Is there a way to create users for SQL express in Vb.net?

Sep 11, 2010Lets say I am currently logged into my desktop as two users, One to the local machine and the other to a domain. Each has its own desktop. Each desktop has its own set of icons. I want to essentially hotkey switch users in such a way that my experience is that I end up on the other desktop without having to re-enter my passwords or perform any clicks. In other words. I am on desktop one. I hit lets say "ctrl-Alt-S" and I end up on the other desktop. Any security issues are mute as I am the owner of both login. I want to write this in vb.net and am assuming that I need to use API's.

Apr 12, 2011In VB.NET I used wscript.shell to add a shortcut to the desktop. I didn't realize it created the shortcut on the "All Users" desktop, which means I can't delete it. I don't have admin rights as this is my work computer, and asking for admin isn't an option. WScript.Shell has a createshortcut method but not a remove shortcut method! I've been googling for days with no luck. Windows XP Pro 2002, SP3.

Apr 13, 2010Is it feasible to deploy a VB.NET windows forms application with a SQL Server back end where no users have direct access to SQL Server? The idea is that there is no way someone at the client site with admin capabilities could mess up the data definition, or directly alter data. I always assumed that somebody with the client should get admin capabilities, but perhaps not.
The application will have to have the capability of creating logins, doing backups, perhaps running scripts (encrypted?) For upgrades, and whatever else a user with elevated privileges would do. I guess the application would have a hard-coded account with admin privileges for this purpose. Is this a common way to deploy an application? The application uses SQL Server Express, which is installed with the application. The database will be installed with the application.

Nov 23, 2009I have written a VB.NET 2008 application, incorporating Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel, that modifies an existing Excel 2007 spreadsheet. It works perfectly on my WinXP development computer.When I upload the app to a Microsoft Web Server 2008, it opens the file and reads from the file, but when the app tries to save the file, it throws this exception:"System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800A03EC): 'july2009.xlsx' is read-only. To save a copy, click OK, then give the workbook a new name in the Save As dialog box."The file is NOT read-only, nor is it opened by any other user or app.The app and the Excel file both reside on the D: (data-only) drive.My first instinct was to look at file permissions. When nothing else worked, I literally created a temporary Group, added EVERY user and security entity to it and granted the group full control of the entire D: drive. No luck.
Then I tried manually elevating the permission by running my app as administrator. No luck.Finally, I copied the file to my XP development computer and ran the app there. Of course it worked perfectly.Can anyone please tell me how to give my program permission to edit a file on Server 2008?

Oct 24, 2010I am wanting to get the users IP address (the logged in user will be running the application under there user context on there local PC), but many PC's in our environment have multiple NIC's that have been added by VMWare Workstation, I would like to exclude these type of bridged connections and only show the "primary" NIC on the PC.The following function will get the IPv4 address, however on my test PC it is returning the bridged connection and not the IP Address of the network facing NIC.

My users have a mixture of DHCP and static addresses so cannot limit the NIC to either of these connection types. We tend to have a 172.16.x.x IP range, so is there a way to modify the above function so that it will only return a 172.16.x.x address?
