Pointers - Accessing Variable Addresses In .NET?

Dec 23, 2009

I have to upgrade a legacy VB6 app to VB.NET; this app uses a function call from a .dll that takes a memory address as one of it's parameters. The VB6 app does this with the VarPtr() function, but this function does not exist in .NET. How do I retrieve the memory location of a variable in .NET?

Forms :: Accessing Folders In Application?

Mar 27, 2009

i have an application for which i have created help files which are html files. my pplication resides in a directory for which the system path comes out as c:Document and settingsvisual studio 2005crmscrmsindebugcrms.exeI have the help files put under the crms directory which has the bin as its sub directory.i.e. c:Document and settingsvisual studio 2005crmscrmshelpmain.htmlIn my application i would like to access this file and launch it in Internet Explorer. I dont want to hard code it as this will be deployed on a terminal server and therefore i would like to use a relative path. I searched on the net and could only find solutions that used Application.StartupPath or few others which point to the exe file.

I tried extracting the path before that and managed to get a substring which held contained c:Document and settingsvisual studio 2005crmscrmsTo this appended the helpmain.html, i tried launching the file as followsSystem.Diagnostics.Process.start("iexplore",s);where s, stores the appended string. This is the error i get, cannot open file at location:Document%and%settingsvisual%studio%2005crmsc rmshelpmain.htmlIts not liking the space in the path, is there anyway to resolve this.

ASP.net User Data Getting Crosses Between Users Accessing Objects?

Jan 4, 2010

I've got a website and we just had a huge jump in traffic. Now all of the sudden we're getting sql parameter errors left and right. We switched to a new sql server a few weeks ago and everything has been fine but the added traffic seems to be breaking us.I have a data access class that is called when each user trys to logon. It runs through several tasks before finally updating the users last login date and forwarding them to the administration section.

What I'm seeing from the trace logs suggests that when I'm logging in the first several tasks are using my data (lets say user=birk pass=word). But at some point the accessor class starts sending over the data from someone else who's trying to login (lets say user=abcxyz).Every connection we make to the server is closed when we're finished with it. I'm nulling out all of the accessor objects when I'm finished with them. But somehow different user data from different sessions are making their way into other peoples instances of the object.

I'm not using session/application/cache/viewstate to store the objects so I'm not really seeing how they could edit eachother... Its just really weird and I'm not sure how to even go about researching the problem.This is roughly the accessor class... I trimmed out some of the parts that weren't reliant to the issue

VS 2010: Prevent Multiple Users From Accessing File At The Same Time

Jul 15, 2011

I have written a program in VB 2010 that dumps documentation info into an Excel file. Basically, the Excel file is a log file that keeps track of revisions for design drawings at an engineering firm.

There are approximately 20 people that have access to this program. However, I've run into issues where multiple users may be using the program and trying to send info to the Excel file at the same time. The Excel file is set to read only. My program opens the file with write access, and dumps the info into the appropriate cells, then closes the file. If one person is in the process of using the program, it causes an error with another persons system if they try to use it at the same time.

In some cases, it causes my program to crash, and it leaves the Excel file open on someones system.

Typically, my program would only have the Excel file open for a couple seconds. So, the issues mentioned above are rare, but they do happen.

I'm looking for ideas to prevent this issue from occuring.

Creating A SMTP Server That Has The Ability To Hide Ip Addresses In Email Headers?

Sep 5, 2009

I have taken an interest in creating a SMTP server in vb.net that has the ability to hide ip addresses in email headers.I see that some people claim that it's possible around on the internet, but I haven't seen any direct source code to create an anonymous smtp server in visual basic 2008.Now I know that it's legal to send emails via a masked ip address and I believe that it's also fair since some people believe in anonymity, but I am in all means against spammers.

Forms :: Opening Files - Allows Users To Select Picture Files And Then Categorize Them Into Folders

Jul 9, 2009

I'm currently working on an application that allows users to select picture files and then categorize them into folders. Now I'm having two issues that are probably simple to fix but I only have a year of experience with vb so I just don't know how to fix them. The first and biggest issue is that once the user has selected and categorized a file, I want the program to select the next file in the folder that the first file was moved from. This way the number of clicks required is minimized. However I have no clue what I would need to do in order to accomplish this. Also, my other problem is that I want to be able to find the indexof a quotation mark but whenever I put it in the parameter it just reads it as a quote.

Moving Folders To Another Server

Nov 14, 2011

I am trying to achieve something which am doing very wrong, though the idea is present. I am trying to a move subfolders within a folder from the server the application is running to another server.

The code I have is shown below:
Private Sub MoveFiles()
Label2.Text = "F:New Folder (3)TestzippingutilityTestzippingutility1DailyCollection"
Label5.Text = "G:ippinyUtilityTestFolder"
Dim sFilename As String = ""
For Each myFile As String In IO.Directory.GetFiles(Label2.Text, "*.*")
[Code] .....

Problems:
1) myFile - reads files and NOT FOLDERS. This has to move folders instead.
2) ("fi.MoveTo ('destination')", - is not a sqlcommand and its not practically correct. If I ran it as it is, receive teh error message Sqlexception was unhandled. Incorrect syntax near 'destination'.

I would like to have a script to be able to move all the folders from one server to another.. Tried the following script in a batch file:

I can download the files I want. However, the client has insisted on creating different folders which will contain the version number. So the name of the folders would be something like this: 1.0.1, 1.0.2, 1.0.3, etc.So the files will be contained in the latest version in this case folder 1.0.3. However, how can my web client detect which is the latest one?

Users Should Not Have Access To SQL Server

Apr 13, 2010

Is it feasible to deploy a VB.NET windows forms application with a SQL Server back end where no users have direct access to SQL Server? The idea is that there is no way someone at the client site with admin capabilities could mess up the data definition, or directly alter data. I always assumed that somebody with the client should get admin capabilities, but perhaps not.

The application will have to have the capability of creating logins, doing backups, perhaps running scripts (encrypted?) For upgrades, and whatever else a user with elevated privileges would do. I guess the application would have a hard-coded account with admin privileges for this purpose. Is this a common way to deploy an application? The application uses SQL Server Express, which is installed with the application. The database will be installed with the application.

What I want to do is when a cashier swipes there badge to logon to a POS.. it searches the DB to see if the cashier exists. Then, once it establishes that they do exist, it pulls their PIN # and prompts them to enter it. It compares the data retrieved from the DB to the data that they entered.

Accessing Documents From SQL Server Database?

Feb 15, 2009

I have saved documents into my SQL Server 2005 database and they have been converted to bytes. My web page is made with VB.NET in Visual Studio 2008 with ASP.NET. The following is exactly what I need to achieve;

1. Allow user select document with a button

2. Select the document from the SQL Server table

3. Allow the user to download this document.

The error I am getting is that Category is set as Byte and it can't be passed through GetDocument because filePath is a String. I think that I am pulling the file path from the database wrong
