View 1 RepliesI need an example of how to create and use a random access file
View 3 Repliesi not sure can it be done.
Using VB.net by typing the name and hit the button to Show the person record from the database access.
the log file will pop out and show the person record in VB.Net
Created Structure
opened file using FileOpen(1, "filename.dat", OpenMode.Random, , , bytes in structure)
used structure .ID = record number
FilePut(1, structure)
FileClose(1)
The program enters the first record but although when I enter more records it still shows only one record in the file.

Im trying to write to a file I created and place "Unregistered" in it. Thought it would be a simple task but keep getting an error. Its happening when I try and open the file to write. This is the error: Access to the path 'G:\Projects\Project\pbss\bin\Debug\5\pbssv\Data.DB' is denied.
Ive tried adding the file attributes to read-write and still get the same. Most of the code ive looked at via a google search points to the same as ive got for the Added default value area. Im not sure if there is a conflict between the 2 different ways im accessing the file when creating and writing too? [Code]
An OLE Object column contains images but the image type (jpg/gif/tiff) is unknown. These images need to be extracted from the DB and saved to disk. The application is primarily using VB.NET but C# examples are welcome too.
View 3 Replies1. I have to create a file. 2. Then I want to write a string into the text file.
I can do part 1 no problem with: File.Create(strFilePath) But when I try part 2 to write to the file it won't allow this as it's still being used:
sw = File.AppendText(strFileName)
sw.WriteLine(strCode)
sw.Flush()
sw.Close()
My code in part 2 works fine on a file that hasn't just been created.
How do I release the file from the File object?
There doesn't seem to be a .close or .flush option.
I wrote an application which parses a website and downloads an mp4 file from website. User can select the path where he wants to download the video. When I try to download I get an exception for the file, Access Denied to Path. When I gave the permissions to folder that I chose, then works fine. How can I resolve that problem? End-User will select the folder. How do I change the permissions?

View 6 RepliesI have used VB (versions 2 - 6) through many years; however, I am crash-course training myself into the VB2008 / VB2010 world kicking a screaming. I would like suggestions as to what SQL database access method should I focus more on in my learning process without making me feel that I'm a million years behind. I know I have WinForms where I can create a datasourse and drag / drop fields or tables on a form to create a grid (not really what I'm looking for).
My trouble isn't so much designing the form but in how I access the database. Theres XML, LINQ to SQL, ADO.NET, and many other methods. Not only do I need to grasp these methods quickly but I also need to know what type of projects I should create. What I mean is...I was thinking that I would design a WinForm app; however, I see that there are WPF apps and others to chose from. This is getting deep. I know it depends on the project that I'm working on. My plans are to write an app based off of either an SQL Express 2008 or SQL Server 2008 database. This first app will be standalone for now but may later become multi-user. I know I'm far behind on my learning curve coming from VB6. I have read a bit on VB2005 / 2008 / 2010. I own
both VB2008 and VB2010. I use VB2008 at work. I know ADO.NET is still alive but by what I read online, it's a dying method and is only kept for backward compatibility. XML and LINQ to SQL and other methods are all pretty new to me.
I am writing a very simple program that connects to a accdb file (Microsoft Access 2007 file) and returns some results in a datagridview. Everything is fine. Now because we have to deploy this program in many computers i publish it so everyone we want can install it and have updates. What i wanted to do is to make the database file part of the program which i did it by adding it to the resources. My problem is that i do not know what connection string to enter in order to access it in my resources.
My previous connectionstring before i deploy it was this
ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=C:l.accdb;Persist Security Info=True
What should i change in the data source in order to access the same file in my resources?
I do one project in visual basic 2010.In visual basic 6 project can be make Package and deployment (setup file or install file) file using Package and deployment wizard.But in visual basic 2010 express edition does not have Package and deployment wizard.how to make Package and deployment (setup file or install file) file in visual basic 2010 project?
View 4 RepliesI am trying to create a log file which I am going to use to populate some controls (DataGridView or Treeview). I am trying to figure out if should use text files or XML files to do so. Effectively the log will highlight multiple phases in a client-side app. The log will be written to at various phases when the project is running. The user will always have the options move on to the next phase or save progress and exit the project. As such, I want the log file to highlight how far the user has progressed throught the various phases AND I want the log to highlight varous information from each phase. Whenever the user starts the project, they will be given the option to load existing log files. So the project will have to read these log files and append them where necessary as the user progresses.
I am not sure what the best way to do this is and below is a rudimentary approach using text files. As you can see, the top of the file would have a summary of all the phases and whether or not the user completed each phase. Next each phase would have a data section highlighting what data was stored along the way. I have used a ":" to denote each section. Then within each section I would obviously need to use a delimeter for all my data. So if Phase1 = True, then I would load all the pertinent data from "Phase1:" into the desired control. Can anyone provide an efficient way of doing this and provide some insight as to whether I should use XML instead. The phases my change during development and I am not sure yet which controls I will be using. Does XML provide more flexibility.
In summary I am looking to create, read/write and append log files and populate controls with the data in varous sections of the log file. Example:
Phase1 = True
Phase2 = True
Phase3 = False
Phase4 = False

I am writing a program to calculate Pi to several hundred billion decimal places and this will require lots of GB of memory. I wrote a test program in VB2008 that saved the first 16 digits of Pi (without the decimal point) to both a text file and a random access file, just to be sure it was outputting the numbers properly. For reference the first 16 digits of Pi are:
View 8 RepliesI have created a dll in VB using Visual Studio 2005 that uses System.Security.Cryptography to encrypt and decrypt a text string. My intention was to reference this from using VBA in MS Access in order to encrypt field values in a table and decrypt it when needed.
I can use this successfully from a simple VB application that I also wrote using Visual Studio 2003 but when I try to add the dll as a reference in MS Access I get the following error: "Can't add a reference to the specified file."How can I modify the code in my dll to make it compatible with VBA?

View 6 RepliesI need to create a .Net program that will access a webservice provided to me from a customer. I need to be able to call this .Net program from a VB6 program. Basically, this .Net program needs to be an in-between program between a VB6 program and a webservice.I'm not very knowledgeable about .Net so I am struggling to find a way to do this. When I search the internet I seem to find information on how to make a webservice. But, this is not what I need to do. I just need to be able to access a webservice provide to me and pass the data to a VB6 program.

How do you create an access database dynamically?
View 2 RepliesI need to make an application that from a master database creates a number of access database files (tables of a larger db), then these are manually given to users who fill in data, the database files are emailed back to a user who, through the application, combines them again.The only part of this that I am unsure about is problematically creating the access db's. I have read that through Microsoft Jet OLE DB Provider and Microsoft ADO Ext I can create them (the tables and data), but I also need forms.
