Now we need to pull data from Source database, manipulate it and push it into the destination database on daily basis.We are planning to use VB .Net for this and would like to know if this is feasible. Using windows forms through VB .NET, is it possible to create a exe and schedule the exe on nightly basis to pull the data from source to destination.how to do this as for manipulation of data, there is no intermediate database for us?

Aug 26, 2009I am designing a fairly small application to manage a waiting area for a clinical department. There will be a receptionist who books appointments and updates exisiting appointments to say that a patient has "Arrived". In seperate rooms will be nurses who call patients who have "Arrived" and update the appointment as "In Session" and finally as "Discharged". The appointments are viewed in a flexgrid with nurses across the top and time down the left, patient names are displayed at the relevant times and the cells are shaded a colour to represent the current appointment status ("Booked", "Arrived", "In Session" and "Discharged").
I am using SQL Server as the back-end and Visual Basic 6 (I know) as my front-end.I have been told that there will be 2 or 3 nurses plus the receptionist logged in to the system but I would like to cater for growth.My question is what is the best mechanism to use in order to reflect the status change made by one user on the screens of the other users currently logged in?
I have been thinking about using a timer to refresh the data at a set interval but I do not want to keep hitting the server excessively (although what is considered excessive? we would be talking about a call for data every 60 secs per user). Plus the server could be serving data for many other applications so this is another consideration.Alternatively I have been thinking about sending some kind of message via Winsock to the other users notifying them of data changes as they happen. I don't have a lot of experience with this and am concerned about clients not receiving messages and users seeing old data. It also seems strange to me that once the days appointments have been retrieved from the database that "in theory" a client could go the whole day without having to query the database again to pick up changes - kind of scary.Some information on the data:We would probably be looking at around 100 appointments per day We capture patient name, date of birth, date and time of appointment and appointment status.What is the standard approach / best practice for this kind of scenario?

DB/Reporting :: SQL Database With Windows Service?
May 14, 20081. I have a windows service type of application that first creates a database on the local SQL server (and a table). It then starts putting data into the table.
2. This works fine when running as a normal application but due to permissions, when it is run as a service, it can create a database but then fails to connect to it to create the Table. I understand that because its a LOCAL SYSTEM service, SQL might have problems but why does it let it create a database but not a table?? .
3. Is there anyway I could hard code a USER NAME for this database my application creates and then use it to get in? As it uses an exclusive database, I don't want to prompt the user for an SA account (and their sql may not be mixed mode).

Jul 14, 2011i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:

Windows Service Interacting With SQL Server Database?
Dec 24, 2010I have a windows service application that is meant to interact with SQL server database (INSERT, UPDATE, ETC). The windows service application is also multi-threaded.I created an "App_Data " folder to keep my database and used app.config file for connection information, etc.
After installing and starting the service, nothing happens, the database doesnt get updated, etc.
Has anyone ever written a windows service application that interacts with a database? Kindly advice me on how to overcome this problem..
Windows Form With Push Button And Label
Jul 12, 2011So I need to make a windows form where it has a button to push and a label. There needs to be a list of 10 words/phrases. And when the button is pushed a random word/phrase is put into the text of the label. I have a section of code/psudo code but it keeps saying I am missing declarations when I try to run the program in debug...

Oct 30, 2007I have a simple Windows Service that reads from an Excel spreadsheet and imports the records into a SQL Server 2000 database table. Before it loads it checks if the file has been successfully imported before (using filename) and whether any of the records in the file have been imported before (using primary key). If these checks are ok I load the records into a datatable and then update the datatable to the database.
However, I need to do this in a transaction as I want to ignore the whole file if there is an error. The file goes to a discarded folder and the user gets an email with why the import failed. (This is likely to be because the store the record is for is not yet added to the database and the referential intergrity of the db fails). If there is no transaction the records before the failure record are imported. When the file is imported again (the store has been added to store table) the file is then rejected because duplicate records are already in the db.

Can you have multiple instances of the same Service class (that bind to different addresses or ports), like this?

Or will that cause problems? Should we use two different classes instead?

Mar 3, 2009We have a server with multiple services written in .Net 1.1 and 3.5 running on a Win 2003 server. Everything runs fine, but when we stop a certain service, an unrelated service stops. I have checked and neither has any dependencies. The service we stop is in 3.5, and the unrelated service that incorrectly stops is in 1.1. We get no error messages, nor event log errors, so we are baffled.Does anyone have an idea as to what may be causing this?

Mar 21, 2011I have a VB 2010 program with a single-table Access Database.I have selected the option to copy the Access Database to the output directory.When doing so, the program copies the original database to the inDebug folder.I want the original (NOT the copy) to be modified when the program is being tested.Also, when I attempted to publish the program and run it to test, I got an error which was sourced to be a temporary file (which was the database) that was missing.I think this is a reaction from the "Copy Always" option.
