View 4 RepliesI have written a program in VB.NET 2008 Express that references a .NET managed dll. I simply added a reference to the dll to the project. I then 'Imports' the dll at the beginning of the program and then can use it. Everything works fine when I am running the program in debug mode (and it uses the dll as intended), but as soon as I go to build the project I get an errors that it "Could not reslove this reference" and "Namespace of type specifier in the Imports 'ModbusTCP' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found." The dll is located in a different location on my hard drive to the project location, but this was referenced when I 'added reference'.
View 2 Repliesi have a project and i used NSIS to create a Setup file. I am able to install it to my system but some parts of the program do not work (and they work when i run my project in VB). For example i have a Back Up option that creates a back up but this does not work when i run the application via the installation file. Probably it has something to do with the directories?
If System.IO.Directory.Exists(CurDirectory + "Backup Folder") = False Then
System.IO.Directory.CreateDirectory(CurDirectory + "Backup Folder")
End If
how can i make it work from the installation file? Do i need to copy something somewhere?
I have built a web browser using Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition, but I don't know how to open the .exe file back in Visual Basic so that I can improve it and fix some problems that are in it. Can someone tell me how I can edit the project in Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition?

View 3 RepliesI have been learning about working with databases and VB. I have coded the connection string for a MS Access database to my VB project but i cannot establish a connection with my sql mdf database.
The code i used to connect to MS Access is:
<Dim dt As New DataTable()/>
<Dim match As String = ""/>
< Dim connStr As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & _
[Code]....
What is the connection code in order to manipulate data from the mdf file. Is it similar to the above code.
I'm not sure if this is the right forum or not but...I've written my first VB.NET 2008 Express Class Library project (addin dll) and now I need to deploy it. I see Windows Form Applications have a Publsh tab (ClickOnce) in the project properties window but my class library project does not. How do I deploy a VB.NET 2008 Express Class Library project?
View 8 RepliesFor some reason, the Add New Item command on the Project Menu is hanging VB on my Vista based machine.but now, it hangs. By that I mean the the little circle cursor spins and spins and spins... This happens even when all I do is start VB, start and new project. and then try to add something, eg. another form, a class, anything except "existing item".
View 1 RepliesI would like to access to a SQL Server Database from my Visual Studio project.
I have SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed on my PC and I have a database with some tables.
In Visual Studio, I open the Database Explorer and I try to create a database connection.
The Add connection dialog box proposes to enter a database *file name* but I cannot select a database *server* and a database *name*.
Perhaps, is it a restriction because it is a free version ?
Within Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, I can select a database *server* and a database *name* !
How i can make an installation file from a VB project developed in VB express edition 2008?So i can give it to someone and they can install it on their system.
View 1 RepliesI'm, following the tutorial on creating your first program in Visual basic. I'm instructed to start a new project, and select windows form application. When I hit okay I get the following error:"Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Build.Engine, Version 3.5.0.0, culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified."
View 1 RepliesAbout 3 years ago i came across a vb project for a photo album, it was on online tutorial and I followed it and after some custom tweaking I found it was quite usefull. Unfortuatly the original sourcecode has long since vanished.The project was fairly easy to follow and I remember the author had a photo image of his sailing boat and a yellow labrador (just trying to jog some memories here) :).
Anyway; I have searched high and low for it but can not find it. I'm pretty sure it was on a msdn or some other microsoft forum and was to do with VB 2005 or VB 2008 edition of Visual studio.
VB 2005 Express Visual BasicI want to move (part of) projects to different projects/ computer.I used File - export template- and was able to save templates of whole project or item(s).They saved nicely in a subdirectory called "templates" as zip files.How do I import to 1/ other project on same pc?2/ To a different computer?I tried copy zip files into corresponding folder on new system. No luck.
View 5 RepliesIf I put this piece of code in a new fresh vb.net form, add a button and two labels and start debug I get execution time of about 11.5s.If I put the same piece of code in a new form in an old project upgraded from an earlier version of vb.net, start debug I get an execution time of 7.5s.So I do exactly the same in the two projects but get different execution times.
What do I have to do with the fresh new project to get the same execution time ?I am not interested in improving the code to be able to calculate primes faster. I just want to know what is the significant difference between an old upgraded project and a new fresh one. I am using windows 7 64bit on a 2,4 Ghz Intel quadcore.

View 4 RepliesI'm trying to create a simple file downloader (with GUI). I'm pretty new to Vb.net and I didn't find any usefull information about this in the books I own. All tutorials in the wild are making me more frustrated, since the snippets I use, in most cases, are different classes.What should I use? HttpWebRequest/HttpWebResponse or FileWebRequest/FileWebResponse?How do I save the ResponseStream to a file ?Is it possible to use ResponseStream to define the kind of File (FileInfo) Class to get basic file information (size, extension, etc) is it generally neccessary, if GetResponse().headers gives you most of this info ?
My code, which sucks, because I do not know how to realize the saving....

Dim webUri = New Uri(fileUrl)

but I don't know what the buffer is and what it is for. Should I set some static values or any dynamic which deppends on Stream-data ?
I'm trying to write a program using Internet Transfer Controls, but I'm using Visual Studio (Visual Basic Express) 2010.
Is Internet Transfer Control omitted from the express version?
I've been working on my game for a while, in a non-online multi-player state it is complete. My goal is to add LAN or Internet Play support.My game is coded in Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express, It relies heavily on timers.Currently you play against the AI, and there is a Local multiplayer mode, using mice, controllers or the keyboard.At the moment, it is a two player, (Or 1 player against the AI) game, from my understanding the standard Client-to-Server option wouldn't very efficent, the best choice would be a peer-to-peer system.That being said, a lot of the stuff could be done client side, like for instance, the particle engine and Dynamic Rendering.[code]
View 1 RepliesJUst started to program in VB again after a long downtime (5-6 years).During this time I have been programing in ADA , Java and have therefore forgotten the "VB-way of doing things". Anyway..I'm triyng to build a web-aplication that looks like a normal questionform. [code]When the user hits "Submit" I want to add this information to a Excel-sheet(that exist in the same map as the web-page).Also I want to to program to check if that "Type" of event is already book for that date and time.I can easily do some of this in a "normal " application but is there anything special I have to think about when it's a web-app?Im also wondering how its works when you want to copy info from my application to a excel-book. How do I do that ?

View 10 RepliesFor reasons that are beyond my control, I have three Projects. Projects A and B reference project C. Project A references project B so that it can open a large form in project B. I now need to open that large form from project C, but VB won't allow me to add a reference from C to B because that would create a circular dependency. I found a way around it, though. I created a Timer in A, and when I opened C from A, I passed in that timer. When the user performs a certain action, I enable the Timer from A, and this causes C to open B for me.

View 2 Replieshow I can implement my calendar with VB .net express 2008 and MSSQL 2008 Express. How do I get it to work with datasets, binding source etc.If I go to Properties>settings my connection string is:
Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|CalendarDatabase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True
and I have a table with fields:-
CalendarID
Subject
Location

I can Add the event to the calendar I have the necessary items on my form linked to my table and I can save them to my table:
Me.Validate()
Me.CalendarTableBindingSource.EndEdit()
Me.TableAdapterManager.UpdateAll(Me.CalendarDatabaseDataSet)
But I cant keep the event displayed on my calendar when I close it and open it again.
I originally created a project in Visual Studio Professional 2010. I then saved it and was hoping to be able to open it in the Express (2010) version. When I try to open the project it directs me to a page: [URL]
Do I have to go into the Pro version and export it in a specific way?
Note: By export it I mean just copying the directory (and sub directories), the solution was in.
I'm just using the default SQL Server Express in my vb 2008 express edition as my database server for my database operation. When I tried to update the records on my table I got a runtime error which indicates the error on this line 'myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()'and it highlights a yellow background on it. The runtime error says "SqlException was unhandled: An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near 'Number'. ".

I tried to start using VB 2010 Express with a program I originally developed with VB 2005 Express that I moved to VB 2008 Express successfully a couple years ago. It uses a database file (*.mdf) that is on the computer ( not out on a server). When attempt to run the program in debug mode, I get the following error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsTomMy DocumentsQuizzing StuffQuestion Database 2010QuizQuest ionGameQuizQuestionGameinReleaseQuizQuestionDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
I first made a copy of the entire project folder that was working in VB 2008 Express and gave it a different name. In VB2010 I opened the project in the copied folder and it said it successfully converted the project. I am able to open the Data Source inthe Designer and see the database structure as I expect. I think the project is still using SQL Server 2005 Express (because it is what is checked in the list of prerequisites on the Publish tab).
Note, I have programmed off and on for many years, but fairly new to using databases and SQL Server.
Here is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.
