VS 2008 Add A Custom User Control To A Form Or Project
Mar 19, 2009I'm coming over from VB6 in which you could use 'user controls' to create reusuable custom controls. They were simple and contained and you can easily create several instances of a user control within the same or other apps. In vb2008 there are user controls but I can not figure out how to add them to forms or or other apps. Can someone please give me the the basic steps to add a custom user control to a form or project.

Importing User Control Into New Project
Jun 12, 2011I'm having a problem importing a user control into a new project.I've created and tested a user control using the guide at url...If I choose Debug>Build, a .dll file is created in the release folder.According to what I've read, I should be able to open the toolbox in my new project, right click>choose items, browse to the dll and then import. This all works, but the control is 'greyed out' in the toolbox, so I can't drag and drop it onto the userform in my new project.I also tried importing by 'Add Reference' in the solution explorer and got an error about using a later version of the .NET framework, so I've set both the user control and new project to compile with the .NET 3.5 framework.

Nov 23, 2011Yesterday I added a new user control to a project I was working on: right click on the project name "Estimator", then add, then new item, then on the add new item dialog I typed the name of the user control, and I created my ButtonWithCheck.vb control.
My user control appeared on the toolbox, I inserted it in a form, used it, kept working on my project, and everything was fine. I saved and closed the solution.
Today I open the solution and I got an error: "Could not find type 'Estimator.ButtonWithCheck'. Please make sure..."

The idea is that it will only accept numbers as user input.I have added the controls and code in the textboxes keypress event.Built and added the control to the VS toolbox. User Control Accessing A Form Within The Project?
May 1, 2010I have a "windows form" user control--that is, not on a web page etc. This user control has a form within the user control project. However, code from within the user control can't 'see' the form even though it is a public class---I don't understand why this is the case.
So how can I access the controls (a couple of radio buttons) on the form from code within the user control? I tried creating public properties on the form to return the state of the radiobuttons, but this still doesn't work. I get a "Reference to a non-shared member requires an object reference." error
Should I not be able to see the form since it is a public class?
Building A 2008 Express Project Referencing A Dll
Jun 5, 2009I have written a program in VB.NET 2008 Express that references a .NET managed dll. I simply added a reference to the dll to the project. I then 'Imports' the dll at the beginning of the program and then can use it. Everything works fine when I am running the program in debug mode (and it uses the dll as intended), but as soon as I go to build the project I get an errors that it "Could not reslove this reference" and "Namespace of type specifier in the Imports 'ModbusTCP' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found." The dll is located in a different location on my hard drive to the project location, but this was referenced when I 'added reference'.

May 2, 2010i have a project and i used NSIS to create a Setup file. I am able to install it to my system but some parts of the program do not work (and they work when i run my project in VB). For example i have a Back Up option that creates a back up but this does not work when i run the application via the installation file. Probably it has something to do with the directories?

In Visual Studio, I open the Database Explorer and I try to create a database connection.
The Add connection dialog box proposes to enter a database *file name* but I cannot select a database *server* and a database *name*.
Perhaps, is it a restriction because it is a free version ?
Within Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, I can select a database *server* and a database *name* !

May 31, 2010If someone has any knowledge on how the following works, please advise as to why I can sucessfully Load a user token, Set token privileges to load the profile, impersonate the logged on user, create the environment block, obtain the roaming profile path, and load the profile perfectly fine as long as the application calling the functions is running as an admin. The application runs as a service on the local machine. As soon as I try to run the exact same code under the SYSTEM account, LoadUserProfile returns error 5. What must I have to change in order to allow the SYSTEM account on the local machine to perform the same tasks?

Oct 6, 2011About 3 years ago i came across a vb project for a photo album, it was on online tutorial and I followed it and after some custom tweaking I found it was quite usefull. Unfortuatly the original sourcecode has long since vanished.The project was fairly easy to follow and I remember the author had a photo image of his sailing boat and a yellow labrador (just trying to jog some memories here) :).
Anyway; I have searched high and low for it but can not find it. I'm pretty sure it was on a msdn or some other microsoft forum and was to do with VB 2005 or VB 2008 edition of Visual studio.

Feb 24, 2012If I put this piece of code in a new fresh vb.net form, add a button and two labels and start debug I get execution time of about 11.5s.If I put the same piece of code in a new form in an old project upgraded from an earlier version of vb.net, start debug I get an execution time of 7.5s.So I do exactly the same in the two projects but get different execution times.
What do I have to do with the fresh new project to get the same execution time ?I am not interested in improving the code to be able to calculate primes faster. I just want to know what is the significant difference between an old upgraded project and a new fresh one. I am using windows 7 64bit on a 2,4 Ghz Intel quadcore.
