Connection String In A Application
May 2, 2012
I used to work only with asp.net websites before. I know that in ASP.NET website, the connection string is found in the web.config file. My problem is now I have started working with VB.NET applications which needed to be interfaced to a database. How is a connection string created and where should I put it?

I'm trying to give my users the option to move their database to a different location, currently the datasource is set as an (Application Connection String) in the Project Settings, I know that when the scope is set to "Application" it cannot be modified but I'd like to know if there's a way for me to edit the location through code of my database in the application settings without crashing the program, can this be done? The purpose is to give whoever uses my application the freedom to choose where the database should be.

I am trying to understand how a connection string obtains its value in a vb.net 2008 application. By stepping through code,I found that a connection string obtained its value from the following line of code:
RemotingConfiguration.Configure("Useall.Desktop.exe.config", false);
By doing a search on the .net application, I found the Useall.Desktop.exe.config file in the bin/debug folder of the application.Thus I am wondering if the connection string information is initally obtained from the Useall.Desktop.exe.config file or would it obtain its inital values from an app.debug.config file?Would you explain the .net remoting and configuration manager interdependency to me? If they are separate items?

I'm using vs2010 and can't get this to work. The same code has worked in earlier versions. What has changed?
config file:
<appSettings>
<add key="ConnectionString" value="Data Source=MikeLaptop;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorksDW2008R2;Integrated Security=True"/>
</appSettings>
Code:
Dim strProvider As String = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("ConnectionString")
strProvider is always = nothing
How to do this now?

Does anyone know how to store the connection string in a file rather than hard coding it in the application. For example i have declared this connection string in the form to connect to oracle database and it works. But i assume this is not the right way to go by if one is looking for more secured environment.
strcon = "Provider=MSDASQL;" & _
"Driver={Microsoft ODBC for Oracle}; " & _
"CONNECTSTRING=(DESCRIPTION=" & _

You can change the connection string at run-time like this. You make the connection string setting available for writing as a separate property inside the MySettings class:
Partial Friend NotInheritable Class MySettings
Public WriteOnly Property RunTimeConnectionString()
Set(ByVal value)
[code]....
Then, in some place when the application is being initialized (before using any table adapters of typed datasets), write something like:
My.Settings.RunTimeConnectionString = My.Settings.ProductionConnectionString
Where ProductionConnectionString is a simple String setting. It is a User Scope setting so every user can change it (by assigning a value to it, similar to the code above) and save it by calling My.Settings.Save()This code works well for connection strings which were initially created in the main project and stored in it's settings (= app.config file).
The connection string in the app.config actually has a longer name: MyApp.MySettings.MyConnectionString.When you have a connection string stored in the app.config in a class library project, and reference that project in the main project, the app.config files will somehow be merged, so the class library has it's settings.The thing that don't know how to do, is change a setting from the class library at run-time. I could copy the connection string setting from the class library to the main project's app.config. I must keep the same name, which looks something like: MyClassLibrary.My.MySettings.MyConnectionString.Can the same principle I showed above be somehow applied to this second connection string?

Ok I have a question about connection string in vb.net. Im using the string [Code] but here I am specifying the serverName by its name, now if I deploy my application and send it to another person to use it I see that server name is changing according to the name of the computer. Is there any way where by I can make my application to detect itself the Name of the server present in that computer and use it in connection string?

I have a little problem with application setting in VB.net 2008. I want to switch main server and backup server connection string with combobox. [Code] It did change the Application Setting connection string in the main form when combobox1 was changed. But the problem comes, when child form was called. On the child form there is DataGridView with Dataset using application connection string. Even the Backupserver was selected on the main form, child form dataset connection string doesn't change. I don't know how to pass the current connection string to child form dataset although it is set to use application setting.

I understand the possibilities for encrypting a connection string in .net v4. I have a win forms application that will be used by multiple people on different machines. I understand that I need to protect the connection string at time of the app being first run on the target machine. However I am concerned that for a period of time my connection string will be unencrypted. I am looking for advice in how to deploy my app with the connection string already encrypted or encrypted during installation. encrypting the connection string in a secure way?

I'm developing an app in vb.net (visual studio 2008). I have a Teradata back-end that will be supporting multiple users in a production environment. I need to use variables in the connection string as the user/pass will be changed every 3 months.
For the gist of the application:
In it's most basic form - I have a search form which works correctly - it pulls results into a listbox and the user then double clicks the list box which will then open a form that is bound via table adapter to the back-end table (Teradata). My connection string is fine everywhere in the application. My problem is using a modified connection string for the "fill" function of the table adapter once the form is opened.
I'm using the code below for the on-load event and keep getting an "invalid connection string" - again, the connection string works fine everywhere else in the app, and the variables etc... are working correctly.
Private Sub adaptertest_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim DBConnStr As String = "Provider=TDOLEDB;Data Source=TDDEV;Persist Security
[Code].....

SQL connection - I planned to create one sql connection object inside my own singleton class (say connectionmanager with Reference counting for 'SQL connection object' which is a member of the class) and open/close the connection whenever needed. As I like to give high importance for performance. And my application is a desktop based application accessing a remote database server (SQL server 2008), and will use only one connection string, 50 concurrent desktop users may access db server. Please advice.
As like many articles say if the answer is "Connection pooling is taken care by ado.net" - Does that mean that scope of connection pool is entire life of Application instance? Or is it in the scope of SQLConnection object?

I am developing a software which will connect to a SQL SERVER situated at Head Quarters over a VPN connection.But for times when VPN is disconnected I want my applications at the branches to connect to a local Sql Server installed at a local server.Now all the applications at each of the local machines have their connectionstring stored in their App.config file.When the VPN is disconnected we have to change each of the connection strings on all the applications in each machine. Is there a way to do it automatically switch the connection string depending on whether the Server is reachable or not, and to store the connectionstring at centralised location.

I'm trying to change my connection string to w/e the user wants. After a few tips here and there, this is what I've come up:
1: In my settings I've added - Name(login), Type(String), Scope(User), Value(Nothing)
2: Here is the code I'm using
Private Sub LoginForm1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
'Here I'm checking if the login in my.settings is there
'If not, I'm going to let the user choose what database
[code]....
The error I get is: Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0.here -
Dim con As New OleDbConnection(My.Settings.login)
When I have my con equal to when I added the datasource from it works.
