Monitor A Database With A Windows Service?
May 26, 2008
I'm using VB.NET 2008 (framework 3.5). I would like to check permanently if a new entry (row) is added to a table in particular, (is there some equivalent of the FileWatcher for DB ?...)

I am trying to create a windows service that sits in the background waiting for programs to be started. When the programs start I want to be able to check a unique bit of information for each program (I believe GUIDs may provide this) to see what the program is. If the program is not allowed, I aim to provide a warning to the user and possibly close the program. The aim of the application is to identify when users are attempting to install additional software on to the computer so simply monitoring for a certain executable wouldn't work as msiexec is called for all MSI's and as I only want to stop blacklisted programs...this wouldn't work.

I have the following windows service file:
Imports System.ServiceProcess
Imports System.IO
Public Class fswService
[Code].....
2 problems: first, intellisense error saying: 'fswService' is a type and cannot be used as an expression. second, I can not figure out a way to pass on to the service the path of the folder to watch (which is stored at My.Settings.userPath).

1. I have a windows service type of application that first creates a database on the local SQL server (and a table). It then starts putting data into the table.
2. This works fine when running as a normal application but due to permissions, when it is run as a service, it can create a database but then fails to connect to it to create the Table. I understand that because its a LOCAL SYSTEM service, SQL might have problems but why does it let it create a database but not a table?? .
3. Is there anyway I could hard code a USER NAME for this database my application creates and then use it to get in? As it uses an exclusive database, I don't want to prompt the user for an SA account (and their sql may not be mixed mode).

i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:
Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a
generic class and is not marked as
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be
exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit
interface as the default interface to COM using the
ComDefaultInterface attribute.
It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.

I have a windows service application that is meant to interact with SQL server database (INSERT, UPDATE, ETC). The windows service application is also multi-threaded.I created an "App_Data " folder to keep my database and used app.config file for connection information, etc.
After installing and starting the service, nothing happens, the database doesnt get updated, etc.
Has anyone ever written a windows service application that interacts with a database? Kindly advice me on how to overcome this problem..

I have a simple Windows Service that reads from an Excel spreadsheet and imports the records into a SQL Server 2000 database table. Before it loads it checks if the file has been successfully imported before (using filename) and whether any of the records in the file have been imported before (using primary key). If these checks are ok I load the records into a datatable and then update the datatable to the database.
However, I need to do this in a transaction as I want to ignore the whole file if there is an error. The file goes to a discarded folder and the user gets an email with why the import failed. (This is likely to be because the store the record is for is not yet added to the database and the referential intergrity of the db fails). If there is no transaction the records before the failure record are imported. When the file is imported again (the store has been added to store table) the file is then rejected because duplicate records are already in the db.
Heres my code:

In the past I had the indexing service installed on a Windows Server 2003 and used it to index files for my website. I did this by executing an OleDbCommand with a query and a connection string. How do I accomplish the same thing with the new "Windows Search Service" (Windows Server 2008) by using VB.NET? Does this work the same way so that I only need to change the Provider name which has been "MSIDXS.1" up to now? Case true, what is the new Provider name?

When you create a Windows Service, you create a list of the services you want to start. The default is this:
ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service}
Can you have multiple instances of the same Service class (that bind to different addresses or ports), like this?
ServicesToRun = New System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase() {New Service("Option1"), New Service("Option2")}
Or will that cause problems? Should we use two different classes instead?

We have a server with multiple services written in .Net 1.1 and 3.5 running on a Win 2003 server. Everything runs fine, but when we stop a certain service, an unrelated service stops. I have checked and neither has any dependencies. The service we stop is in 3.5, and the unrelated service that incorrectly stops is in 1.1. We get no error messages, nor event log errors, so we are baffled.Does anyone have an idea as to what may be causing this?

Second, I have a question which I have been trying to find answer for a wile but without any success. How can I monitor Windows Process for any change (create/kill) after run my app ? the only way I have think about it is that used two lists, the first one load the process list on it and the second refresh each 1 sec to get the new one and compare the two to know the difference, but its useless because you cant know who killed or created the process and other information.
As I have been read before, I guess there is a need to implement windows API, hook to detect process changes ? Is there any idea or solution for this?
Note: I am using VB.NET (2010)

What is the best way to handle resolution issues on the monitor when writing a windows app from VB.Net.I developed an app on my laptop, it's widescreen and res is set to 1440 x 900. When I take my app and run it on a machine with an older Analog monitor and the res is 1024 x 768, all of the forms on the right and bottom are cut off.

I want to find the framework class that enables one to choose an image at design-time. I can find the editor that is used at run-time - its the Drawing.Design.ImageEditor. At design time, however, a different editor pops up which allows one to choose an image from resources.I'm guessing I could run some kind of program, then open up the image editor, from the property grid, and see what new windows/classes have been created?

I'm kind of shooting in the dark here - searches don't seem to be productive on this. I want to create a .NET program to monitor the install and uninstall of fonts. If something is installed or uninstalled, I want to run a program to do something.
I thought maybe a Windows Service, but haven't gotten very far with figuring out how to monitor fonts. Is this the right way and if so, what am I overlooking? If not, is there a different way to do this?

I've created a windows service and started a deployment project for it. I have the project installer class in the service project and I've added the "Standard output etc.." from the service project as custom actions for the Deployment Project. When I attempt to install it, I get the error "Specified service already exists", which shouldn't happen (even though the service does exist) because the installer should be removing the old service and installing the new one.
I've checked that the versions are different, and that the Product Code is also different, also RemovePreviousVersions is set to true. Can anyone tell me why it isn't uninstalling my old service when I update then install again? .S: MODS: DO NOT MARK MY POST AS ANSWERED, IT IS RUDE, YOU HAVE NO IDEA IF YOU'VE ANSWERED MY QUESTION!Sorry, it gets ignored in my signature.Mods
