Store User Passwords In Sql Server Express Database In Encrypted Form
Sep 2, 2009
I use AES encryption in my vb.net 2008 windows forms apps to ....
1. Store user passwords in sql server express database in encrypted form
2. decrypt the encrypted Sql server express connection string password on the fly when connecting to SQl Server over a vpn or direct to web based sql server database
3. decrypt the encrypted ftp site password on the fly when my application connects to my ftp site to upload client's database backups
The issue I have is that the secret key for the encryption / decryption is hard coded within the encryption/decryption functions. So anybody who decompiled my application would be able to generate the same encryption, as they would have the encryption secret key How can you hide the encryption secret key so that if anybody decompiled my app they could not reproduce the decryption function

I need to be able to accept a password from a user in a WPF app, encrypt it then store this in a database and be able to decrypt later on. However I'm not sure how to implement this.
This is completely trivial so whether it's safe or not doesn't matter. All I need is for it to get working only I'm unsure exactly how to do it. I've tried playing around with the DESCryptoServiceProvider() but haven't gotten anywhere.
To be clear, how exactly do I go about converting a simple password into something that's been encrypted and storing it in the database (and what fields would I store it in). At this point, I'm happy if there's only one key and that key is being defined in the source code.

What's the simplest way to upgrade a VB.NET site to using encrypted passwords? Are there easy to use encryption algorithms built in to System.UI?My site is using plain text password storage, and it will soon be going to a public server at godaddy from a private one on the local network. I'm going to have to start adding in encryption algorithms to all the password parsing functions, and it would be nice if I could just set a SALT key in the web.config file and Encrypt(password) or something like that.

Im doing a lil coding project in vb .net, i wrote up my login script and can can successful connect to a mysql database (not talking about the wordpress one) and pull login data from a table(called logins, fields are just username and password) to use for logging into my application. When i looked at the password fields in the wordpress database all the passwords are like encrypted and are random characters.
So the problem is im not sure of what type of encryption it is, and how I can utilize it for my login form in my vb project. I havn't tried coding this since i was certain if it was possible.

Can someone tell me how Active Directory stores it's passwords for users? Is it like this answer : storing passwords in SQL Server Is it a hash and a salt or multiple hashes?
EDIT I ask because I want to mimic the way they store them for a custom authorization application I want to build. Or if someone can offer a existing framework or class that handles user authorization for a web application. If I can use asp.net membership for multiple applications using web service that would be even better.

I have a scenario that has been troubling me for years. If you have to connect to a database or other service (like a web service) using a username and password, where would be the safest place to store this information if you are connecting through a .NET assembly? I understand that you would have to encrypt the password, but then you run into a kind of chicken-egg problem -- fine -- you can encrypt it, but then where do you put the key?In .NET, you can't hardcode the password because you can decompile .NET code.
I looked at using assembly based rights with Isolated Storage, but MS recommends against storing unencrypted secret items there because priveledged users can gain access, so again, we are moving the problem from point A to point B. So for examplem, a domain admin with no need to know about the information in a database would be able to get access because of the ability to be an admin on any workstation on the domain.You can encrypt App.Config and Web.Config, but I believe priveledges users can access the keys. I think you run into the same problem with DPAPI.
I had considered storing the passwords, encrypted in a remoted database and getting them through OS authentication, but our department prohibits the storage of passwords on database servers. I am pretty sure I am stuck and wanted confirmation.

Here is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.

Basically i am trying to create a programme, which needs to have some authorisation.
When the application starts up, it starts straight into the login screen.
I want the Username and Password textboxes to read the database and if they match then progress to the next form but if they dont match then a message box will appear.
I also want to create groups of people so if a certain group of people log in they go to a certain form and if the another group of people log in i want them to go to a different form.
Also i want the password box to be * instead of visable text.
dbProvider = "PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;"
dbSource = "Data Source = D:/Users.mdb"
con.ConnectionString = dbProvider & dbSource

It's probably just a case of me not looking in the right place or not seeing the obvious, but does anyone know if a machine with just version 2.0 of the .NET Framework should be able to run a VB.NET Express application which accesses a SQL Server Express database file? Or is there an additional requirement for a non-development machine to have some kind of SQL Server Express runtime component in addition to the 2.0 Framework?It seems to be counterintuitive to expect that a VB.NET application would be able to access any kind of SQL Server data without having some kind of SQL Server host component (Express or otherwise) installed. But then again, it seems just as counterintuitive that Microsoft would require the download and installation of the new framework as well as a separate database runtime in order for the average user to run an application with accesses a local SQL Server Express database.To me, it runs contrary to the whole concept of XCopy deployment to require more than just the application's files and .NET Framework for an application to run properly. But nothing I've read so far explicitly indicates that a user would require anything more than the app files and the framework to run an application which accesses SQL Server Express data. But...I can't get any VB Express applications which uses a SQL Server Express databases to run on any machine that doesn't have SQL Server Express installed.What am I missing?(Apologies if this isn't the right group to post this in.

I'm actually a beginner in VB express. i made about 10 easy programs, now i decided to make one a bit difficult. I'm stuck at the beginning.In first form i have 2 Textboxes and 1 Button (1username, 1password, button - sign in) and then another 2 Textboxes and 1Button (1username, 1password, button - register) I want to make something like this for beginning: When you register the infos from textboxes (username & password) are saved in some file (let's say in info.txt or info.ini). I actually want to know how to automatically save these usernames and passwords in text file when you click register button, so when you want to login, you have to use registered username&password. So if there in text file is not the username you registered or typed in textbox you can't login.

I am coding a program that will allow the user to input 5 payrolls for Store 1, Store 2, and Store 3. The total of the 5 payrolls are then added together and shown in the respective Store's labels. A total label is also there to add up all the totals into one number. The numbers in the label must be in currency form. My problem is the numbers don't add correctly when I hit calculate. The first two numbers add together, but then after that the number just seems to subtract a random amount.
So far I have this --
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click

store and retrieve image in a SQL Server database with vb.net.:Well, the application in vb.net seems to have a database which can accessed by the LAN computers so the SQL Server 2005 database allows remote computers to share its database once the other computer application requests database from the server.So, every other computer has to store and retrieve images in SQL Server 2005. For example, comp1 has to store images taken into the server and retrieve it like tableadapter.
I am using bindings and tableadapters to store the details in database and retrieving information from db. Please if you have code or anything which is working for me, please post it here... how to store image and retrieve it SQL Server through vb.net provided there's LAN computers who are also sharing the SQL Server database.

In the beta version of Beta2 of Visual Studio Professional, when I choose add new connections, I can select a I can select a " SQL Server (SQL Client)" datasource, which works great with my SQL Server Express DB running on the local machine.
In VB2008 Express, though, I can't select a "SQL Server" in the datasource dropdown. I can only try to connect to a Microsoft SQL Server Database File.
When I actually try to connect using the .mdf file that is being managed by my local SQL Server, I get an connection error -- can't make connection to the server (and the usual message about enabling remote connections".

create an SQL Server (express) database (.mdf).
most of the example in the walkthrough make use of the pre made northwind database(.mdf)
i will use the database that i will make to get connected from my application. the connection would client-server and what i have noticed, that this is possible if your database is an SQL version with extension filename of .mdf.
Or if its possible to create this database just using the Visual Studio 2008 Pro(90-day trial)

I need to write a program allowing the user to enter up to five passwords at one time. I have the textboxes set the way I need. When the user presses the button, the code should check every password they ve entered, and flag any passwords that are invalid. A valid password includes the following:
At least 6 and not more than 15 characters
At least one uppercase alpha character
At least one lowercase alpha character
At least one numeric character
I'm a little confused about how to check each character of the entered passwords for these conditions.Because it must include alpha characters, I believe I have to do something with ASC and CHAR variables. This is my first post and I need to have this done within a few hours, haha. Help would be awesome.
