C++ DLL Returns Only First Character To An Application?
May 2, 2012
One of our technicians asked my to write a small library file in which he would pass a filename and an integer. The library would load the text file and find the integer in the text file referenced by the file name and return a string back to his program. He is working in a third party application that uses VB as its scripting language.So, not wanting to worry about the .net install on some of the older machines that he has his equipment installed on I decided to take a crack at C++ (VS 2010). I am doing applications development in C# and the last time I compiled any C++ code was in VS 6, but I though how hard can it be? Well I am typing here so things have taken a decidedly wrong turn. I started out with the C++ Side.
#include <WTypes.h>
#include <comutil.h>
#include <string.h>the BSTR. Tried SysAlloc, didnt work.
[code]....
If I pass a String to a BSTR as a parameter then pass it back again (like the file name) then the VB side reads in the entire string.

I had a strange error in a VB6 app this morning and it all stems from the fact that IsNumeric is not working as I expected. To me this seems like a bug.
This code displays 4.15877E+62 in a message box:
Dim strMessage As String
strMessage = "0415877D57"
If IsNumeric(strMessage) Then
[Code]....
I am guessing that the runtime engine is incorrectly thinking that the D is in fact an E? I think this is a bug though as the exact same code in VB.NET outputs not numeric Is this a known issue with IsNumeric?

On the publish tab of My Project the correct current version is there, 1.1.0.0 and in Programs and Features under Control Panel it shows 1.1.0.0 but when I reference Application.ProductVersion I get 1.0.0.0.

We're using team build with AssemblyInfoTask to increment the build number in a nightly build. The build number is displayed in the application using My.Application.Info.Version.Build.This has been working fine for years. But since we branched the sources and started using file references instead of project references (have no idea if that's what causes the problem), the last build number is displayed instead of the current one.
The compiled files (dll's and exe's) have the correct build number, if checked by right clicking the file in Explorer and viewing detailed properties. However when the same exe-file is executed, the UI displays the previous build number.If I edit the AssemblyInfo.vb file manually (just set another number, save the file, and set it back again), both file properties in Explorer and the UI at runtime displays the correct build number. How can this happen? What can be done to avoid this strange behavior?

I need to generate a lot of random 2 character strings for my application. it's a VB console application. basically what I have tried for random strings is this:
Private Function GenerateRandomString(ByVal intLenghtOfString As Integer) As String
'Create a new StrinBuilder that would hold the random string.
Dim randomString As New StringBuilder
[Code]....
What is going on? I thought that I used to, a long time ago, be able to just do random.Next.

I was wondering how to implement a custom character set for use by an application, i.e. hex bytes that are read by the program then converted and displayed in the window. If this requires first converting the bytes in a file to an already implemented character set, I'm cool with it - I'll go with whatever works or works best. I'm writing with VB.NET 2010, and running Windows 7 Home Premium x64, by the way.

I am working on a sub that essentially needs to open a text file, and replace all instances of a certain character with a unicode character. I'm trying to do this by reading the original text file byte by byte, converting it to a character, and then either adding that character to a memory stream or writing the unicode character to the memory stream. Then I'm saving the memory stream to the original file.

For each character of this string I want a new character out of the string and then remove the character from the list of characters that still maybe used for other characters. It may not get the same character, you could basically just call this encryption, but it's not what I am making. I don't want to waste my time doing this one hour while VB can do this for me in <1 second.

I am writing a hangman type game and I am displaying the word to the user in a label as all *'s, but I cannot figure out how to have just one of the *'s changed in the label to the correct letter when the user inputs the correct letter into the text box and clicks the check letter button.Everything else in the program works perfectly, except for this part.[code]When I use the .Replace it changes all of the *'s to the correct selected letter.

In my VB.NET application I compare words that are recorded using IPA, many of which have many diacritic marks. In one of the comparisons, I compare the words character by character. But when I iterate over the characters, the diacritic marks come out as separate characters (as I would expect since this is unicode)However, a u character is different than a u plus an accent for the purposes of this program and needs to be distinguished.

I have some code which gets child items for a menu via the GetChildren function which takes a list of menuData: Dim builtMenu As New List(Of MenuData)(_rawData.FindAll(Function(item) item.GroupingID = 0))
For Each menuData As MenuData In builtMenu
If menuData.Children IsNot Nothing Then
menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))
End If
Next
If I check if menudata.children isnot nothing, it always is nothing because the GetChildren function is yet to run (providing the child items, which do exist). If I remove this check and just have this code:
Dim builtMenu As New List(Of MenuData)(_rawData.FindAll(Function(item) item.GroupingID = 0))
For Each menuData As MenuData In builtMenu
menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))
Next
Then I am presented with a Object reference not set to an instance of an object error on menuData.Children.AddRange(GetChildren(menuData))

I've been working with the substring command and after coding up all the things I needed it to do, I saw a post on here where the "For Each" statement was used basically to do the same thing.Lets say we just want to take a string apart one character at a time and add each character to a label. Which would be more efficient?I made a cheap example to show ...
Code:
ABinary = "0110 1100 0001 1011"
For x = 0 To Len(ABinary) - 1

i use this code to split a words:
Dim sWord As String = "Word1~Word2~Word3~Word4"
Dim sResult As String() = sWord.Split(New Char() {"~"c}, StringSplitOptions.RemoveEmptyEntries)
so that a messagebox can show
Word1
Word2
Word3
Word4
but how about if the character to split are 2 or more character instead of "~"? because sometimes "~" is used in some documentation.. i prefer to user "!~!" or "D-:" in splitting words..
