Application-level KeyUp/KeyDown Events (not Windows Form-level)?

Apr 1, 2012

I am creating an Excel add-in written in VB.NET. I would like to bind KeyDown and KeyUp events to the spreadsheet to record when the user presses and releases the arrow keys while navigating the spreadsheetIdeally, these events would be built into Excel alongside the native SheetActivate and SheetSelectionChange events, for example. Alas, they are not.

Create Application-Level Mouse Events?

Aug 16, 2011

I have a program that I would like to create application-level MouseEnter and MouseLeave events for. Basically I have an app that I'd like to leave open that would be very opaque when not in use, and when the user moves the mouse anywhere within the bounds of the application, it becomes solid, and when they move their mouse away from the application, it becomes opaque again.

The obvious problem is that MouseEnter and MouseLeave are control-specific and so they fire every time you move over a button or menu or whatever, so Leave and Enter are constantly firing even though you haven't "left" or "entered" the application.

So, is there any way to create mouse events that only fire at the application level?

VS 2008 : Use The Keydown/keyup Events With Buttons In The Same Project And It Not Working Properly?

May 12, 2009

I am trying to use the keydown/keyup events with buttons in the same project and it not working properly. I have 4 red boxes and when I press an arrow key the box should change to green according to which arrow key it corrosponds to. I have this part working fine, however only when there is nothing else in the project. When I add in say 3 buttons, Button1, Button2, Button3 and try runing the program instead of the correct red box changing to green, button outline just moves between buttons 1,2 and 3. I have tried turning tabstop off for the three buttons but that didnt work. how to read the keydown/keyup while still having buttions that can be pressed with a mouse?

Top Level SQL Table Row - Save The Top Level Automatically?

Mar 18, 2011

I have created a simple program which uses a two tier structure of SQL Tables. At the top level, one record holds the date of the activities and linked to it using its primary key as a foreign key, three subordinate tables hold time stamped records. The issue I have been unable to solve is that before adding any of the lower level records for a given date, a newly added top level record must be saved to the database.Doing this manually is simple - but can I rely on my users to remember to do this before they start plugging in the lower level data?I thought not, so I am looking to save the top level automatically.I've failed miserably but I refuse to believe that it's not possible.

Multiple Level Of For Each And Linq In Each Level

Feb 12, 2011

I have multiple level of For Each and in each level, i have a Linq that is the 'In' criteria as in:

[Code]....

It will go inside each for (because the value is not nothing), however, it will only loop (next) in the very inner 'For Each t In tFor'. After it is finish inner loops, the outer Fors' or Next will not execute... even thought there are more than one values in that 'In'... like 'sFor' or 'fFor'. i've noticed while debuging, while break at the for (for example 'sFor', before stepping in), i get the error message:

"Enumeration yielded no results" when i expand the result for that variable and it will not step into it. but if i do not expand the result, it will step in. It seem that some how, once an element is accessed for that 'In' collection, it breaks (meaning does not loop for the rest of the elements) the next for that collection is this a bug or am i missing something in Linq? BTW: i believe it has something to do with the SqlDataReader in the Linq. I'm working with IAsyncResult.

Getting The List Of All Top Level Windows As Well As Thumbnail Images?

Feb 23, 2011

I'm developing a software for my community library, so I'm searching for a VisualBasic.Net code to achieve the following objectives...

1. Get a list of all top windows displayed on a computer...?

2. how would I retrieve the images of these windows...?

basically the scope of the project is to be able to monitor client activity on the library's client computer systems such as being able to tell how many windows are currently displayed on a client's computer and if possible retrieve thumbnail images of the windows...since the library is hooked up to the internet, the software intends to block use of file sharing sites, and pornography. It is easy to block unwanted sites with certain software, that is if you know what site to block, sadly the list of malicious sites is growing daily... so visual monitoring is required...

Windows Authentication For Intranet Users At The App Level?

Aug 16, 2011

My company uses ActiveDirectory, and naturally the IT department wants to maintain control over it and not give control to other users. I'm developing an ASP.NET app (for internal use only) using an SQL Server 2008 database. My question is, how can I BEST use the .NET namespaces and SQL Server to manage access to the app within the organization at the application (or possibly DB) level? I would like the user to be authorized based on their network username as provided by ActiveDirectory. On a side note, I would also like to access their AD contact information.

From my understanding I can use the ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider class or Domain Services in the System.DirectoryServices namespace. There's also LDAP which apparently is another possibility. I'm having a hard time making sense of it all, and much less which is the best option and how to implement it. Can anyone provide me with some direction and possibly some simple sample code?

Application Referencing Lower Level Dll's?

Apr 6, 2011

If I have a low level dll called low.dll. I then create another dll, say my.dll that references low.dll.

Now, if I create an application that references my.dll, I should not have to reference low.dll in the application correct?? This does not seem to be happening. The application will not compile as it cannot see low.dll, even though it does not access it directly.

Handle .net Exceptions At Application Level

Apr 2, 2009

I was reading a couple of articles a while back which I think described a behaviour where you can, in a .net application (specifically VB.net), allow an exception to occur, and then handle it in some kind of application-level exception handler, as opposed to within a Try/Catch block. My google-fu is weak at the moment, so I'm not having much luck guessing what this feature is called in order to find information about it.

I was using xml files in the program filestill now and I need to get around using this because the files can be delete or over written incorrectly. I started using the settings option and realized application level is read only and i cannot use user scope because then it wont be global settings. Is there an alternative to this.

VS 2005 Form Level Exception Trap

Apr 1, 2009

I have a form with a button that brings up a different form. In some versions of this program (don't ask), the second form is shown non-modally, but in my version it is shown modally. The point of that last statement is that the second form can be either modal or non-modal, so an answer needs to handle either one, but the modal option is more valuable. If form 2 throws an exception that is not handled, the exception is caught somewhere on Form1, though the exact place that it is caught is largely dependent on where the exception was thrown from. The question is this: I need a means to trap all exceptions raised on Form2 or anything called from Form2 such that no exception EVER propagates out of Form2 to be caught in Form1. The reason for this is that Form2 HAS to perform some cleanup for reasons that I have zero control over. That cleanup doesn not absolutely require user input, but it would be good to have some.Is there any event that is fired if a form is exited due to a call stack unwinding as an unhandled exception propagates up the stack?

Process Mouse Enter/leave At The Form Level?

I have a form that consists of only a TableLayoutPanel (which fills the entire form) containing a vertical stack of buttons. The resulting app is used in conjunction with another app. What I would like is to have the vb app do something when the mouse enters the form. Unfortunately, all mouse enter/leave events are trapped by the panel or the buttons.

As a quick test I created a form with a tablelayoutpanel (docked to fill the form) containing one button. I added the following code:
Private Sub Form1_MouseEnter(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles
