Counting The Specific Characters?

I would like to know how to count specific characters for a proper split value so I can seperate the name of the file from the rest of this address:
C:\Program Files\Folder\Folder\File.file
The reason is so I can combine it with other addresses taken in my code to cuase a proper copy command using the File.Copy with import IO The character I am trying to count is: \ This is so when I command the split, I can choose the split number (starts at 0) so if there are 4 of the "\" characters, then I would subtract one from this number, and use it as the Split index so I can capture the split data at: File.file

Ok, so I have a string called item. It's value is "Coffe`". When I try to get the number of caractors by using:
textcount = item.length
However it returns with the value "5". even though there is 6 caracters.

How can I Count the Characters in a DataTabel Field before that Field is DataBound to any TextBox. I thought of using a Variabel, something like this:

I have one dimensional array that is being returned by an NVP function, the problem is that I want to count the number of ID's returned by the array to set the limit. For instance the array comes in this format ID0, ID1, ID3.... IDn, Name0, Name1, ...., Namen, Surname0, surname1, ...., surnamen etc... I want to know the n+1 number of ID's so that I can set it as the upper limit of my array to be able to loop through without setting an arbitrary number.

I have a text file stored as a string variable. The text file is processed so that it only contains lowercase words and spaces. Now, say I have a static dictionary, which is just a list of specific words, and I want to count, from within the text file, the frequency of each word in the dictionary. For example:
Text file:
i love love vb development although i m a total newbie
Dictionary:
love, development, fire, stone
The output I'd like to see is something like the following, listing both the dictionary word and its count. If it makes coding simpler, it can also only list the dictionary word that appeared in the text.
WORD, COUNT
love, 2
development, 1
fire, 0
stone, 0
Using a regex (eg "w+") I can get all the word matches, but I have no clue how to get the counts that are also in the dictionary, so I'm stuck. Efficiency is crucial here since the dictionary is quite large (~100,000 words) and the text files are not small either (~200kb each).

I have an HTML string and in that string are certain variables that I need to replace with database values. The variable names are dynamic but all begin with the characters "@@" (just two ampersands, no quotes). Is there a way to get all the words in a string that start with "@@"? I'm assuming you would use regular expressions, but not sure how to begin.

I have a form with four checkboxs and a textbox for an id number.I also have two tables in a database. The first has a column for the users Id, Name, and a column called Points.The second has a column for Id and one called Letters.What i want to do is, after the user enters the id number, and the user clicks checkboxA it should add a certain number, lets say 5, to the "points" cell for that id#(in the first database), and it should put the letter "a" in the "letters" column (of the second database) for that id number. Also, if a user deselects a checkbox it should remove the "a" from letters and subtract 5 from points.Also there will be different letters in the "letters" cell, so i cant just clear it, but i have to remove the specific letter.

for example if a person types in multiple characters that represent a certain image in the input box for example if i type "tom" in the input box each letter represents a different image. Can i display those 3 images on the form somewhere? this is what i have so far...

I'm having a problem recently, a logical issue so hard to determine various examples.I need the text that is inserted in textbox, which has been altered or modified or twisted to have a proper format through line accordance and constant white spaces etc. And some cases I stuck at defining the If statement within the loop. Essentially I am trying to replicate the Windows 7 (In-Windows) activation key TextBox form. The Form where it will auto capitalize letters, remove or deny all non alphanumeric characters except dashes every 5 characters that will be auto-input.I assume this can be done with a fairly complicated replacement Regular Expression but I cannot seem to create one to fit the needs.
This is an Example of what I have right now, but it creates an infinite loop as it removes all characters including dashes, than adds a dash, which changes the text and removes the dash again.

Not sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:
GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"
....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days.So, I now have to change the code to:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) Then
If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then
Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

I have two textboxes. I type in one of them and the text gets copied in real time into another textbox. There is one catch. I need to replace specific character with something else.
If I enter a quote " in textbox1, it has to be replaced with " in textbox2.

With the shape of really large characters such as numbers and alphabetic characters + others, is there a way to get that shape as a REGION please?Imagine a really fat snake forming the letter S or two rectangles placed together to form a large letter L or a T like the shapes in TETRIS.
1) Does anyone know of anything in VB.Net that can translate such shapes into a System. Drawing.Region or know of a project elsewhere that achieves this please?
2) While I'm on the subject, how would you SCALE UP / DOWN a System.Drawing.Region please? How would you work out the Transform Matrix required please?

I'm making an application that will change position of two characters in Word.

Program works good, it is mixing characters good, but it doesn't write text to the file. It will write text in console, but not in file. Note: Program is working only with words that are divisible by 2, but it's not a problem. Also, it does not return any error message.

I'm making a custom control suited for handling passwords. I have created a control that inherits from a text box and I have implemented a lot of things so far. But what i want to do now is create a system so that when a user types It will display his last character typed for a X amount of time. Is there a way to turn only selected characters into password characters and still be able to get the password text from the Text property ?

example. i have 2 textboxes and if there empty it says "Incorrect Information", but how do i make it that like when a person enters something into the textbox1 it can be 3 values minimum.. like it could be eather 2 letters 1 number or what ever just more than 3 values (no special characters), and on the password.. 6 values minimum (no special characters).

So I have an ASP.Net (vb.net) application. It has a textbox and the user is pasting text from Microsoft Word into it. So things like the long dash (charcode 150) are coming through as input. Other examples would be the smart quotes or accented characters. In my app I'm encoding them in xml and passing that to the database as an xml parameter to a sql stored procedure. It gets inserted in the database just as the user entered it.
The problem is the app that reads this data doesn't like these characters. So I need to translate them into the lower ascii (7bit I think) character set. How do I do that? How do I determine what encoding they are in so I can do something like the following. And would just requesting the ASCII equivalent translate them intelligently or do I have to write some code for that?
Also maybe it might be easier to solve this problem in the web page to begin with. When you copy the selection of characters from Word it puts several formats in the clipboard. The straight text one is the one I want. Is there a way to have the html textbox get that text when the user pastes into it? Do I have to set the encoding of the web page somehow?

I have a simple form with Start/Stop buttons and a textbox that shows a ctr. When you click the Start button it loops to displays an incrementing ctr in the textbox. Can't seem to figure out how to get the Stop button to work while the ctr is being displayed. I've tried putting the loop in BackgroundWorker and Delegates too with no luck. Is bindingsource.count only used to give the total items in a list? I'm trying to prepare data for a pie chart, and need to count the instances of different items in a column (If there's a way that the Chart will do this itself, I've not been able to find it, it seems to need linked items and values). The bindingsource is already filtered and would prefer not to combine filters.Would it be best to loop through the rows of the column and count them 'manually' or is there a quicker way of doing this?Put it in a datagridview? Is it possible to use Aggregate Count on a bindingsource?

I'm trying to create an application similar to the site WhatPulse, which will generate an image with my clicks and keystrokes. WhatPulse only updates the image once every 24 hours, so I am going to make an application to keep track of that for me, only with realtime stats.
How can I count total keystrokes (outside of the application itself) as well as total clicks, in vb.net?
