the first 16 digits of Pi are:

i have a comma delimitted text file that i need to add three fields and update the contents of those three fields and then save the text file.
right now i bring the file into ms access and alter the table to add the fields and then update them but i don't know how to export the access table back into a comma delimitted text file.
I am working on a project for work where I am stuck. We have a daily checklist that i have converted into a Tabular text file. In the text file I have 3 pieces of information, DB field reference, Time it should be done by, and task to be completed. I have this part being pulled into the screen with the Code below. My problem is how do I Merge the Database to the TextBox. The Access DB has 50 Columns of for data Labeled 1 through 50 + one date Field

I'd like to open a text file and not allow any other processes to write to it. I understand I can do this with the following FileStream:Dim fs As New FileStream(_FilePath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.ReadWrite, FileShare.Read)
Once I have access like this I need to read all of the lines (I will use a StreamReader(fs)) and then I will need to write to the file (I will use a StreamWriter(fs)).
The problem here is that the StreamWriter won't allow me to set the append mode to false (so I can overwrite all text in the file) when I use the filestream as a parameter instead of the file path. So all text written with the StreamWriter is appended onto the text which I don't want. If I use a StreamWriter with the file path (which will let me set append to false) as the parameter instead of the filestream it will be locked out because of the FileStream FileShare. How can I still have exclusive access to read and write to the file but still be able to overwrite the existing text (append mode false)?
I noticed that my application is running a bit slow. This is a Windows Service built using VB2010 with SQL Server as a back end. Its main function is to poll a folder looking for a text file. If found it reads the text file and imports the data into SQL Server.
While the slowness could be caused by a number of reasons, I am looking at my code to determine if it could be more efficient. Below I've pasted snippets of code where I initialize the DB connection and execute SQL statements. I've also included a snippet that illustrates how I am processing the text file.
I'd appreciate if the group could have a look at these and let me know if the method that I am using is the most efficient possible. At this time I am also focusing on other probable issues, but I can't rule out the possibility that the code that is in place might be a contributing factor.

I am trying to import a text file to an access database in VB2008 express. The text file I am testing with is a csv file with 34,000 records. The problem is this takes 2 minutes to read through all this and write it to the database. The actual text file I will be using in production has over 800,000 records and this will take a ridiculous amount of time. I think I am doing something wrong. I have posted my code below. I am reading a record, parsing out the fields to an array, then creating an SQL statement to insert the record and executing it.
reader = New IO.StreamReader(fname)
Do While reader.Peek() >= 0
linesread = linesread + 1

I'm using Visual Basic Express 2008 (VB.NEt). I've created a project which
connect to a Microsoft Access Database (OLEDB) & displays the records using textboxes in the windows app.
I need to add a button which exports the database to a fixed length text file. Does anyone know the code I would use to do this?
I'm using the following code to import data from a text file into an existing Access table:
Code:
Imports System.Data.OleDb
Public Class Carrega_CSV
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

The first time i ran the code, it caused no error but no records where loaded into the table. The second time it causes the OleDbException "Table 'TEMP' already exists." The text file is comma delimited and it has exactly the same number of columns of the TEMP table.
I am just trying figure out a record import program from text file into access database using Microsoft.Jet.Oledb Provider 4.0 and Vb.net. And it seems easy but my problem is different. In the text file, records are not delimited.
Format of the text file:
Field Name & Size
Date[Date,ShortDate]FirstName[20]LastName[20]Sex[1]Age[2]

Can I put delimiter programmatically while reading the text file using stream reader and later simply import the whole file in DB.
I am trying to import tab delimited text file to access table. The below code WORKS very well for csv file. when I try the same for tab delimited text it it importing all the fields into one column of the access table and combining the header files as one column.

Actually my text file is a dump file and i need to make a program to process this dump file. I may ask some stupid questions but this is just a beginning, i want to parse INDIVIDUAL text file line by line. In the above code i have used the ReadToEnd function in order to display it in TextBox but i may use ReadLine Function or Read function to read line by line or characters respectively.
I have attached an Access Database with the predefined tables in it, I want to update the contents in Access Database. Supposingly if my textfile contains Names (Sam,Julie,Joseph,Marina), how will i update my attached Access table in vertical order !
I am a school student and having a project on importing text to access database. The problem seems easy but the issue is the text file i am trying to import has no delimiter. .

Now how can I split the text and import it to an access database.
I have a large text file that I want to use in my project, that data in the text file has about six items for each location. Now I had thought of importing the text file into a database using Access, but not had a lot of luck making it work. The question is is it better to load the data in the project as a text file then search for the string required or to convert it into a database. (The text file is a list of airports and related data.) Can a text file be converted to a Microsoft compact SQL database?

how to proceed. One of our customers is going to be sending me a flat file (ASCII-Text) that I have to break down and scan. Every line ends in a CrLf - So I know I can use StreamReader and ReadLine(). I did get it to work on one of the test files they sent.(A very Short file) However, the file is not delimited at all and every field is padded to the full length they specified. Here's the format of the file:

I've been doing some more experiments and have summarized the query as below: I've created the simplest application. A project with a plain form, which writes text file within its application directory. Simple as that.Supposing this was my application which I want to distribute on the world web. I've created a basic installer for this using NSIS installer. The Installer installs my application in a folder created inside Program Files. The OS is Windows7 and UAC is enabled.Now I know many people have been facing difficulties in accessing files inside the Program Files folder. My app is simply creating a plain text file, nothing more, and within its own application directory. It is giving Access Denied error. But if I right-click on the EXE and run it as Administrator, then it works ok.The only solution thats available is not to write in the application folder, and write text file in some other folder which is not protected. My question is that other programs that are installed on my system are also doing it. I have a temperature monitoring software called SpeedFan on my system, it creates log files within its app directory. All other softwares create log files within their app directories, why cant I?I just have to make a small log file for my application and Win7+UAC is not letting me do it. I don't want to write the small file in any other folder. How are the other softwares accomplishing this ?

When you need to do random access to the lines of a text file, the regular solution is to put those lines in a list and access them in that list.But doing this if the text file is large creates a large memory overhead and may cause some memory stress on the application.This class maps the file and provide the ability to read any particular line in the file at a random position, without the need to read or put in memory any other line but the desired line. The only memory overhead involve is the 1024 bytes buffer of the base stream.Even if the file mapping can be a process that consume a noticable amount of time if the file is very large ( ~ 5 seconds for each 100,000,000 caracteres) , once the mapping is done the access to a particular line becomes instantaneous regardless of the size of the file. (The file mapping can always be done at a convenient time (ex when the process load) and can be done on a worker thread The class is base on a StreamReader to support the differents Text Encodings Example uf usage ( As I say, if the file is very large, dont do it like that, but declare the class at a convenient time)
Imports Reader = System.IO.MyStreams
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

I have the following basic code to read a text file from a StreamReader:
Using sr As New StreamReader(FileData)
Dim line As String = String.Empty
Do
'Error occurs on the next line after looping
'past the *last* line in the file...sometimes
line = sr.ReadLine()
'Some code here to parse and process the line
Loop Until (line Is Nothing) OrElse (line = String.Empty)
End Using
I tried changing the Do Loop to Do While Not sr.EndOfStream I tried checking If sr.ReadLine IsNot Nothing and a few other things but I keep getting the Cannot access a disposed object. Object name: 'SslStream' error after all 105 lines have successfully been read and processed. This code has been working for a couple of years, but there seems to be some issue with certain files (recently) that is causing this problem.
I opened the file and I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. No extra blank lines, funny characters or anything of the like. Just a normal file with 105 properly formatted lines. So even know there is something about this file causing the error, I need to obviosly handle this programatically.
What can I do to prevent the sr.ReadLine() line of code from throwing that exception that I have not yet tried?UPDATE Upon reading the last line of the file, the 'EndOfStream' property on the StreamReader goes immdeatly to: EndOfStream: {"Cannot access a disposed object.Object name: 'SslStream'."} It never toggles to 'True'. This makes checking for this condition problematic.
I think I have figured out why this issue only occurs sometimes: if I add in a blank line to the file at the end, none of this ever occurs. It is only when the last line of the file contains data. Still, I should be able to handle this programatically. Telling the vendor supplying the file to always add a blank line at the end should not be the solution.
