I want to insert number for City_Id and City_name , i wrote a query for auto generate number for City_Id,working fine but in the city name i want to avoid inserting duplicate value like if Mumbai is a City ihave already saved then system should not allow that name again. neither in small or in capital or mixed letter.

If there is only one item in the database, then this code works. If there is more than one record then the error is produced that it is trying to produce duplicate values. This is down to the Primary key in my database which is the only thing that cannot have duplicate values. However, when I remove the primary key it has the predictable problem that it goes crazy and does weird things.
I'm using an unbound data grid in Visual Basic. I made the following loop for the purpose of searching each cell and each column for a duplicate value. But for some reason I get a "InvalidCastException" when I try to add a second row.

I want to check for duplicate values before attempting to insert the record, since I don't want the user to go all the way through the form only to find out they can't submit it. So I'm trying to check for duplicate values when the user tries to go to the next page of the form. I wasn't quite sure how to do it, and sure enough I'm getting an error. ("Object reference not set to an instance of an object.") The problem is apparently in my if statement, "If myValue.Length > 0 Then", but I'm not sure what needs to be in place of that.

The problem is: I have a list of objects, with some containing the same PlanId property value. I want to only grab the first occurrence of those and ignore the next object with that PlanId. The root problem is a View in the database, but it's tied in everywhere and I don't know if changing it will break a ton of stuff nearing a deadline.
So, if I have a list of PlanObjects like such.

I want to take a sub-list from that with LINQ (italics mean an item is not included)

For my needs, it doesn't matter which one is taken first. The Id is used to update a datsbase record.
I am building VB.NET application that takes data from text files that are exported from a legacy DOS program. These are written to a datatable and displayed in a datagridview. Right now my code simply loops through the datagridview and inserts the data into the database (SQL Server). There is a requirement now that the client number must be checked before the insert to see if it exists in the database. If it does, then the value of one field (tax rate) is checked against the value of the field in the datagridview. If there is a difference, then the rate is to be updated in the database and the data that was in the database is to be written to a history table for audit purposes. If the client number is not there, then we are to do the insert (which is already written). I want to know what is the most elegant and efficient solution for this problem.
I need to compare what is in the database table with what is in the datagridview, update the history table for records that exist, and then insert new records.

Some of these I am sure are duplicate databases.I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a way to interigate the database objects so as to make a comparison between databases (see if they are in fact duplicates.)I would (ideally) like to get a list of all database objects - such as queries, forms, tables,modules etc.. If I put a primary key on one of the fields I get a runtime error and it complains about the fact it can't add the record twice.The part of the code that INSERTs is near the bottom, bolded and italicized. I put the entire IF statement of code incase my logic is wrong.This is what's being executed when a user clicks a button
