View 12 RepliesI am using VB .Net to access the eBay API and store all completed orders in a database. This database is then fed into a proprietary shipping system, which can not handle an order number larger than 20 characters. eBay returns an order number like so 230407279314-680141236013 which is too long. The order number is always 12 numbers a hyphen and 12 more numbers. What I need to do, is turn this (the result can be alpha numerical) into a shorter, unique order key to store in my database alongside the true orderId (so that this can be referenced by the shipping software instead of the actual order number). The reason for the 20 character limit is the barcode algorithm used. Is there any way to achieve this in VB .Net 2010? This number can be anything unique, so long as it does not exist already (even a good uniqueid function would work, but I would have to query the database to make sure it isn't taken)

I have an API that loads into memory from a button click. It can then either load an approx 10MB txt file (ASCII comma delimited characters/decimal list as a string) or live timed data from the internet. The idea is to be able to view the data in a text box. From there I can see what I am doing as far as spitting that info into a datagridview or database. The data is completely out of order in the txt file but has various Getinfo Functions / DLL's accessed via button clicks that split the data into its correct format to display in the text box. The problem I am having is not having fixed length strings in VB 2010. I don't know enough to work out if there is a simple work around or something more complicated required. Everything I have tried has left the textbox empty.

I know Val() is a VB6 function, but one thing I like about it is that you can wrap a string in it and it will "extract" the numerical value from the string if there are other things present (i.e. Val("123 Main St.") returns 123). This is the way my teacher taught us to use it. I know about the .TryParse and .Parse methods of the different data types, and how those can be used to check for a numerical value, but is there a replacement that can strip any non-numeric value from a string to put it in an integer (or double, single, decimal, etc.)?

is there a way to check if a string contains characters other than numeric? ive used isnumeric quite a bit and its pretty usefull, but cant find a way to check for text in a string. Having searched around theres a few ways of doing it slowly that ive found using an array of letters and a loop / instring, but thats much more hassle than checking for numbers, so strikes me there must be a way.

I'm using Entity Framework code first and pulling some data back from our database. In the table I'm accessing is 13 columns that store the number of a items a customer purchased per week for the last 13 weeks as a char field. I have no control over how this data is stored. I need to total the 13 weeks results together to get a combined total, so take week1 + week2 + week3.... = Total Items Purchased over 13 weeks.In SQL I'd just Cast the char to an Integer and add the values together. But I'm struggling finding a solution to do this in linq.

I have an application where the user and search the database and return the values from it. They can also figure the Average, Median, and the Standard Deviation from it. BUt I have a problem with this since the business rules won't allow the result column to be anything but a string so now I am getting error messages on the Select commnad text since it is trying to perform the calculations.
