VS 2008 Run A .exe File With Arguments?

Nov 30, 2010

This is my first time programming with visual basic, but the GUI I'm trying to create isn't complicated. So ,after looking at the tutorial for a bit, I got started.What I'm trying to do is run a c++ program which I created, but I'm making the GUI so that other people can use it easily.The c++ program needs arguments, so I have to text boxes on my GUI that will contain those arguments. One is a file path and another is an integer.I'm trying to run the .exe file for my c++ program with a shell script, but I can't get the syntax right.I don't want anything ecial I just want to run the program and pass it arguments. Here is what I have:I'm trying to use a shell command, as you can see.I can run the program from the visual studio 2008 command prompt by typing "cl DataRedux2.cpp" to compile and "DataRedux2.exe" to run.

VS 2008 Using The CommandLine Arguments Properly To Open A File

May 5, 2009

I am trying to use the Command Line Arguments during the Form_Load event to load the file a user might have selected in windows explorer.

I have set some file associations during setup, so that any ".script" files will be associated with my application. However, my application can also open other (text based) files (it's a text editor), and I would like the user to be able to use "Open With..." and select my application to open the files in my application directly.

I have to use the Command line arguments for this, which will hold the filename(s) of the selected files, correct?

So I did this:

vb.net
For Each arg As String In Environment.GetCommandLineArgs()
If IO.File.Exists(arg) Then
OpenFile(arg)
End If
Next

Now, when I open a ".script" file, my application opens and the correct file is loaded. However, in addition, the EXE file is also loaded for some reason! It has opened two files, <Applicationname>.EXE and the file I wanted to open. Because the EXE file is obviously not just a text file, it just displays some random characters, but I don't want it to open that of course...

Also, if I run the application in the debugger (visual studio), it opens the <ApplicationName>.vshost.exe file... So I thought, I can check for the extension of the argument, and only open it if it is a ".script" file. BUT I don't want that! I also want the user to be able to select any file and choose Open With... and select my application. That won't work if I check for the file extension...

Find Parent ZIP File From Arguments On Double Click In Win Explorer?

Jul 13, 2011

In Windows Explorer, when you open a ZIP file and double-click a file, say a JPEG file (.jpg), Windows extracts the JPEG file to a temporary folder, and passes the temporary file name to the associated program as the one and only argument, such as "C:UsersjpriceAppDataLocalTempTemp1_<>.zip<>.jpg"

I noticed that some applications, like the Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 7 know what ZIP file the temporary file came from. You can click next and previous and get the next/previous files from the ZIP file (as you do, they are also extracted to temporary files). I've googled and prowled through system.io.packaging, but I can't figure out how to get the path of the original ZIP file (the file name is part of the temporary file path). It's not done with the shell-->open command, Windows Photo Viewer only gets the temporary file name as far as I can tell.

The Photo Viewer command line is
%SystemRoot%System32
undll32.exe "%ProgramFiles%Windows Photo ViewerPhotoViewer.dll", ImageView_Fullscreen %1. I did use ProcessMon to watch Photo Viewer and saw it read the .zip file (probably using zipfldr.dll) but could not discover how it knew where the original zip file was.

Create Log File To Track Progress And Populate Controls Via Text File Or XML File?

May 22, 2009

I am trying to create a log file which I am going to use to populate some controls (DataGridView or Treeview). I am trying to figure out if should use text files or XML files to do so. Effectively the log will highlight multiple phases in a client-side app. The log will be written to at various phases when the project is running. The user will always have the options move on to the next phase or save progress and exit the project. As such, I want the log file to highlight how far the user has progressed throught the various phases AND I want the log to highlight varous information from each phase. Whenever the user starts the project, they will be given the option to load existing log files. So the project will have to read these log files and append them where necessary as the user progresses.

I am not sure what the best way to do this is and below is a rudimentary approach using text files. As you can see, the top of the file would have a summary of all the phases and whether or not the user completed each phase. Next each phase would have a data section highlighting what data was stored along the way. I have used a ":" to denote each section. Then within each section I would obviously need to use a delimeter for all my data. So if Phase1 = True, then I would load all the pertinent data from "Phase1:" into the desired control. Can anyone provide an efficient way of doing this and provide some insight as to whether I should use XML instead. The phases my change during development and I am not sure yet which controls I will be using. Does XML provide more flexibility.

In summary I am looking to create, read/write and append log files and populate controls with the data in varous sections of the log file. Example:

Phase1 = True
Phase2 = True
Phase3 = False
Phase4 = False

Use The DataTable.WriteXml Method To Create An XML File Without Erasing Previous Content In That File?

Feb 18, 2011

I have to generate an XML file from several database tables. I could use the WriteXml method of the DataSet to do it, but the database tables are really huge and I can't add all those tables in the DataSet at the same time or it may cause a problem because of the big amount of memory used. Then I decided to use the DataTable's WriteXml method and save table after table, but the the generated file only stores the information of the last DataTable.WriteXml's call. How can I preserve the previous XML data when adding all that information?

.net - Use Attributes And Including Arguments?

May 17, 2009

I'm writing a class-library in VB.Net and one of the subs that are being called from the application which is using my library has more or less the following syntax:

Public Sub LoadDict(ByVal PhoneticType As String, ByVal strDict As String)
where PhoneticType can be phonSoundex, phonDoubleMetaphone or noPhonetic

I want to give the application-developer a possibility to select the PhoneticType from a list when writing the call of above sub (I think it's called attribute-arguments). This would make it easier for the developer since spelling-errors can be avoided and which will avoid errors when using the library. I think it's all about attributes but I haven't managed to get it to work despite trying.

Arguments For Custom Controls?

Nov 24, 2011

I've created custom buttons in a .dll and they work fine, so I thought I'd have a go at creating my own sort of listbox to replace the standard one in my applications. It's basically a panel with a few labels and a button (eliminating the need to select an item in standard listbox then click a seperate button). I want to add these panels to a panel on a form, at run-time, based on rows in a db.

If I try adding any arguments in the New() section of the class file it won't let me use the panel in my toolbox. Is there a way to pass arguments to custom controls, I need a new custom panel for each row in a db so need to pass an id to it to specify records; or even load the records in my application and create a new panel for each record, using info passed to it to fill in the labels on it. Or can I create the panel at run-time and refer to labels within the custom controls, setting their .text properties that way?
