C# - ASP.NET Web.Config File Specifying A DataSource ConnectionString

May 23, 2011

I'm trying to use an 'SQL Express' (or is it SQL Compact?) .MDF file as the datasource on a simple website using a Chart control.

Locally, it works great; but only if the 'AttachDbFilename' has the full path. Am I messing something up, or does it really need to be full path? If so - how do I accomplish this without using something like Server.MapPath()?

.net - Read <connectionstring> Of Web.config From A Console Application?

Dec 20, 2011

I have VB.net console application. I would like to read the (ConnectionString) from a web.config.

Web.config is located at a particular path in my virtual PC, say "C:/mywebConfig"

<add name="MY_DB" connectionString="Data Source=DATASOURCE;Initial Catalog=DB;Persist

Security Info=False; User ID=***;Password=****;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

My code:

Dim connString As String = String.Empty
connString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("MY_DB").ConnectionString

Whenever I try to access it, i get the error not set to an instance of an object or something like that :)

I tried to add the web.config in my Project, but still get the error.

Changing Connectionstring At Runtime

Feb 18, 2010

Im writing a app using vb.net, which has multiple front ends e.g a windows service and a windows forms app. Ive got all my business logic and database stuff compiled into 1 project (producing a dll) then the different front ends as different projects calling the dll.

In the backend / dll project Im connecting to 2 databases using app.config to store the connection strings and DataSets / TableAdapters. This all works fine .... Until

When I deploy the windows app, it deploys the exe and the dll produced by the backend project. when its installed on a client PC, Im need to point the app at a different db server and therefore need to change the connectionstring, but its packaged up in the dll.

is there any way I can use a settings file within my windows app (therefore deployed with my windows app) where I can define the connectionstring, which onload gets passsed through into my dll, so the backend connects the correct database. I know how to pass standard settings through (strings etc) but the my.settings.connectionstrings seem to be readonly.

Changing Or Updating App.config At Runtime In Wpf Projects?

Nov 10, 2011

How do we overwrite config file at runtime. I have four config files for DEV, TEST, UAT, PROD. Based on user selection I need to overwrite the default config file completely with one of the selection specific config files. These config files not only have appsettings section, but also has complex cutom sections and subelements with lot of attributes. I need to overwrite and refreshsections dynamically at runtime. I know there are so many articles on editing appsettings sections. But I want to completely overwrite the entire file.

.net 1.1 - Start-up Window Changes Based On App.config Setting - Changing ?

Feb 24, 2009

I have this VB.Net 1.1 project that I have to make some changes to. There is a flag in the App.config file. If it is false, the page just loads a splash screen and runs the program normally. If it is true it first opens a login window. VB.Net is not something I've ever worked with before. I can't for the life of me figure out where the logic for the picking the startup object is. In the property pages, Main.vb is always set as the startup object, but that's not even the window that loads up when the flag is false, it always comes after the splash screen.

Does Windows Service Need To Be Rebuild After Changing Config File

Aug 1, 2010

I changed config file of the windows many times. Before changing config file I stopped the service and after changing config file, started again. Every thing worked fine.

But last time when I made some changes in config file of the windows service and started it - It didnt worked, I even tried reinstalling the service but in vain.

As a last resort I rebuild the service with new config file and copied newly build files on the server and installed the service. To my surprise the Windows service worked perfectly this time. But I have only made changes to config file and the code of the windows service was untouched. My question is, do we need to rebuild the Window service if we change the config file many time?

IDE :: Error When Changing "app.config" Build Action

Apr 20, 2011

recently i have been working on a desktop project, and i made couple of changes to the project, one of them was changing the build action for the App.config to "Embedded Resource" by mistake! after that i built the application and no compile errors were shown, so i tried to run it but the following run time error showed up:

{"An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: The URL cannot be empty. Parameter name: url"}

but it did not specify more information about the exact cause or the exact error place. so it will leave you in a miss!

for awhile, i did not know what was the cause of this due to the numerous changes i did, so i started to review my latest changes one by one till i discovered that changing the build action for the App.config file was the reason for this error.

Set The Viewable Area To A Smaller Screen Area?

Jun 11, 2012

Trying to set the viewable area to a smaller screen area and have it cycle through as the person moves using collision detection to move the backgroudn image. Here is the start but its off to a bad start so far.

Public Class Form1
Dim Mapx As Integer = 600
Dim Mapy As Integer = 2000

[code]....

Basically the forum size is set to 600x2000 but the client should only allow you to view 600x600. I want it to add +1 once you "collide with a invisable box I'll add and this will redraw the screen.

Our main application has both a asp.net and winforms component. There is a class that is used by both sides and needs info from either the web.config or app.config files. The class itself does not know if it's on the client side or on the web server (at this point). We are getting errors when it's attempting read app.config when it's on the web side. Is there a way for the class to tell if it needs to read web.config or app.config?

Where To Place ConnectionString In DA

Jan 6, 2011

I designed a DAL (data access layer). This DAL mainly consists of a handfull of methods to call stored procedures. All methods are shared. So no instance generation of the DAL class occurs.

The DAL with it's single class is located in an own project. The connection string is defined in the app-config file of this project.

I want other applications to use the DAL class by referencing the dll generated by the DAL-project. For this reason, I can not any longer define the connection string in the DAL app-config as it is, because the client application determines which database needs to be used.

- Dropping the "shared" keyword of my methods. Create an instance of the DAL class. Add a property for the connection string. When application starts, create one global or multiple local instance/s of the DAL and set it's connection string property.

Comment: I don't like this, because it implies more coding work on the application code side (create instance of class, assign connection string)

- Granting the DAC class access to the connection string defined in the application code by adding a connection string property inside the application code. Thus the DAC class remains "shared".

Comment: I'd need to set a reference from the DAL to the application code during without knowing the application yet. I could try stack tracing or something like that. But it feels to convoluted for me.

ConnectionString In Class Library

Apr 27, 2011

I'm merging two of my projects that can share a lot of the same classes into one solution with two web applications and a shared class library.

I've literally just dumped all the classes into the class library project and as expected I've got a ton of errors to fix. My main problem at the moment is the connection string. Currently I have this (which is obviously not going to work):

''' <summary>
''' Initialise the data access layer by loading the database connection string from the Web.Config file

.net - ConnectionString Property Has Not Been Initialized?

Jul 15, 2009

I've looked at a lot of posts on different forums where others have received the same error. Most say they were not referencing the connectionstring from the web.config file correctly, or they were trying to open the connection before setting the connectionstring. Well, if that were the case for me, then how does it work on two different systems, but not on the third? It works on my development PC and on the development server, but not in the production environment. The difference is the web and DB server are separate physical servers in my production environment and on a single server for development. My setup, error message and code will be listed below.

I can simulate the error on my PC if I rename the connection string in either section of the web.config file (appsettings, connectionstrings) to something else. You will see how I have tested both below.
