The project requires a form that has textboxes for a students name and the amount of books they have read, and a label where the points they have earned for their reading is displayed. Also a seperate form with About information and yet another seperate form for summary information.
how to implement UI, BL and DAL in a project the way that I see it as a requirement for some projects. The way I am able to do a project now is from a form create an object of a class in which there are properties and functions that do database selects, updates and deletes. Looks to me that doing a project like that is separating the UI from the DAL. In an update button click event I may call Obj. Delete (txtCustID.txt) for example. I don't understand the part of further breaking it down to include a Business layer; in which a vb solution is made up of three solutions. What goes in the BL?Does the BL call the DAL?
I am messing around with some Excel Automation just to get my feet wet and want to call some specific cells in my spreadsheet just for testing. I have one form in the project including a button. My question is how do I tell the button where to navigate to the cell to be tested?
My code for my Excel class is as follows: Public Class Waybill Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click Dim oExcel As Object = CreateObject("Excel.Application") Dim oBook As Object = oExcel.Workbooks.Open("C:\TesterXL.xls") [Code] .....
StrPtr, VarPtr and ObjPtr dont anymore exist in VB.Net.Well now the Problem is i need to use it so i used the new way and declared all Functions same:
Public Function VarPtr(ByVal e As Object) As Integer Dim GC As GCHandle = GCHandle.Alloc(e, GCHandleType.Pinned) Dim GC2 As Integer = GC.AddrOfPinnedObject.ToInt32[code].....
Are there any functions that can be called across the project.I mean we cn use Private Sub ABC() function in the document where it has been declared but is there any way that this could be called from any other form?

I am using Visual Studio 2008 to try and create a calculator program that can convert binary to decimal. I have some code but I'm having problems figuring out what to write as an "argument" when I was to call the function.
Here is the code I have so far.
Public Class Form1 Private Sub btnCalculate_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnCalculate.Click
im calling functions with an IF statement but then not using the returned value for anything... is there a reason that i shouldn't do this? in my form i call the function to run...
I need to build an application that could run code in private function, based on what user has selected using combobox. For example combo box has three values, One, Two, Three. If user selects one, code written under Private Function One() runs and vise versa.

I get this error: Cannot refer to an instance member of a class from within a shared method or shared member initializer without an explicit instance of the class.

I know it has something to do with the fact that the first function is shared and the second function should probably be Public as well but I don't fully understand the reason behind it. Probably not relevant but I'm calling the web method from some javascript.
I have a dll whitch init a thread in dllmain. After than, the calling application call some dll functions which register the remote function of the application.function register done, when the thread works and receives and even, it call the program functions (those I stored register before)int C would be like:
int (__stdcall *f_wmif) (char *) = NULL; INT __declspec(dllexport) __stdcall _DGTDLL_RegisterWMIFunc (int (__stdcall *whitemoveinputfunc) (char *)) { f_wmif=whitemoveinputfunc;
in VB.NET it is possible to omit parentheses when you call a parameterless function. However this can be very confusing because developers could think that a statement is accessing a property instead of a method. this could result in a performance drop if you are calling the method again and again instead of storing the result in a temp variable.is there an option in VS2008 or a compiler option to force parentheses on statements that are calling a method? and if so, would it be also possible that VS will insert missing parentheses automatically if you "format document".
I need to create unit testing project for my current website. The currentw ebsite si written in VB. All unit testing examples are using interface to create mock object. My current VB class does not implment any interface. Can I add interface and implement it to my current class and functions without affecting or changing codes to any pages in my website that call the functions? For examples my current class is like:
I have a midterm project where we must replicate what our teacher has made, it is a convenience store program. I am having trouble calling the functions, he wants us to use these:
PopulateItems => Populate Items listbox based on the category selected GetItemPrice => Retrieve the price for a given item GetItemPriceFromPurchases => Retrieve the item price from the purchases list box (optional. You may not need
[CODE]...
So far I have the first list box populated when the form loads. However outside of that I do not know where to call the function in order to populate the second list box upon selection of the first.
If I have two threads both calling a normal function at the same that appends strings, sometime the output string is a combination from both threads as the function had not finished executing the code before it was called again... Would a shared function wait to finish first?
I hope the question makes sense, anyways. I'm looking to know if in VB.NET, when we call an object's constructor, is there some kind of a reference that points back to the caller? I'm interested because of a corner case where I want the object being created to first be able to validate the existence of some data in the caller before it allows itself to be created. If this validation fails, I plan on throwing an exception. This corner case will never happen at runtime unless the object being created is used improperly by a programmer. The object being created is not inheriting the object I want it to validate, so I can't do anything with the MyBase qualifier.
It's bit of a "future-proofing" issue that I have a (bad) habit of doing. Not critical -- I can always leave stern comments behind as a last resort. Wanted to know if this was possible.
Imports System.Threading Public Class TestClass Private myClassThread As New Thread(AddressOf StartMyClassThread)
[code]....
The result:Application runs, no errors or exceptions.Displayed is the listbox and the Start button.I press the start button and a msgbox says "Not Invoked" as expected and upon clicking OK to that msgbox "Start Button Pressed" is added to the Output listbox control.Immediately following that the msgbox pops up again and says "Not Invoked". I was expecting "Invoked" as a separate thread is trying to use the Output listbox control.Of course this results in the Output.Items.Add being attempted which results in no visible result as the thread is not allowed to directly update the UI control.
Is there a way to call functions within a class upon instantiation of that same class? Basically, I have functions within a class, but I want to automatically call some of those functions simply when there is an instance of the class created.
Basically, I have this structure:
Dim instance as new class instance.function1 instance.function2
I call the function GetDataTable and when it gets to the return line, I get the error message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Dim DB As New DBConn Dim gd As New DataAccess.GetData Dim DT As New DataTable
[Code].....
Updated. I'll see if I can update with the DataAccess.GetData code. I didn't originally put it in there because our shop use it all the time and have no issues with it.

I am somewhat new to object oriented programming and am attempting to flatten a Linq object hierarchy by using a shim class.how to initalize a derived class with property values from a base class?I have two objects, a base object with about 100 properties, and a derived object which inherits from the base object and adds a few additional properties beyond those of the base object. My simple constructor creates the derived object, but I am looking for a way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object.Right now I am using reflection to iterate over the properties individually and I suspect there may be a better way. The following example shows my shim class constructor for the derived class, and two properties:
newProperty1 - a new string property of the derived class
flattenedProperty2 - a new string property of the derived class, copied from a 2nd-level object of the base class
Code example:
Public Class derivedObj Inherits baseObj Private _newProperty1 As String[code].......
Is this the correct constructor approach to flatten the object hierarchy using a shim class? My second question relates to initialization of properties in the derived class. The constructor above creates the derived object, but what is the best way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object? The following code uses reflection to iterate over the properties individually, but I suspect there may be a better way.
Code example:
' property names are in the string array fieldNames
'baseObjQuery is an ienumerable of baseObj
'derivedObjList is a list of derivedObj[code].....
Is there a simple way to initialize values for the properties in the derived object based upon the values of the common properties in the base object?
I wasn't ment to post anywhere, but I'm having a massive headacke.I've searched the Internet, tried many different way, but nothing to do.. I can't fix this, I don't even know why this is happening ..See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

I have a shared Queue that I use to dump various messages contained in different Classes, so I have its type as Object. The prob is, the messages are dequeued and processed but since the message type vary, Intellisense doesn't show the classes properties or methods. How does one find get Intellisense to work to?
