Creating An Application To Control Affinity Of Processes
Jun 11, 2009
I am trying to create an application that will identify a process using over 50% of the CPU and set its affinity to run only on core 0. How should I go about creating this? P.S. I am trying to create this application because my PC has been creating this really anoying screaching sound when a process randomly uses over 50% of my CPU. (I have a dual-core, AMD sadly.)

I'm using a MySQL connector in VB .Net to execute a batch of SQL inserts. This is typically on the order of 5k statements and takes around 30 minutes to process. Unfortunately, when this process is running and I use a different application on the system, upon returning to the .net app it hangs and shows "not responding". In fact, as soon as I click anywhere else in the application (move to a different tab, for example) everything locks up.
Dim transaction As MySqlTransaction = sqlConnection.BeginTransaction()
For Each sqlCmd In (sqlCmdsCollection)
sqlCommand = New MySqlCommand(sqlCmd, sqlConnection)
[Code]....

I have rently deployed a VB windows application. It uses ADO typed datasets and datagrids.
On a couple of machine, if the application is left opened for a while (about more than 30 minutes), it gives no response. In order to restart it, I need to end the process vie the Task manager.
How would I even begin to troubleshoot why it is "hanging up"?

We are currently developing a WPF/Entity-Framework based application.One of our requirements was to allow the user option to select which environment(testing, training, or production) they will connect to when logging in.Each connection option points to its own database.In order to do this we are creating new EF contexts in the following way:[code]We have made sure that all new contexts are being disposed of once its job is completed.The problem is this: when the users are using the application we are seeing hundreds of SQL Server processes in SQL Server's activity monitor. Some individual users have upwards of 30+ processes associated when using the app. Once the user shuts down the app the associated processes all disappear - but while the app is running these processes seem to stick around.

I am trying to make an application which will list all processes in a string when it starts. After it has listed them all I enable my timer, and in the timer there gets checked if the process is in the process list (string), and if it isn't it will add it to my listbox. The only problem is, it's not working, it's never adding an item.
vb.net
Public Class Form1 Dim AllProcesses As String Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load 'The first check For Each p In System.Diagnostics.Process.GetProcesses() If AllProcesses = "" Then AllProcesses = p.ProcessName Else AllProcesses += "|" + p.ProcessName End

In my application I has a feature to set CPU application affinity for the application. I have a combo box with the following items:
Item 0: "ALL" -> It's point that if select the application will use all available CPUs
Item 1: "1" -> For set application to use first core
Item 2: "2" -> For set application to use second core
...
Item N....
Where N is the total numbers of CPUs/cores available in the system.
Now when the user click in one of this I execute this
Private Sub comboCPUAffinity_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles comboCPUAffinity.SelectedIndexChanged
Dim num As Integer = comboCPUAffinity.Items.Count - 1
[Code]....
This works well in my vista 2-cpu machine, and also in 1 core machines. The problem is that I have release the application and has a user who has a 64bits vista 4 cores machine, and when execute the above code the application causes a buffer overflow. This is maybe because I have something bad in the code which can not test because I have not the machine to test.

I am doing a bit of Office Automation and when printing a .doc file using VB.NET Office reference DLLs it causes great CPU load so I want to limit those processes to only use a single virtual core. I haven't been able to find anything in Microsoft's documentation about this.
This is the code I am using to print
Dim oWordApp As Word.Application
Dim oTargetDoc As Word.Document
oWordApp = New Word.Application
Select Case SQLdr("Priority")

How do I set my program's affinity to be able to run on all cores?
Yes, I know the default is all cores, but I want to know how to set it in code.
Currently, I use:
Process.GetCurrentProcess.ProcessorAffinity = CType(Environment.ProcessorCount + 1, IntPtr)

I have a Console app that loops through a queue and processes each record in a datatable. Each process is long and time-consuming (connecting to a remote website, downloading files, reading them and adding them to the database). I'm trying to implement threading for speed's sake but am having cross-threading issues. (The job takes 8 hours or so to run and the cross-threading doesn't start happening until a couple hours into the run.)I'm trying to figure out how to make my code thread safe. I don't update or rely on any non-local variables, and I don't need to return anything. I've tried locking which works but defeats the purpose of the multiple threads. What other things should I be looking for?

I was going to hijack another, related, thread to ask this, but I figured it derserved its own thread.The question I have is whether or not anybody has done sufficient testing to show whether a mutlithreaded program running on a multi-core system will spread the threads across all available cores, or whether it has some affinity for the core used by the main process (UI thread, or whatever it may be)? The reason I ask is because I remember a discussion over in General Computing where somebody showed that, for at least one case, all the threads were splitting time on a single core of a multi-core processor. I am wondering if that is the typical behavior, or an isolated case?

I am calling a function from a VB.NET webserver to a custom written unmanaged DLL.If we call this DLL via a webservice on a multi-core server we run into problems and it always crashes.If I reboot the server and make it only use a single-core, it always runs fine and never crashes.I know the DLL call is responsible for the crash as I have outputted debugging code just before and after the DLL call.I can force the processor affinity of the .NET code to 1 core but this doesn't apply to the unmanaged DLL.How can I force the unmanaged DLL to only run on a single core as I am sure this will solve the problem?

I have an array of picture boxes as so:
Dim pieces(500) As PictureBox
pieces(1) = New PictureBox
With pieces(1)
[Code].....
The program does not crash or anything, but the picturebox is no where to be seen on the form. How to I make this work correctly?
And is 'Control Array' the correct term for this? or something else?

Is this possible? I am trying to create my own "X" and "minimize" buttons on my form -- the only way that I can currently think to do it is by making my form have no border, and creating a 'fake' menu bar using labels and buttons for minimizing and maximizing. The goal here is to be able to have custom icons for maximize, close, etc that may not match the Windows default scheme.

I'm coding an application that will work with many arrays of data. To make the code easier I want to make a user control (called Multiselect) that will include a textbox and a treeview. The textbox will be alway visible and treeview will appear when needed.The user will put a string in the textbox and the MultiSelect will search all of the stored data in a array that match the searched string. When done, the TreeView will appear and show the found items. User will have an opportunity to choose the right items through checkboxes.
What I can't do is the TreeView. I want it to act like the autocomplete in Visual Studio editor - for example you are in a class and type "me." and Visual Studio offers you all methods possible in a window. This windows doesnt get focus, but if on the top of the main form so the found items are visible over the text.

I want to create a control that drops onto that tray area below the form designer. Such as how a FileSaveDialog or an ErrorProvider would do. A class that's available in the toolbox and the properties are available visually in the designer, instead of declaring it in the form's text code. What do I have to set to get that behavior?

I am doing a project on the CRM application which can sending or receiving of emails and sms. Most of the CRM application that has been build is using the web form which mean the application of the CRM is build as website. But the problem is that I am doing it in the windows application. The CRM application that I am doing is the the admin can send/receive emails and sms. It is some sort like microsoft outlook. but the difference is that in microsoft outlook it can only send emails. When i search the internet for the gateway, there is no free gateway. Is there any examples for sending or receiving of sms and emails. My group partner is doing on the emails which he uses the SMTP server.

I am doing a project of CRM application which does sending and receiving sms/email. I am doing this using the visual studios 2005 ans SQL Server Database to store the send or received sms/email. I have search on sms in the internet but the problem is that it is using C# as I am using the vb.net language. Even though some of the research that i came across is in vb.net but the application did not work.
In my research, the sending and receiving of sms application uses sms gateway, AT command. But I am not sure which one to use becoz I am doing this application for my project. Hope for any recommendation on which one to use either the sms gateway or AT command or any other device. My lecturer said that my project is most likely like the M2U Mozat. Not only that I am doing the sms but also the email. The email part is done by my partner but the problem is that he creates the email using the SMTP server. How can using a SMTP server to create sms? It is because the part that I am doing which is the sms and the email to combine together.
