creating unique IDs for each row in a table, to avoid duplicates when inserting the data to a server. The table looks like this:

"Brikkenummer" is the number of a device that each person carries with him/her, and "tid" is the time the runner has passed a specific post. The post he/her has passed is described in the column "post".Out of these three columns, is it possible to generate some kind of unique ID? The ID that is generated have to be the same if a row is displayed twice or more, to avoid duplicate entries.

I want to generate a unique ID of fixed length The trouble is, the code example I found on the web is in C# (or C maybe) which I know nothing about. I tried a web-based C# to VB.net converter but the result doesn't work so its hard to understand what's going on (especially since I have not worked with bytes either this makes it more difficult).
I need to generate a globally unique ID of fixed 16-lengthThe GUID is too long for my purpose. So I wonder is there any way to convert it to a 16-length?If this is not possible, I have a program key of 8 chars, and is thinking of using the DateTime as my key.
I'm looking for a method of generating unique identifiers for a record class being created locally and then persisted in various formats (XML, SQL, etc.) I've seen people using DateTime and GetHashCode, but that seems to lend itself to duplicate identifiers depending upon the sample size. GUID is a bit overkill, as I don't need anything that unique (large) at the global level. I'm also aware of using GUIDs and GetHashCode to get the size down a bit, but duplicates tend to crop up here as well. Any best practice or method for generating simple unique identifiers?

Does anyone know a way for a datatable to be generated INSIDE the code of VB? It would be a "backup" datatable generation subroutine to be run in case the original datatable got damaged somehow (bad hard drive sectors, virus, whatever). It would need to be able to generate a "blank" datatable that could be filled in while running the program, instead of having to do it from an outside source (like Access).An example would be an "inventory" datatable (X product, Store Code, Manufacturer Code, Cost, Price).
In my app, I connect to a table to get the next unique id (t_IDs). The code basicly looks up a specific table name and returns the next value. This is fine in testing, but the application is going to be used between multipul sites. I can see an issue where this may cause the app to slow down while it waits the next id before saving all the data to another table.
My question is, Is there away to set a SQL trigger to go and get the next id value and update the record when a new record is created? BTW - I did look at the uniqueidentifier option (NewId()) but the Id is too long. I need 1,2,3,4 etc.
currently, what i want to do is, add a column in a table "default" during runtime. Well, I've got that covered already.
The problem is, the column names are actually taken from the users input through a textbox or drop down list and of course, if the same column is added already in the table, it generates an error since it has to be unique.
That is why i wonder if it is possible to know if a column already exists without viewing the form which contains the grid view of that table?

I have a database, 3 or more tables and a one of them with 3 or more columns.In this table i have ID column, Name Column, Date Column etc.I like to select one record for printing and give to the person one or more Receipt of payment (bill).But every time i like the number of Receipt to be unique. I am using VB .Net to access the eBay API and store all completed orders in a database. This database is then fed into a proprietary shipping system, which can not handle an order number larger than 20 characters. eBay returns an order number like so 230407279314-680141236013 which is too long. The order number is always 12 numbers a hyphen and 12 more numbers. What I need to do, is turn this (the result can be alpha numerical) into a shorter, unique order key to store in my database alongside the true orderId (so that this can be referenced by the shipping software instead of the actual order number). The reason for the 20 character limit is the barcode algorithm used. Is there any way to achieve this in VB .Net 2010? This number can be anything unique, so long as it does not exist already (even a good uniqueid function would work, but I would have to query the database to make sure it isn't taken)

Unique constraint - these columns currently doesn't have unique values..?? I have created Unique Constraint with 3 columns. My code works perfectly but once - two users @ same time entered same data and somehow it saved in DB; after that incident. This UniqueConstraint gives me error - These columns currently doesn't have unique values. How can I check if user enters this kind of entry or how can I restrict the Entry?

We have an application that was written in VB6 which I am trying to convert to use the latest VB (Visual Studio 2008), mostly because it's not possible to buy a licenced version of VB6 anymore (personally I'd have been happy to just keep using VB6, but without having a proper licenced version of it, we basically had to chance).The VB6 version I could simply tell it to compile the application and it produced the .exe file which I could then copy onto the server where it was running and replace the old version and then run it.
It seems like such simple things are not possible in VB 2008.I have got the application converted, and if I run it through the debugger it is working correctly, but now I need to get a compiled application to run on the server and can't seem to do it.I have tried using the publish application thing, and nothing I try succeeds in getting a working application.

My ID is the Unique Column that I need to reference back too when Updating my other Fields so I get the correct field.How do I do this? Properly.I've been thinking of a method but I doubt it would work.First I would start off selecting all the ID's and then LOOP through all of them, and then rewrite them to to + 1 Each time I make a Delete, so Each Time it will be a consistent 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 .... etc... Then I can reference from that to my Combo Box Selected Index + 1 to get the Correct Row which corresponds with the Selected Item.Will this work? Or will I still need a Unique Fields that I reference back too.
