Oct 22, 2010I have used VB (versions 2 - 6) through many years; however, I am crash-course training myself into the VB2008 / VB2010 world kicking a screaming. I would like suggestions as to what SQL database access method should I focus more on in my learning process without making me feel that I'm a million years behind. I know I have WinForms where I can create a datasourse and drag / drop fields or tables on a form to create a grid (not really what I'm looking for).
My trouble isn't so much designing the form but in how I access the database. Theres XML, LINQ to SQL, ADO.NET, and many other methods. Not only do I need to grasp these methods quickly but I also need to know what type of projects I should create. What I mean is...I was thinking that I would design a WinForm app; however, I see that there are WPF apps and others to chose from. This is getting deep. I know it depends on the project that I'm working on. My plans are to write an app based off of either an SQL Express 2008 or SQL Server 2008 database. This first app will be standalone for now but may later become multi-user. I know I'm far behind on my learning curve coming from VB6. I have read a bit on VB2005 / 2008 / 2010. I own
both VB2008 and VB2010. I use VB2008 at work. I know ADO.NET is still alive but by what I read online, it's a dying method and is only kept for backward compatibility. XML and LINQ to SQL and other methods are all pretty new to me.

Oct 13, 2010Currently we are using a VB script macro created in word to create some fairly simple forms based off of data entered on a data entry form. I am very new to VB, and I have been able to create many applications using forms, but I have absolutely no history creating reports. I have been reading up on the reports, and it looks like they are designed to use with data sources like tables. I merely want to take either data from the entry form, or from data derived internaly from processing the user entered data and populate a defined report "form". I have been searching, but there is so much on printing reports, that I feel overwhelmed. I am not looking for the exact answer as much as a link or place to look for a sample for what I want to do.

When I try to download I get an exception for the file, Access Denied to Path. When I gave the permissions to folder that I chose, then works fine. How can I resolve that problem? Jun 21, 2010I have been using an Access Database with no problems, using a form (with a sub-form) to input all of the data. Recently the data on the sub-form is not saving to the tables/reports. I enter the data, save and close the form and re-open the record and it is not there. Previously I have been able to save all data using the form and have not altered the form.

I have the following issue: I have a vb.net web page that places data into an access database. If I leave one of the fieldS blank, (even though Access has a default value of '0' instead of null) when I click to view the results in another page, the page fails with an error.
"System.InvalidOperationException: The provider could not determine the String value. For example, the row was just created, the default for the String column was not available, and the consumer had not yet set a new String value. etc etc" IF I put any figure in the blank field, even if it's 0, the page functions and works. Baffling. So, the data input page really needs to check, 'if nothing has been entered, automatically append the database with 0. Nov 20, 2011I working on a program that I am trying to create a customer data form.Along with the form I have their vehicles related to that record.Now I have setup a dataset in the form.I am pulling data from the database, however when I enter a new record on the customer part the customerID is in the running order, everything seems to be working on in this table.But when I create a vehicle for this customer I have a running vehicle id.Example: I have in the database 4 customers.IDs 1,2,3,4 customer 1 has vehicle ID1,2.customer 5 has a car there 1st car but the database gives is a ID of 3.I want this customer to ID 1 for car one.My problem might be because it was set in the database as Unique Identifier.Maybe I should make the license plate the unique identifier.

Mar 10, 2009I am designing a form that will create a template of data that will later be loaded into another form.From a menu command "Create New Template" I will need to ask how many Fields will be needed for the new template in an input box. If the user would input say 10, then I need to generate 10 labels, 10 text boxes, & 10 combo boxes. Each group (label, Text Box & Combo Box) on its own row on the form.I also want create the data mapping for each of them at this time.Once I have achieved this then I will add a form that will lookup the template name, and row count given from the above form via the database and load the required rows of items for further data entry.
Since I will have a MAX row limit I thought about designing a form using a Table Layout panel with 25 Rows and 5 columns then doing some sort of .visible true/false for the layout panel row after the user input of row/field quantities.Another question is resizing the form around only the visible rows.

Take Data User Has Input On Form And Put It Into Access 2007?
Mar 11, 2010i have a access database with two tables, one for customer and one for booking.
I then have a form application i made in VS 2008 which lets a user enter details such as their name phone number ect into text boxes.
All of the information the person enters thoughout the program is shown via labels at the end, all on one form.
Would it be possible to then have a button that when clicked saves all of this information into the access tables into the correct columns, im sure it must be possible i just don't really know where to start.
