Checking An Object's Class By String?

how find an object's type when it is a subclass of another object and I only know the string value of the object's type's name.
I created the follwing classes:
Public Class word
End Class
Public Class noun
[Code]...
Using 'TypeOf', I correctly see that pn is a properNoun, a noun and a word. The problem is, using 'GetType' to check pn against a string value, I can only see that pn is a properNoun, not that its parent classes are noun and word.
Is there a way to check pn against the string value "noun" or "word" and get back a positive result, indicating that pn is indeed a noun and a word as well as a properNoun?

I have two user controls that need to add a class atribute to the body tag of my page, however they currently over write one another if I just use Body.Attributes.Add("class","value") So I need to check if the class attribute exsists and if it already contains the value Im going to add.

EDIT: The contain constraint doesnt return the expected value, resulting the the class not been concatinated, Example: add class "dog" then I a different instance of the same control tries to add "dog" but the contains("dog") returns false

I am somewhat new to object oriented programming and am attempting to flatten a Linq object hierarchy by using a shim class.how to initalize a derived class with property values from a base class?I have two objects, a base object with about 100 properties, and a derived object which inherits from the base object and adds a few additional properties beyond those of the base object. My simple constructor creates the derived object, but I am looking for a way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object.Right now I am using reflection to iterate over the properties individually and I suspect there may be a better way. The following example shows my shim class constructor for the derived class, and two properties:
newProperty1 - a new string property of the derived class
flattenedProperty2 - a new string property of the derived class, copied from a 2nd-level object of the base class

Is this the correct constructor approach to flatten the object hierarchy using a shim class? My second question relates to initialization of properties in the derived class. The constructor above creates the derived object, but what is the best way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object? In my application i have set a reference to an activeX component that has been written in vb6(that's not important) What i have done is Here (woo my first hyperlink i hope it works lol) But this is neither here nor there, what i would like to do is put a check to see if the object that has been assigned the activeX component has been assigned it. What i can think of is:If myObject Is Not Nothing Then'set some other stuff End If
The only trouble is, obviously i have an error. Over the Not Nothing I have the following error: 'Is' requires operands that have reference types, but this operand has the value type 'Integer'.Is the type 'Integer' at the end there refering to the Nothing being an integer -1 or 0 and i'm not sure how i would reference the type active x.my question: How can i check if the activeX component is an activeX component and not a whisp of thin air/nothing.

I have a hashset (of posdata), pos data containing a boolean and a label containing the hashkey. I need to draw up a condtion where it will check that if a boolean for two or three different records does not equal to false. I have some classes, BsfciFile and StudyFlashCard. Bsfci is the extension to which I save my set of flashcards in an INI format. I am currently working to transform my code from using Windows API calls to access the INI to using a IniFile class that I found on the internet. I would like the BsfciFile to have a Array of StudyFlashCard objects, but I would like the StudyFlashCard class to use the IniFile class object contained in the BsfciFile class. I can pass the IniFile from the BsfciFile class to the constructor for the StudyFlashCard class, but I want it to modify the same IniFile as the BsfciFile class has later on.

I wanted to make a collection of definitions public, for which the Enum class was a perfect candidate, but I also had the need to check variables against all the possibile enum members to see which one they were.
In this scenario my solution was to write a public enum class in which all the members were made available, and replicate the same listing in an array in order to iterate through.
In fact the only way I know to iterate through all memebers is a cycle (either "for each" or "while somecondition" and a moving index). But I guess there must be a simpler way to make use of an enum class.

i've created bunch of classes. i have webservices which reference these classes and contains the classes as parameters and return objects.when i call the weservice, i have to convert the class to the webservice object else i can type conversion error.is there a generic way to convert between these types without having to assign the values by hand?
for example

fname as string
lname as string
end class

i would liek ot be able to call the web service and return the data type back and have a generic coversion instead of as above in stead of:

I have a class in which some of the fields are also classes.
I can put values in the "normal" properties, but in the others when o try to assign values it gives the: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"
But the code compiles fine.

If we are within the derived class then ofcource we can use MyBase keyword to access base class's object reference . That's fine , how can we take that base class's object reference outside that derived class's definition.My following code will explain what i want . The code below works for the class that I hard coded "XCCustomers" in my RetrieveIDandName method where I use CType. However, I would like to be able to pass in various classes and property names to get the integer and string LIST returned. For example, in my code below, I would like to also pass in "XCEmployees" to my RetrieveIDandName method. I feel so close... I was hoping someone knew how to use CType where I can pass in the class name as a string variable.
Note, all the other examples I have seen and tried fail because we are using Option Strict On which disallows late binding. That is why I need to use CType.I also studied the "Activator.CreateInstance" code examples to try to get the class reference instance by string name but I was unable to get CType to work with that.When I use obj.GetType.Name or obj.GetType.FullName in place of the "XCCustomers" in CType(obj, XCCustomers)(i)I get the error "Type 'obj.GetType.Name' is not defined" or "Type 'obj.GetType.FullName' is not defined"

I am developing an IT Asset Tracking application using VB 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express edition. Will I need to create classes to represent objects such as Computers, Printers, Scanners/Faxes, Contracts, Purchase Orders etc or are there any other approaches.For example, if I am correct, I will have a class called Computer and its properties will include Make,Model,CPU,Hard Disk,Memory etc. Is this the right approach.
Computers can be split up into Desktop PC's, Servers and Notebooks. Would I have to create separate classes for these as well or would they be ok under the Computer class.Once I create an object from the class, how can I use the object to interact with the SQL db.I am a beginner to VB.NET 2005 therefore I am slowly getting to grips with OOP.

I am trying to figure out how to check a string can contain a certain value.In the begining I had a checkbox and wanted to hide a ceratin field depending upon which checkboxes were selected.The problem with this is that the value is always = to the first value.
I got around this by writing these values into a hidden textBox and using a loop.So now I have a textbox and if the user selected the 1st and 3rd choice the textBox would = "AC" If they selected all choices it would = ABCD etc...How can I determine if the values in my textBox contains just letter 'B' ?

debugger returns "input string was not in a correct format"
i thought that the double parse would convert the string into a double format of "0.0" but it gives me an error.
