Certain Controls Won't Paint Until Form Resized

May 20, 2010

In VS 2005, I have a form with a few controls (comboboxes and labels) that won't display when the form loads. The controls show up as transparent "holes" in the form, through which I can see my desktop. As soon as I move the form, or left-click on the title bar for about a second (without moving the nouse) the controls render correctly.What do I need to do to get these controls to display correctly, short of forcing a resize?

Interface And Graphics :: Dock Or Anchor Controls So That They Resize Themselves Accordingly When Form Is Resized

Feb 12, 2011

we all know how to dock or anchor controls so that they resize themselves accordingly when a form is resized. It works fine till we have rows of controls on left and right size of the form. But what if have three columns (Columns as in visual sense. I'm not talking about any column control containing other controls) of controls? For example a form having a bunch of controls in the left side, a bunch in the middle and a bunch in the right. There may be a few more bunches in the middle. Now while resizing the form, I want the controls to resize accordingly as well as change their positions to make space for the previous bunch of controls that are resizing.I mean, while the user increases the form size horizontally, the controls of the second bunch should resize and at the same time they should move right because the controls of the first bunch are increasing horizontally too. When the user decreases the form size horizontally the same thing should occur in the reverse order.I can manage it somehow using nested splitcontainers but that's too cumbersome. I would like to know if there's some better way to achieve it, like setting some property etc.?

VS 2008 Invalidating Inherited Controls When Parent Form Is Resized Or Moved?

Jul 19, 2009

Pretending I have a class that inherits off Control, how would I handle the parent form's Resize and Move events within the control? I have a painting glitch that happens when the form is resized or moved. Right now in the form I just have:

vb.net Private Sub frmMain_ResizeMove(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) _ Handles Me.Resize, Me.Move Me.Refresh()End Sub

But this can't be the proper way to do it, considering Refresh() invalidates all children (will be slow and flashing if the form has lots of controls). I want to basically do the above code inside the control.

Edit:This is the glitch after a resize of the parent form:

And this is what the button is supposed to look like:

Also, I experience this issue if something like a message box is dragged over top of it. How can I remedy these issues by forcing a repaint?

VS 2005 Controls Not Allowing Properties To Be Set?

Oct 2, 2009

I have an application that has a main form and several sub forms, but it is not an mdi application. I am pulling data from various tables in an access database and loading into an dataset. In my module I have a sub that is processing the returned tables and is supposed to be setting controls values (radiobuttons and checkboxes checked values mainly) on the sub forms. The forms have not been called previously and when I do a .show() on them, the controls that were supposed to have been set are not, my question is why are they not setting?? Here is the code I am using to set my controls from the module:

AndAlso ds.Tables("FacilityReviewAnswers").Rows.Count > 0 Then
For Each c As DataColumn In ds.Tables("FacilityReviewAnswers").Columns

VS 2010 : Encryption - Allowing User To Set Key?

Oct 6, 2011

I am using the code from the following link. Basically I am using the built in functions in visual basic for encryption (Cryptography). Seeing as there is a lot of code for it, I posted a link to the code I am using.

[URL]

I get what this is doing and how it is doing it...for the most part. My question is how do you let the user set the key to be used instead of it randomly generating one? One of the reasons I want this over the random key is that the user will be able to remember it easier and the key generated sometimes has weird characters in it that not everyone will no how to use. I have tried everything I can think of.

The encryption works good, all I am using it for is to encrypt/decrypt a text document. If this is not too good of an encryption, that does not matter as I am not using it to encrypt any highly sensitive information. All I need is a way to be able to allow the user to set the key, but every time I try to pass a string through the encryption() method instead of a generated key (in the generateKey() method) it will give me an error.

String.Format - Allowing User To Change Case?

Feb 25, 2009

Any way to change the case of a string using the String.Format command. For example, you can do this:
String.Format("{0,50}","My Info")
And it gives it a fixed width string output, I need to allow the user to change the case. All they can pass in is the format "{0,50}" so NO .net functionality, we wrap it up for them. In VB6 you could use a ">" "<" to change the case, surely M$ must have added a way to do this?

Allowing User To Switch From Metric To Imperial When Ok Button Pressed

Mar 3, 2011

I am making a program that calculates various results with variables entered by the user. What I am trying to do is incorporate a function that will allow the user to switch from metric to imperial easily but only when the ok button is pressed. Now I got all the coding done for the metric and everything is working fine. My problem is when I use the radiobuttons to switch the entered variable in the text box to the desired unit it gives me a 0 or a random number in the textbox...

I also have labels indicating each variables unit which I easily managed to change with the text box using this code. :
'Change Labels to Metric
lblMDegreeC.Text = "Degree C"
lblMDegreeC2.Text = "Degree C"
lblMmm.Text = "mm"
lblMmm1.Text = "mm"
lblMmm2.Text = "mm"
lblMm.Text = "m"
lblMm2.Text = "m"
lblMm3.Text = "m"
lblMDegreeC3.Text = "Degree C"

I created all the coding to convert the metric variables to imperial. My problem is changing the textbox text when the user switches the units during run time. The labels change without a problem but the textbox never works. I have attached the coding for the file.

Display Previous Shadow Copy Versions Of File Allowing User To Choose One?

Dec 11, 2011

I'm writing an Excel file recovery program with VB.Net that tries to be a convenient place to gather and access Microsoft's recommended methods. If your interested in my probably kludgy, error filled, and lacking enough cleanup code it's here: http:[url]..... The basic functionality seems to work although I haven't tested graph macro table recovery yet.

It occurred to me that Vista and Windows 7 users could benefit from being offered a list of previous versions of the file within my application if the Shadow Copy Service is on and there are previous copies. How do I do this?I looked at a lot of web pages but found no easy to crib code. One possibility I guess would be to use vssadmin via the shell but that is pretty cumbersome. I just want to display a dialogue box like the Previous Versions property sheet and allow users to pick one of the previous versions. I guess I could just display the previous version property sheet via the shell by programmatically invoking the context menu and the "Restore previous versions choice", however I also want to be able to offer the list for Vista Home Basic and Premium Users who don't have access to that tab even though apparently the previous versions still exist. Additionally if it possible I would like to offer XP users the same functionality although I'm pretty sure with XP only the System files are in the shadow copies.

I looked at MSDN on the Shadow Copy Service and went through all the pages, I also looked at AlphaVSS and AlphaFS and all the comments. I'm kind of guessing that I need to use AlphaVss and AlphFS and do the following?Find out the list of snapshots/restore points that exist on the computer.Mount those snapshots.Navigate in the mounted volumes to the Excel file the user wants to recover and make a list of those paths.With the list of paths handy, compare with some kind of diff program, the shadow copies of the files with the original.Pull out the youngest or oldest version (I don't think it matters) of those shadow copies that differ from the recovery target.List those versions of the files that are found to be different.This seems cumbersome and slow, but maybe is the fastest way to do things. I just need some confirmation that is the way to go now.

Manage A Large Number Of Similar Controls In A User Interface (such As Button Or TextBox Controls)

Aug 23, 2011

There is newer code in a follow up post. I suggest using the code in the later post rather than the code in this one. You can still read this post though. When designing a user interface, one should be conscious of how many individual controls are required to implement the functionality. In some cases an initial design may begin with many buttons or textboxes (for example) but then further review of
the actual required functionality allows for a reduction in the number of unique controls.

But other times, there isn't a better way (which will still make sense to the user of the application) then to have a series of many repeated controls. So in the cases where one can be certain that the best UI implementation for an application will require the use of multiple copies of a given control, then it often becomes necessary to maintain some method of managing all of those controls at various points
throughout the application. Doing so typically requires that one build up some collection of controls which can then be accessed by index in order to work with any given control; but this can lead to a lot of clutter in the code file which handles these control's events. For instance there will be some kind of collection declaration, some recursive routine to find all of the controls of interest, and then any number of event handler methods with long lists of Handles clauses, or additional code loops to wire up the event handling for each control.

Purpose Since most of this functionality could be considered a requirement regardless of the type of control being managed, or its required functionality, it may make sense to wrap all of the control management functionality into a single class. And since our first requirement is a collection of controls, then a base collection class could be the perfect starting point for our control manager. There are a number of existing thread around this topic, with some recent (at the time of this writing) ones being:[URL]..In this, and related, threads I have posted examples of a simple TextBoxManager and ButtonManager control. But again, with so much similar functionality required regardless of the control being managed, it would be technically possible to create a generic ControlManager(Of T As Control) class which can manage any type of control.

[Code]...

So in summary, one can facilitate managing a large number of user interface controls by building a "control manager" class which both encapsulates the list of control instances, and deals with adding and removing defined event handlers for every control it manages. The generic control manager class itself can be inherited and extended into a more specific class on a per-application basis in order to provide more application-specific functionality. Custom User Controls - Correct Size With User Choice

Sep 27, 2011

I have some custom user controls in my .net winforms program that do not display correctly when the user has selected larger text size. This setting:

My controls look like this:
Instead of like this:

The bill to area and ship to area are both custom controls. I don't know if this is contributing to the problem but I do have code in each to scale the phone/fax areas to stretch nicely, like this code from the bill to control,

Private Sub panFaxPhone_Resize(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles panFaxPhone.Resize
panFax.Width = (panFaxPhone.Width / 2) - 1
panPhone.Width = (panFaxPhone.Width / 2) - 1
panFax.Left = panFaxPhone.Width - panFax.Width
End Sub

How can I get my controls to size correctly while still respecting the users choice for larger text (I don't want to just set the AutoScaleMode to None)? After playing with this for a long time it seems to be a problem with anchors in the child controls. See this below image, the inner black box is the control with its border turned on, the text boxes (like name) are anchored left and right and should stretch to fill the control, but don't.

Add Controls AND Code At Runtime

Jan 15, 2012

"add controls at runtime" how to add code to the controls. kinda useless with no code, ehh? all results only told me how to add the control, that's it. well, this result is different. i will teach you firstly how to add controls at runtime, then how to apply code to them at runtime

Firstly, add the controls:

[CODE]..............

Now run it. do you have a button on the form? if yes, excellent. if not, you made a mistake. try again now how to add code? you may have noticed that when you double click on any control, it says private sub button1_click(blah, blah, blah) Handles button1.click where it says handles button1.click is what determines when the code executes under what event for what control (in this case the click event for the button1). this won't work when adding code at runtime. did you notice in the above example i added a with event, and addHandler? this is what creates the handler (same as Handles button1.click)

Now we add the code for the runtime control

[CODE].........

Above, the addressOf button1_click tells the program to execute the sub button1_click when the button is clicked on (as determined by .click) but i know what you're thinking! your thinking "why would we even BOTHER doing this at runtime? isn't it easier to do it at design-time in the first place?" yes it is, providing your not writing a plugin. plugins are code based, not GUI (also reffered to as WYSIWYG). to update existing forms using plugins, you need to use this method.
