Adding A Database To An ASP.NET Web Service?
Aug 28, 2009
What I am trying to do it create a server application for all of the clients in my organization to connect to. I think the best way to do this is to use a web service.
Anyway, if I use a web service I need the web service(server) to connect to the database. In MS Visual studio when you add a web service project the data menu disappears and you can't add a data source to the project. There may be a workaround for this by hand coding this, but I am not sure how to do it. This is my first time working with a web service and ASP.NET so I am a real noob in this area.

I'm just a starter in silverlight and WCF. I came across a very good article here by Miguel A. Castro which teaches to add the WCF manually. I have the contract service setup and the only thing I left is to get the data back from the service in the silveright. I have a hard time translate the code to vb.net.
BasicHttpBinding basicHttpBinding = new BasicHttpBinding();
EndpointAddress endpointAddress = new EndpointAddress("/Person.svc");
IPersonService personService = new ChannelFactory<IPersonService>(basicHttpBinding, endpointAddress).CreateChannel();
[code]....
How should that be written in vb.net?

I have an executable that now has a requirement to expose data in XML format via a web service which can be queried by a browser.While I've seen tons about consuming web services and creating web services in web projects, I've not found anything that adequately explains adding such a service (or an equivelant) to an existing Windows app.

Recently working in vb 2010 express. I'm using service-based database which is based on SQL Server. This database will be deployed at the server. Is it possible that multiple vb.net programs, which are installed in remote computers or client computers in the same network, connect to this database simultaneously? Does the service-based database support multiple connections?

i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:
Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a
generic class and is not marked as
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be
exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit
interface as the default interface to COM using the
ComDefaultInterface attribute.
It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.

I have a class library in VB.NET that does a NET-envelope for an USB device driver.There is only one function of that driver that I could not envelope in a traditional class, but I had to put it in a Windows Service as described here:Sharing a class property (field) between applications.The Windows Service works fine, but I have now two projects for my NET-envelope: the one with the class library, the second with the windows service and I do not like the idea to maintain two distinct projects for the same driver.Is it a good practice (or even if possible) to add a windows service class to a normal class library (without creating its own project as described in the vb tutorial)?I know, in any case I should create a separate setup only for the windows service, but in this way I could have together all the classes that envelope my usb device driver in only one project.

I want to create a log in and registration form in VB connecting to a sql database.
Databse Name: Users
Table Name: UserDetails
Table Fields: ID, Username, Password
The ID field was specifed as primary and self incrementing by 1 and the table has one username and password (being Id: 1, Username: peter, Password: admin). The Login form works, it checks to see if the user exists, if they do, they gain access, if not a message box is displayed. The Registration form however does not and I have no idea why, its probably something simple but yeah, hence the reason Im here! When I register I can add a user fine, and it wont allow me to add the same user, but when I look at the table, it is not updated :S and I have no idea why!! Even after registering the user closing the application and starting again, say I registered the following:
Username: Fred
Password: 123
Then I login with these credentials, it works. When I close the program and reopen the program, it still works and will not allow me to register a new user being Fred, 123. However after 3 or 4 minutes when I try again, the user no longer exisits and I can re-register with set credentials? The code is shown below (1st the login form that works, second the registration that doesnt).
Public Class Login
Private Sub btnOK_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnOK.Click
Dim connection As New SqlClient.SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Users.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True")
[code]....

1. I have a windows service type of application that first creates a database on the local SQL server (and a table). It then starts putting data into the table.
2. This works fine when running as a normal application but due to permissions, when it is run as a service, it can create a database but then fails to connect to it to create the Table. I understand that because its a LOCAL SYSTEM service, SQL might have problems but why does it let it create a database but not a table?? .
3. Is there anyway I could hard code a USER NAME for this database my application creates and then use it to get in? As it uses an exclusive database, I don't want to prompt the user for an SA account (and their sql may not be mixed mode).

I'm developing a program working with database. Id like to use the Service base database but it gives me an error when I try to add it in my project Project > Add new Item > Service-based database
I wanted to use this database so I could make a table in it.
Error:
Connections to SQL Server Files (*.mdf) requires SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Pls verify of the component or download from the URL
go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=49251
But when i go to that site its just the vs express websites.
Im using VS2008 Pro. I also installed other files like SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU
Am I missing something that i need to install?
I already have "SQL Server Management Studio" listed in All Programs> Microsoft SQL Server 2008
Even the SQL Server Compact 3.5 is already installed
How will I know if I properly installed the required components or application?

I am writing a vb.net client application that uses a web service to connect to the remote database.So far I am able to connect to the web service and read, add new and delete data from the database. I am having a hard time updating data.
I have a datagridview control that is bound to a dataset retrieved from the remote database using the web service.When a record is edited in the datagridview control, I need the dataset that is bound to that control to be updated and then that updated dataset to be sent to the webservice to update the remote database.
My client code in the btnUpdate_Click event
dim new_ds as new dataset = datagridview1.datasource
Dim es As New testwebservice.equipmenttracker 'the web service reference
dim msg as string = es.updateequipment(new_ds)
messagebox.show(msg)

WinFormsApp Login passes information to .php (server based) Login (provided credentials are correct) to DB to retrieve Decryption Key. WinFormsApp then uses Decryption key on Hardcoded encrypted connection string and renders application usable.This would then eliminate the necessity to encrypt/decrypt a connection string at runtime, virtually rendering any unauthorized person with a useless software.

I am working on a database for a program. I used the .mdf file, created a table, and tried to store data in it.I did not build the program yet. I am still using it on a test drive or debug mode.I added three records to the database.I closed the program for 10 minutes and went back to writing code for it.When I opened up the program again, the database only showed that I had one record.This happened before and after I wrote other code for my program.I only started having the problem today?Is it possible that there is not enough room in the database to store all the records? The variable sizes for 3 of the fields are 400, 500,500, and 1000 and the other fields are like 50 each.All together there are 7 fields. I encountered the error after i had made one of the fields a look up field.In this field, basically I loaded categories stored in an extra files into the comboBox so users can select values without having to retype it.
Can you tell me what the error is and how I can fix it or what I am doing wrong in the program?How do I set up another table and query it to pull the values I want for the comboBox field?

I am connecting to a web service that returns a dataset that I use as a datasource for a windows client datagridview.
Once a user has made changes to the datagridview record(s), how do I get those changes back to the connected dataset and back to the remote database.
I wrote the sql update function in the service:
Code Snippet from web service
<WebMethod()> _
Public Sub Update_equipment_repair(ByVal repair_id As Int64, ByVal date_entered As DateTime, ByVal date_sent_in As DateTime, ByVal date_returned As DateTime, ByVal damage_description As String, ByVal vendor_id As Int64, ByVal repair_description As String)
[Code]....
This displays the records perfectly and I figured out how to delete and insert records via web service.
writing updates from the datagridview back to the database.

I've been researching for days and I've gotten to the point where my WCF service creates an Access object via com/interop.I've ran the Open Current Database call for the Access object without an error but Application.CurrentDB is still nothing/null. If the CurrentDB is nothing then I surely can't call Application.Run "myFunction" I realize WCF services aren't meant to be user interactive, but it's a long story why I'm trying to go this route. Basically I need to have a proof of concept ready sooner rather than later and the alternative (correct) route involves the complete re-writing of a large complex access VBA application. It's not a permissions issue, I have the IIS user names added to the security tab. What I really need is a way to set Environment.UserInteractive to true so my WCF service can create an instance of Access on my server machine, run the VBA functions, close out, return true.I'm using VS 2010 for the WCF, IIS 7 for my server, Access 2010 for the VBA application.
