View 2 RepliesIn VB6, my program simply compile to a nice simple .exe file.
However, with vb.net there are things like whatever.vshost.exe, for example.
Then there is AxInterop.MSWinsockLib.dll and so on. Should I upload that into the directory of my customer?
I am trying to create a file association in my program, which requires me to create some keys in the registry. However, when I try to create the keys, I get a System.UnauthorizedAccessException.
I have tried searching for a solution, and the only thing I can find is various examples of passing a boolean value to request write access for the "OpenSubKey" method. My problem currently is not opening the key, it's creating it. I have tried several of the different overloads to no avail.
I am guessing that I will need to temporarily elevate the access of my app to create the registry key. What I don't want to do is permanently raise the access of my app just to accomodate this one, small function, which should only really be needed by the user one time in order to create the file association.
Here is my code in progress:
Private Sub chkSOPAssociation_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles chkSOPAssociation.Click
If chkSOPAssociation.Checked = True Then
[Code]....
I have a checkbox on my form. When the user clicks it, it sets the file association if the checkbox is checked, or else it deletes the association if the checkbox is unchecked.
I want to create a program in vb .net that let me know who is using a specific file? Because I often update an .exe file but if it's in use I can't overwrite it. So if I know who is using the .exe I can call him to tell him o close the app.
View 1 RepliesI was thinking about creating a program that creates an .exe file. (I know that that is very difficult but I have 3 days that I'm not sleeping because i'm thinkin about it)The program should create the .exe file on button clickThe created exe should be in Normal Windows State, it should have only a button that doesn't do anything and it's path should be C:UsersAdministratorDesktop
View 4 RepliesHow would one go about associating a file type with his application? I know how to read the command line arguments but I am not sure how I can "register" the file extension with Windows. Furthermore, my application is a stand-alone executable, so how would I keep Windows up-to-date on the location of my program?
I did a fair amount of searching and all I could find were old articles that didn't explain everything. How can I create file associations to a stand-alone executable in VB.NET?
how to create a own project file in my program?
Like my filetype is "*.test" and if i open it with my program my listview and other things will load info.

I also need help creating a text box, that will submit information to another source (like echoing to a command prompt window). I'm trying to add a killtask option where the user can enter the name of the tast (such as notepad.exe) and press 'Submit'. The button will then send a code (killtask -f notepad.exe) to a command prompt window.

I found one solution that , if change user rights manually then this problem solved.Follow these step to change your account settings.Control Panel-->User Accounts and Family Safety-->User Accounts-->Change User Account Control settings-->Never notify(Set tab to never notify). After this change need to restart system. Now can make all changes like windows XP into Windows 7.can also make changes into program files.
Its working fine, but need to make these changes manually in OS.but its not efficent solution. So if any one knows how can make these changes by coding that will nice.

View 1 RepliesIm learning Visual Basic 2010 on my programming class and we reached the part of file handling. Here i tried to make a simple program that can create a text file with the content of what i type on the textbox, basically i create the file if it doesn't exist, and if it already exists i append the content to it. Once the file is saved i can read it using the "Open" button. Unfortunataly, whenever i try to create the file, the compiler gives me an error saying that it cannot modify a closed file, although i've followed up the execution instruction by instruction and i can't find the error.
Imports System.IO

Dim body As String

I am attempting to have my program select a file, create DataTables and then perform some other functions. I want to be able to open another file and re-do the same steps. The problem I am having is that I add columns to my Datatables and when I try and to open another file while one is already open I get a message that a column of xyz is already added how do I properly "clear my datatable" or perhaps that isnt even the correct approach? Here is the code I have that Opens a File
HTML
Private Sub OpenToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles OpenToolStripMenuItem.Click
[code]....
This was working at one time but after adding to my project I must have placed something in the wrong place inadvertantly or it has soemthing to do with adding columns,?

View 7 RepliesTo create a program that asks for input then uses an else statement to create a handling fee balance.
Input: sales record - first name, last name, purchase amount, balance before purchase
Output: report - full name, old balance, purchase amount, handling fee, new balance
Definitions: handling fee is 5% of the old balance if the old balance is less than $1000.00 else it is 2% new balance = old balance + purchase + handling fee
Processing:
Ask for and receive sales information
Calculate new balance
Print output report
End the program when a purchase amount of 9999.99 is entered
I have a program that outputs a file. I want the user to be able to just double-click the output file and launch the program, just like Word and Excel. In Word for instance, one doesn't necessarily have to open WORD then click on File--> Open and locate another Word doc. He can just go to the folder and open the Word doc. I want to implement the exact scenario in my program.
So far I have tried creating TextFile and added it to the Resources. On FormLoading, I simply I stream-read the Resouce file, but I can't write to the Resource on FormClosing, since the Resource is ReadOnly. Also, the Resource is built & compiled so I suppose you can't add anything to it at run time. How you lunch an output file without launching the Executable program that created it?

View 20 RepliesI am very very new to VB.NET and would like to ask a simple question. I want to create a vb.net program and allow visitors to a website to download this program. However, I prefer not to have visitors download a zip folder. I would like to have a program that just gives a prompt to save in a selected folder, once the saved file is selected it prompts the person to download, and then when finished prompts the person to run the program. The reason is twofold:
1. I don't like the extra step involved with unzipping the file. and 2. I don't like the visitors having to look for the "main" file program within the new downloaded folder. So is there any way to have just one file for others to download without having it in a zip folder?
I'm trying to create a program that installs required .dll's for a program due to a clean install..What I need to do is Get a value in the registry and use it for the program files path.. but I've noticed some pc's don't have the same configuration because of the version the user is using. Anyway This is what I have so far:[code].....
What I'm trying to do is find a registry key called "SoftInstallPath", if found I need the end of the path to goto the new directory(new_dll) not the old one (dll).. and if "SoftInstallPath" cannot be found.. I need it to find "ProgInstallPath" and use it instead and do the same thing.By the way I'm using Visual Studio Professional 2008 on a Vista x86 machine. Also error I keep getting is: Warning 10 Function 'FixPath' doesn't return a value on all code paths. A null reference exception could occur at run time when the result is used.
