I am using VB .Net to access the eBay API and store all completed orders in a database. This database is then fed into a proprietary shipping system, which can not handle an order number larger than 20 characters. eBay returns an order number like so 230407279314-680141236013 which is too long. The order number is always 12 numbers a hyphen and 12 more numbers. What I need to do, is turn this (the result can be alpha numerical) into a shorter, unique order key to store in my database alongside the true orderId (so that this can be referenced by the shipping software instead of the actual order number). The reason for the 20 character limit is the barcode algorithm used. Is there any way to achieve this in VB .Net 2010? This number can be anything unique, so long as it does not exist already (even a good uniqueid function would work, but I would have to query the database to make sure it isn't taken)

I am going to have a series of numbers, I want to count how many times each unique number exists in the results.For example if I have this string" "1, 2, 3, 5, 3, 7, 1" I want to know the number 1 appears 2 times, the number 2 appears 1 time, the number 3 appears 2 times, the number 5 appears 1 time, and the number 7 appears 1 time.I want to load this up into a datagrid each unique number will be stored in a column named acct the number of times the number appeared in the string will be stored in a column named numref?

The above code does not seems to work when I change my ProductID to UniqueIdentifier Datatype. This is the error I have ""Input string was not in a correct format."
But when change the ProductID to Int datatype is working fine.
Unique constraint - these columns currently doesn't have unique values..?? I have created Unique Constraint with 3 columns. My code works perfectly but once - two users @ same time entered same data and somehow it saved in DB; after that incident. This UniqueConstraint gives me error - These columns currently doesn't have unique values. How can I check if user enters this kind of entry or how can I restrict the Entry?

Therefore I have an expression like [a-z]{10}.I want to generate maybe 200.000 data - maybe more (it should be generic), every data should be unique.
How can i implement that?at the moment i have a algorithm, that generates a random string, then search in an array that stores the values, if the string is already in there it repeats that process. Otherwise it stores the string in the array.
On SqlDataSource_Insert, I'm grabbing the users unique MemberID and adding to the db. Adding the MemberID works great. I also want to add a unique EventID for the event they are submitting, but the code that I'm using below just inserts a guid with all zeros.

I have a table in an SQL database bound to a datagridview and am having an issue with understanding what happens when I add a new data row.
My datatable is built in code with the first column created using this sql command...

This is where my understanding is falling. Because I have created the datatable's first column with the NOT NULL key word, an exception throws when I try to update the data adapter because the first column of the data row is empty By creating the table with the first column the IDENTITY key word, doesn't that imply that the database will generate the value for that column? If so, when I add a new datarow, how does the identity column get filled?

"Brikkenummer" is the number of a device that each person carries with him/her, and "tid" is the time the runner has passed a specific post. The post he/her has passed is described in the column "post".Out of these three columns, is it possible to generate some kind of unique ID? The ID that is generated have to be the same if a row is displayed twice or more, to avoid duplicate entries.

I am creating files and then allowing the User to browse through the files via a ComboBox. I decided to name each file the current date. In order to create multiple reports each time the application is ran, each report needs a unique name.
The idea is that if they run a report once a day they'll have a unique report each day. But, then I realized that it is feasible that User could run a report more than once a day. So, I decided to create an integer and increment it each time the report has been ran. Then append the file name with that integer. So, report one of that day would show something like this:
12-22-2009_1 and so on.And this works just fine. But, if the user decides to close the app and then run the report later that day, the variable has been reset and no longer works as needed.I'm using a StreamWriter to create the file.

I am reading from an IO.port and returning the data to a string. I need to parse this to data rows that each represent a data record which I will add to a datagridview.
The data basically looks like this. I have inserted <SOH>,<US>, etc. for readability.

And want to create a linq filter to select only unique records for TableName + PKs (group by) ... but want it to select only the record with the highest ID for this group by.
