ByRef Parameter With Type Conversion
Mar 19, 2012
I did create a XDateTime class that is able to handle inaccurate date and time. This class has all the CType operators required to convert to and from a string and it has been fully tested during the last months.

I have a legacy COM-component with an interface declaring a property like this (IDL notation):
[Code]...
This interface is implemented in a calling application written in VB6 like this:
[Code]...
Everyting works fine until I try to do the same in VB.Net. VB.Net refuses to compile code where a parameter of a property is passed ByRef. MSDN says VB.Net doesn't allow such parameters. Is there any way I could implement such a property in VB.Net?

I want to make a generic EventArgs sub class that has a write-only property which, when updated by the code that is handling the event, will also update the byref parameter of the constructor of the class.
The code I have so far doesn't work. How do I get the property "Item" to update the "item" constructor parameter so I can retrieve the value that was set?
public class EventArgsSet<T> : EventArgs
{
public EventArgsSet(ref T item)
{

I'm using SharpZipLib to compress files. The library is wrapped in a plugin interface, in a separate DLL. I pass the plugin dll a ByRef parameter to keep track of the compression progress.SharpZipLib, while compressing, will periodically call a delegate sub passed when launching the compression. I can't figure out how to update the ByRef parameter when the delegate is called. If I try to assign the ByRef variable in the body of a lamba expression, I get a 'ByRef' parameter '<parametername>' cannot be used in a lambda expression error.

How can I get the name of the object that was passed byref into a method?
Example:
Dim myobject as object
sub mymethod(byref o as object)
debug.print(o.[RealName!!!!])
end sub
[code]....
I'm using this for logging. I use one method multiple times and it would be nice to log the name of the variable that I passed to it. Since I'm passing it byref, I should be able to get this name, right?This would give you the parameter name in the method and it's type, but not the name of the variable that was passed byref.
using system.reflection
Dim mb As MethodBase = MethodInfo.GetCurrentMethod()
For Each pi As ParameterInfo In mb.GetParameters()
[code]....
If you put that in "mymethod" above you'd get "o" and "Object".

I have a class OrderManager, that takes a parameter of type LocalFuturesList on construction. Now.. It doesn't seem to matter if I use ByRef or ByVal here.. It still references the parent class instance of it. It also doesn't seem to matter if I type New or omit it.. Probably also because it's just an address reference. But why is it like this? And what type of objects "acts" in this way? Further I find that if I change the object in the parent class by deserializing from a file (with my method call shown), then suddenly this reference is broken in some way, so the OrderManager instance now holds Nothing I believe.If my observations are correct I see two challenges:
1. How to pass a list NOT by reference?
2. How to maintain a list reference through deserialization? [code]

I now have SQL Parameters set up and I'm using them to save/delete/add my data. This all works well, except when it's trying to save a combobox to the datatable it appears with the error above.Majority of my comboboxes have datasources, and the valuemembers of these are the actual list items, not the ID's of the list items.I'm not sure why this error could be happening, I'm fairly sure I've connected everything to the binding source correctly; I've checked it a few times.Does anybody know what the cause of this could be? I've looked around a bit and I haven't found much

I am pulling data from a local MSSQL database using a stored procedure, then send the data to a web service. Every part of the component works well except for a pesky problem will a DBNull being returned from the DataRow field, when I know that the field is not null and has valid data. The database and associated INSERT statements that add to this field are designed to not allow NULL entries. When I debug break the program on or right before the line that throws the error I see that the field has valid data for the current row.If I add a null check to the code (as below) the operation continues as normal:
Dim dataResultsTable = Me.myViewTableAdapter.GetData(int)
For Each myDataRow In dataResultsTable.Rows
If worker.CancellationPending Then
[code]....
Why is the read operation returning DBNull instead of the data in the database?
EDIT: Just to be clear, the operation does return the proper data, but the data is not being saved into the variable.

I declare my dates as the following in my code:
Dim DeliveryDate as Date
But i am now trying to declare time however i keep getting an error because i cannot get the type correct. I tried the following but get the following error: "Conversion from type 'Timespan' to type 'integer' is not valid".
Dim DeliveryTime as DateTime
Dim DeliveryTime as Integer
In my database the DeliveryTime type is set to Time(7) so i would assume there should be 'Time' which i could use to declare it, but there isnt. What is the correct type i should be using?
Here is my exact code. There error is Input string was not in correct format:
GraphDate4 = String.Empty
DeliveryProducts = "{ name: 'DeliveryProducts', data: ["

I'm getting the error "Conversion from type 'DBNull' to type 'Date' is not valid."here's the line generating the error.
dtReady.Value = dSet.Tables("Db").Rows(Inc).Item("Fixed_Date")
I'm using a date/time picker control and sending the db value to it. I know that the value is null, but I don't understand why the Picker can't be blank. Is there a way to let it be blank? Or should I set up a way to check for nulls and assign today's date or something just in case?

I am getting the error "Conversion from type 'DataGridViewTextBoxCell' to type 'String' is not valid." When trying to display a cell from DGV in a listbox.I have my variable for the cell reference as follows:
Dim a As Object
a = DataGridView1(4,1)
To insert it in the listbox as follows:
lstLetter.Items.Add(String.Format(a))
I tried:
lstLetter.Items.Add(a)
This will not actually display the entry inside the referenced cell, it shows this in my listbox instead:
DataGridView TextBoxCell { ColumnIndex=4, RowIndex=1 }
how I need to convert this to display.

I've been getting this error when pulling data from a recordset. It is coming from a null entry and as a newbie to VB2008 I'm not sure how to get around this.
here is my code lblShipping.Text = reader("CARRIERCODE")
the error:Conversion from type 'DBNull' to type 'String' is not valid. Basically what i'm attempting to accomplish is to see if there is anything in that field. If so put it into the text box if not leave it blank.
