View 4 RepliesI'm trying to put sub-child values from XML into a dictionary collection using LINQ. I've done this with lists and custom collections which follow the same structure as the XML but am unable to search for specific values. If I know parentName, childName, and subChildName I want to be able to find subChildProperty1.value and subChildProperty2.value without iterating through the entire collection and each of the subsequent sub-collections, as I have to do with lists. This may not be the best implementation, and am open to suggestions, but still would like to figure out how to make this work.[code]...

In VB.NET, how can I convert the following string into some kind of key/value type such as a Hashtable, Dictionary, etc?"Name=Fred;Birthday=19-June-1906;ID=12345".I want to extract Birthday or ID without having to split the string into an array.I'd prefer not to split the string into an array in case the format of the string changes later.I don't have control over the string. What if someone switches the order around or adds another element?
View 6 RepliesI want to group items from a linq query under a header, so that for each header I have a list of objects that match the header title. I assumed the solution would be to use ToDictionary to convert the objects, but this allows only one object per "group" (or dictionary key). I assumed I could create the dictionary of type (String, List Of()), but I can't figure out how to write it. As an example I have written a simplified version below.

I have created a class with a function in it. I have a collection of data I want to pass back. I tried an arraylist first. Now I am trying to use a dictionary. My problem is that it creates the dictionary ok, but I am only get the last row of data from my

I have the following object:
countDictionary As Dictionary(of Category, Dictionary(of Date, Integer))
The Class has a Enumeration Property. For the purposes of demonstration, I'll call it MasterCategory.I have been trying to get out an object that looks like the following:
groupedCountDictionary As Dictionary(of MasterCategory, Dictionary(of Date, Integer)
The best result I could get was:
Lookup(of MasterCategory, Dictionary(of Date, Integer))
From:
countDictionary.ToLookup(Function(o) o.Key.MasterCategory, Function(o) o.Value)
Which results in a IEnumerable (Of Dictionary(of Date, Integer)) for each MasterCategory value. However, I need that IEnumerable of Dictionary flattened to one dictionary with all the integers summed (total counts) for each date. I then tried to use various selects and group bys (from numerous stackoverflow posts) to "flatten" it, but my efforts have fallen short.
Current Code
[Category Class]
- MasterCategory As Enum
- Name As String etc

Is there any way to do the same in VB.NET?[code]...

View 1 RepliesI am trying to convert my EnumerableRowCollection into a DataTable, but I can't see the CopyToDataTable method. The enm.CopyToDataTable() has the blue saw tooth line under it with error saying " 'CopyToDataTable' is not a member of 'System.Data.EnumerableRowCollection' ". I have set a Reference to System.Data, System.Data.Linq, and System.Data.DataSetExtensions. I thought the CopyToDataTable method was part of the System.Data.DataSetExtensions, right? Anyone know why I can't access this method?

I have a C# example that is populating a multiselect combobox. This was from an example found online. It works fine with the static values coming from the observable collection. I want to change this to be database driven from a SQL Server backend, but was having issues. I did get it to populate the combobox, but the selection is acting kind of screwy. Some type of simple query from a Northwind table would suffice such as: "Select CategoryName from Categories".

I have created a Dictionary class (MyDictionary for the example). I am currently trying to pass MyDictionary into a function, filter it into a new instance of MyDictionary and pass this new instance into another method. When I am attempting to create the second instance from the filtered first instance of MyDictionary via Lambda Expressions and the ToDictionary Method, I am getting the following error:
Unable to cast object of type 'System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2[System.Int32,System.String]' to type 'MyDictionary'. I have simplified the example and recreated it in LINQPad and am getting the same error.
Here's the simplified version of my code:

View 3 RepliesI currently have an excel spreadsheet that has a macro that displays information from my sql server. Everything works fine with it. Im trying to embed that into my vb project though. Anyone know what the best route to go would be to do this. Should I try to convert the vba macro and display the results to a dataset?Or should I try to recreate the connection through VB to display the results? or is that sort of the same thing? Or should I try something different? [Code]

I'm using Visual Studio 2005 Team System For Software Developers. When I try to add a new DataSet to any kind of project, I cannot get to the visual DataSet designer. View 3 RepliesI have a few questions reguarding converting a Access program to a sql/vb.net program. I know these are vague questions, so feel free to give vague answers.
NOTES: I have a solid unstranding of SQL and VB.net. i have little Access experience, but i would be working with the individual who created the access program. I also don't have alot of experience in converting on program from one language to another. Most of my experience is in new programing.
[Q1] Is their a general rule of thumb when converting/recodeing on how long it should take? i.e. if this project would take me 40 hours to write my self from scratch it would take me 30 hours to recode into another language?
[Q2] What type of problems do i need to look out for when working on projects of this nature and being inexperinced?
I have developed some programs for processing and issue-coding electronic documents. I am teaching myself how to work with SQL Server because I want these programs to work with electronic documents imported into SQL Server as opposed to messing around in a folder stuck on the desktop, for example. From there I want to expand on the program so that it is a network enabled program.

I'm working on a punch-card type program and I'm designing a password change form, so that employees can set their password whenever they first log in, or whenever their password is reset.
The Program works like this: (Code to follow)
1) User starts application
2) User types in their username, and then enters their username as the password. (first time the program is ever run.)
3) The password change form appears, and they enter their desired password in two text fields and clicks OK.
4) The punch-clock form appears, and they begin using it like normal.
The problem I'm having is that at the end of step 3, the program updates an access database, changing the row with the correct username to have the new password. The password in the database changes, like it should, but when the application is exited and then started again, it acts as if the username is still the password.
Below is the code I'm using for the Login Form, the bottom section is a user class that I built just to hold username and password for the logged in user.
Public Class LoginForm
'Creates a new object to house the logged in user's information
Public persona As New User
