I have a suite of programs that currently store PDF files as BLOBs in a SQL Server database table. The purpose of this design is to take advantage of Adobe's PDF iFilter and Microsoft's Full-Text Search functionality to allow other modules of my suite to run queries against the contents of a PDF file. This has been a huge headache, however, resulting in databases that are gigantic and unwieldy. We have also run into problems getting the Adobe PDF iFilter to play nice at times. Further, re-creating the entire full-text index on an 80 GB database can take a looooooong time (when it works at all!).So, the new idea is to use the open source XPdf library to extract a copy of the textual contents from each PDF file, and instead of storing the entire BLOB, merely store that textual data for the full-text functionality. Then, instead of storing the whole PDF file in the database, it will be stored somewhere on the server's file system. My issue relates to that last bit, storing the file on the server's file system, and the subsequent serving of that file out to remote users. Currently, with the entire BLOB residing inside of SQL, it has been very simple (though not easy) to manipulate the BLOB from the server to the client and vice versa. Sending the files across the network in chunks worked out well, too. I'm not sure how to do what I want to do now, though. I'm thinking that it's not a good solution to simply make a network share where all of the PDF files are stored and let the remote user view them by issuing a: Process.Start("{remote file share}filename.pdf")What I would LIKE to do is the following:
1. A Search is run, and the end user selects a file for viewing.
2. The SQL Server knows where the file resides on the local file system.
3. Something (on the server) issues a command to create a temp copy of the file at a safe location that is shared over the network.
4. The client's program then opens the file using a web browser.
Advantages:
1. The main body of the PDF files are protected and hidden from the prying eyes of those who shouldn't see them.
2. PDF files with Fast Web View enabled will load in a linear fashion, improving user experience.
Drawbacks:
1. I don't know what the "something" is in #3 above.
2. I don't know what happens when a file type other than ".pdf" is the target of the URL in a web browser. I know simple image formats will just open, but what if the file is ".doc/x". What about any other file type? Is it the same as issuing a "Process.Start("") to the UNC path?

OK, to make a long story short, programmatically generated data is taken back to the original page and the goal is to have this information cause checkboxes (hard coded into the aspx page) become checked.
Using feedback, the exclamation below confirms that I want the found control ctl to be checked:Dim ctl As Control
For Each ctl In form1.Controls
[code]....
I'm not sure what to put for XXX and my gut feeling is this is really easy. ading my question. I went through pages of search results on "VB Programmatically check checkbox" and found pages that should have had an answer that worked

store and retrieve image in a SQL Server database with vb.net.:Well, the application in vb.net seems to have a database which can accessed by the LAN computers so the SQL Server 2005 database allows remote computers to share its database once the other computer application requests database from the server. So, every other computer has to store and retrieve images in SQL Server 2005. For example, comp1 has to store images taken into the server and retrieve it like tableadapter.
I am using bindings and tableadapters to store the details in database and retrieving information from db. Please if you have code or anything which is working for me, please post it here... how to store image and retrieve it SQL Server through vb.net provided there's LAN computers who are also sharing the SQL Server database.

I use AES encryption in my vb.net 2008 windows forms apps to ....
1. Store user passwords in sql server express database in encrypted form
2. decrypt the encrypted Sql server express connection string password on the fly when connecting to SQl Server over a vpn or direct to web based sql server database
3. decrypt the encrypted ftp site password on the fly when my application connects to my ftp site to upload client's database backups
The issue I have is that the secret key for the encryption / decryption is hard coded within the encryption/decryption functions. So anybody who decompiled my application would be able to generate the same encryption, as they would have the encryption secret key How can you hide the encryption secret key so that if anybody decompiled my app they could not reproduce the decryption function

I'm working on a project right now that basically prints a string to the field that has focus in internet explorer and there's quite a bit of user specified information that needs to load when the vb program loads. Should I use a text file to store and retrieve the settings or a database? I'm a new programmer and I don't really have a clear idea on when I should use a text file compared to a database or the registry to store info. Also, if I use a database like access 2007 for example, wouldn't an end user run into an exception if they don't have that software installed on their comp? Is there a universal database format? I've linked some screenshots of the prog if you want to get an idea of how much info I need to store.

switching our database over to UTF-8 (multi-byte char, unicode) encoding from IBM819 (single-byte char, Latin1 subset), because of a new requirement to support text entry of Czech characters.I've just been reminded by a colleague of the nchar and nvarchar column types, which neither of us has actually ever used.
If I were to define the relevant columns as nchar and nvarchar instead of char and varchar, what would I have to do to allow my currently-IBM819 database to work with this new IBM819-incompatible text coming in from my .net application?Would all conversion be automatic? Would I need to write some scary conversion code?
EDIT: Right, I defined an "nchartest" table containing a single column, "ntest" of type nchar(500).I connected to that via .net code and confirmed that 500 chars of lorem ipsum could be entered:
Dim insertString As String = "INSERT INTO nchartest VALUES (?)"
Dim insertCommand As New IfxCommand(insertString, cConnection, tTransaction)
insertCommand.Parameters.Add("incident_recno", IfxType.NChar).Value = "[lipsum]"
Return insertCommand.ExecuteNonQuery
I then replaced the lipsum string with 100 or so chars of Czech text, and attempting to insert that caused an IfxException to be thrown by the .net Informix interface, with the message ERROR [HY000] [Informix .NET provider]Unspecified System Error = -21005.
Following up on some research I did yesterday, I tried setting my CLIENT_LOCALE setting in my connection string to en_US to match that reported by Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture, but that connection could not be opened due to ERROR [HY000] [Informix .NET provider][Informix]Unable to load locale categories.
Following that, I tried setting CLIENT_LOCALE=en_US.unicode, which produced an ERROR [HY000] [Informix .NET provider][Informix]Unspecified System Error = -31142.

I want to move my programs and the database to another computer and hard-disks. It looks to me as though I nearly have to re-create the controls and rewrite some of the code to make it so the programs still work after the move. At least with ODBC all I would change was the DSN definitions external to the programs. Is there an easy way to move or rename a database without loads of work?

On the main form of my application, I have a Rich Text Box which is where the user will be entering information. The text is black. then, i have a button which calls the dialogue "Notes" A dialogue appears, with a rich text box. the user should then be able to enter text into the box, click "OK", and the text entered into the Notes dialogue be inserted to the rich text box on the main form -- with the font colour "Red". The rest of the text in the main rich text box on the main form should remain black.

I'm doing a project where we are re-creating a very old system. The client wants the same base functionality and some improvements. One of the things I'm currently working on is the note-system. These are used as flags of some sort, but are also used as a comment field for some products or client profiles. In the old system you could write the text and save it like you would get in a .txt file. They want the new one to be able to do word formatting such as:
Different font sizes (Only some parts of the text)
Different font colours (Only some parts of the text)
Underlining of words
Bolding
Italics
Tab-spaces
Those are the specs they want. What I need to know is the following:
1) How do I do that?
2) Currently they store all these files on the server as text files and the database have paths that refers to each file. I want to be able to save a text file with that formatting to the HDD of the server like in the old system.
3) If possible I would like to save that text to the database with the formatting.

I'm Making a Simple syntax highlighter and I'm Doing the highlighting in the text Changed event of a RTB and for obvious reasons I can't re highlight the whole document each time someone presses a key so i highlight one line each time the text changes. But this creates a Problem. If someone pastes code into the RichTextBox It only highlights the last Line. So is there a way to get if the user typed the text in with his keyboard or pasted it from the clipboard in the text Changed event?

This is my first attempt at creating a Winforms application, and I have been developing in the .Net Framework (Silverlight, ASP.Net, WPF) for about 6 months. So, my appologies if this is a newbie question.
Basically what I am doing right now is taking the drawings of a stylus-based input, and storing them into an image field in a SQL Server database. Then, in another form, I go and get that image out of the database, and load it into a picture box. It works, but it is rather "sloppy" how it got there. When the user clicks save, it stores that image into a temporary folder, then converts it to a byte array and throws it into the database that way. Then, it deletes the file from the temporary folder. When retrieving it, it pulls it out of the database in a byte array, then converts it to an image in a temporary folder, thus displaying it on the form.
Is there a way that I can just bypass the storing of the file onto the user's harddrive both times, and go from byte array to picturebox?

I want to create program in vb2008 express with ms access database. Can somebody help me so i can learn how to program using classes hard coded. I have learned vb6 before but it has a big difference on vb2008.
I have a database named "DATABASE" in ms access 2003 and the details are: Table :
EMPLOYEE(EmpNo, EmpName), DEPARTMENT(DeptID, DeptName), CATEGORY(CategoryID, CategoryName), SUPPLIER(SupplierID, SupplierName), ITEM(ItemID, Itemname), ITEMLIST(ItemListID, ItemID, ItemDescription), INVENTORY
[CODE]...
All the CAPITALIZED name are Table and all items inside the parenthesis are fieldnames. I don't know where to start on working on this RECORDS. I was able to understand visual basic 6 a bit, and i am trying to apply the coding to VB 2008 but all i get is errors. I am hopeless now and i need help to be able to start my programs. If someone can give me a sample code, i think i would be able to trace the line of code to be able to understand it. I am currently an inventory manager on the small company i was working with and i like to organize my record by using database.

everyone! I've been at this for a while, and I'm not sure how this issue can be resolved:I'm working on a project in VB.Net, and I have a form with a rich text box. I have a groupbox with 4 radio buttons inside that are intended to change the font color of the text. Coincidentally, I have to repeat this same functionality for a 2nd set of radio buttons that would change the text font family.
At any rate what I've only been able to do is the following to successfully change the font color of whatever text I highlight in the rich text box:
Private Sub rbtnBlack_CheckedChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles rbtnBlack.CheckedChanged
rtbxTextEditor.SelectionColor = Color.Black
End Sub
Private Sub rbtnRed_CheckedChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles rbtnRed.CheckedChanged
[Code]...
Is there a way that I could write a sub (I'm assuming I would use a sub, since I don't think I need to return anything, thus eliminating the use of a function) that would handle the action of changing the selected text color in the rich text box without having to use a separate sub for each radio button? Mind you, per my teacher's specs, she doesn't use a button handler for any of this.
