I am trying to create an application that will make calls to an API. I want this process to be fully automated to run a few times a day. What kind of application in vb.net can be automated? I've created windows applications in the past, but never automated anything.

View 3 RepliesI've got a Word Addin in VB.net and VSTO that exposes a COM compatible object via Word.COMAddins.Object, so that the addin functionality can be called External to Word, without accesses to Word itself being cross-process.The technique worked in VB6, but with VB.net, it still works, but it's much slower than the same code running directly from the addin via a task pane, as if the calls are all cross process when they shouldn't be.Anyone who's ever done Word automation knows that code that runs perfectly acceptably INPROC with Word (in this case the instance of the ADDIN that Word itself loads), will generally run unacceptably slowly out of process (or cross process).[code]And slow as in a factor of about 10 to 1; what takes 3 seconds to run when run directly from the ADDIN via the task pane, takes ~30seconds to run when called from external code through the COMADDIN.object object. I'm guessing that I'm running into some sort of issue with .net APPDOMAINS or something and what +really+ constitutes cross proc calls in .net, but I've found nothing so far that would even hint about this sort of thing.My next step, barring some mystical insight, will be to code up a repro, which could get tricky because of the shear number of elements in play.

I'm trying to make a program that will allow people to queue certain tasks at certain intervals. (i.e. the task is done every 15 minutes, etc.) They can make as many tasks as they want, at whatever intervals they want. How can I possibly make a task queue? Like, how can I queue up code that I already have made to be run every so and so often, according to what the user inputs? And, if 2 tasks are started at the same time, they will both still be done, it's just that one will be done as soon as the first one is complete.

What the Win32 API is? I have looked around but no where really outlines what it is. Is it basically a set of procedures, outlined by Microsoft for programmers in order to get services from the operating system? In essence is it the equivalent to making system calls abd and library calls in UNIX? And yes I now Windows makes library calls too.

The problem is that when there are no settings I need to make two calls with the datareader and it keeps giving me problems. I originally was only using one datareader but made two to attempt resolving my issue, didn't work. Then I tried closing the datareader and I get errors because it returned a nullreference.

I want to use a database table as a a queue...but the processing of these messages cannot be done from the database.I have a table that stores the requests i get from a .Net component. I now have to read the data from these tables and make http calls to 2 webservices. Based on the response received from the webservices, the data gets archived or deleted.I had a few specific questions:
1. How do i make sure that if i pick a record for processing and the http call fails I should be able to go on to the next record, and then come back to this record at the end of the run
2. Is there an alternative to using the database as a queue(like MSMQ etc.), which option is better
3. I want to maintain an audit trail of the record status. Is creating a trigger to log the changes before the edit the best way to do it?
I have a VB6 project that I'm converting to VB 2008. There is a routine in this project to LoadArrays.By passing the proc name and arrayName I want the info loaded into, I can set up a series of calls at application load and have these arrays available throughout the application (Info is used in many areas to populated controls)This routine makes use of Getrows.Example:arraydef = rs1.GetRows.This will load all fields and records into the array.Is there an equivalent in 2008?

In my program, I created a list of a class that contains 5 picture boxes, a button, a label, an identifier, and some other stuff. I've got roughly 65 of these in this list. I'd be stupid to hard code all that in. The identifier is a 2nd way of identifying which specific location I'm working on.
Anways, all this is created at compile time. Works perfectly fine.
I then manually start a background worker that pings a collection of components. Based off the success of those pings, the picture boxes are enabled or disabled. Basically a proactive way to see if a collection of devices over multiple locations are actually working.
It's the background worker that fails because of thread-safe calls.

I am the CEO of Virtual American Eagle airlines. I am looking for some help on how to make an automated PIREP system. PIREP stands for PIlot REPort. What I need it to do is connect to my site, make the pilot login, connect to FSX (Microsoft Flight Simulator X) and FS9 (Microsoft Flight Simulator 2009). It needs to track: that the engines are off, the speeds or takeoff, climb, cruise, and decent. Then I want it to track the time that the wheels hit the runway, the time that the engiines go off, then automatically put it into a list and with the push of a button, send it to our site.

There is a very strange problem with a Windows Service I am working on that I would like to understand why it occurs. The service loops every 5 minutes and then within that loop it loops through keys containing webservice URLs that are numbered such as:

The code that does this check is:

When it hits a key that doesn't exist an exception is thrown and the service stops and waits for 5 minutes until the next loop.This usually works great but every week or two the Windows service will crash on that line without any Exception. The application log has a line from before that line but nothing after, none of the Try Catches are hit (the main one is catching the base "Exception" class).In the Event Log for Windows is the following:

The weird part is that this line of code is executing fine 300 times a day for at least a week which is around 2000 times before that one time it causes a full crash of the application. why this is occurring? I have changed that line of code to not rely on Exceptions and it has been working fine for a week now with no crash so could be something to do with too many Exceptions - maybe causing a stack overflow?
how I can control the tool tip popup or make calls to the text that displays based on a integer value. I'm wanting it to display a text based on a interger value inside an if statment for a picture box. So if the ingteger = 1 then tooltip.text = "" else tooltip.text = "" but that is not the correct syntax.

I am trying to create an interface between a third party application which can make use of C/C++ DLLs, but no interface directly to .NET. What I was hoping to accomplish (not sure if possible though), is create a very basic C++ DLL (not .NET), which the third party application would call directly. This DLL would contain a basic method such as "DoSomething()". Somehow, from my .NET application, I want to "listen" to this DLL and "takeover" the DoSomething() method, and then returning the result back to the DLL, which will in turn return the result back to the calling third party application.
I don't even know if this is possible because I'm sure I would somehow have to get a hold of the memory space of the DLL as initiated by the third party application. Also, it seems that creating a managed DLL does not work, based on feedback from other individuals who have tried this.
I am trying to make my program print out a requistion slip but I don't want to make a report using VB b/c sometimes the printer is not connected and it is better to have a Microsoft Word document and save it as such. So how do I create a Word application from VB? I basically am going to set out a format, make a small table etc. and then whatever the user types in the textbox, it will appear in the slip. (I am using Word 2003)
