Custom Collection Class Bound To DataGridView Text Formatting?
Aug 14, 2011
I have a custom collection class that is bound to a data grid view object.I'd like to try to do the following from the custom element class if possible.
1) I'd like the name of the column header to be a different text than the name of the public property in the custom class. i.e. Trade_Name should read "Trade Name"
2) I'd like to try to be able to manipulate the text formatting/color of the individual collection class element's items. i.e. for a profit/loss field I'd like to have the numbers be red if they are loss and black of they are profit. I know I could do this from the datagridview object in the form, but that can be cumbersome to raise events etc.

I have several custom classes in a VB.NET (VS2008) project which are related to each other through generic list collections. The lower tier classes refer directly to some of the parent classes (to make it easier to refer backwards up the chain). My question is, is it possible to add the reference to the parent class when the item is added to a collection, when that collection is a property?
Below is some sampling of code to illustrate.
Public Class FlexServer
Private m_FlexLicenses As List(Of FlexLicense)
Private m_Modules As List(Of FlexModule)
Public Property FlexLicenses() As List(Of FlexLicense)
[code] .....
In the code above I have the FlexServer class which refers has two lists as properties, one for FlexLicense and one for Modules. The FlexLicense class has a property to refer back to the FlexServer class that "owns" it. In order to update this property in code, I have to add the FlexLicense to the FlexServer.FlexLicenses list AND set the FlexLicense.FlexServer property. What I am looking for is, is there a way (in the property definition or wherever) to both add the item to the list and alter it at the same time?

I have a DataGridView (dgv) on a Windows form (VB.NET) which is bound to a datatable. One of the bound columns is a an ID (Foreign Key) to another datatable. All I want to do is Hide the ID column and populate an unbound column with the Name (ParmName) for the user. I searched the foreign value in the datatable and retrieved the information. I set the Value of the cell in the Datarow. All works well, but does not display. The cell accepts the value...I can even Debug.Print the values to the console. They are there just nothing displaying in DataGridView. Nothing odd about DataGridView. Should be straight forward...
My Code
,
Dim dtParm As DataTable = MyDataSet.tblParameter
Dim dgv As DataGridView = Me.dgvResultNum_DataGrid

I have a datagridview which is bound to a local databse table through a Linq to SQL class.
Everything works as I would expect, when the application runs, up to a point.
If, in the datagridview tasks pane I enable Adding, Editing and Deleting all work as expected.
If I disable Adding & Deleting, leaving Editing enabled, Editing works as expected.
If I disable Deleting & Editing, but leave Adding enabled, Adding does not work, despite the row for new records being displayed. I can move around the row but not enter data.
I suspect somehow its the datasource as opposed to the datagridview that is the cause of my problem but as I say, I can add rows if the Enable Editing option is selected.
Changing the relevant properties programatically makes no difference.
I've been searching for the reason for a couple of days without success.
I have a workaround, by leaving Enable Editing set and programatically setting each row during the RowPostPaint event to be readonly except the row for new records. I would just like to understand what is going on.

Can anyone tell me why "Rows cannot be programmatically added to the DataGridView's rows collection when the control is data-bound." I keep getting an error "Invalid Operation Exception was Unhandled" error. All I am attempting to do is allow the user to select products from a list(or a second datagridview) and have it added to the datagridview so they do not have to type in every cell since the other cells are not visible because they do not purtain to their needs. Plus they will be able to save all items at the same time.

I have a DGV that is bound to an Access DB DataTable. I have added a column in the DB that is either a 0 or a 1. When the program loads, I want to change the backcolor and forecolor of each row based on the value of this column's cell. ie: a 1 makes the row red, a 0 makes the row green. this column would be hidden in the DGV.
Is this possible to do at runtime even though it is bound?
I'm not sure when I would actually do the color swap, formLoad?
Second question, as I iterate through each row of the DataGridView and need to change the value of this column, will this update my DB automatically, or do I need to call an update() after each row?

I'm trying to format a datetime field to just show the date. The datetime is bound to an asp:label and for the Text attribute I have tried the following....
Text= String.Format("{0:D}", '<%# Bind("CReviewDate") %>')
and
Text= String.Format("{0:D}", <%# Bind("CReviewDate") %>)
[code]....
In all cases I get a green wavy line under the equation and the tip help says "Validation (ASP.Net): If this attribute value is enclosed in quotation marks, the quotation marks must match.
String.Format("{0:D}", DateTime.Now)
is the syntax that I have been told should work.

I have a window form with a label. On the form I have a dataset, bindingsoure, and tableadaptor (all created by the IDE in response to binding the text property of the label) To fill the datatable, the IDE created this: Me.ClientsTableAdapter.Fill(Me.MyDataSet.Clients) Works fine. The bound field is a phone number, stored in the db as a 10 digit numeric string I need to format this with the standard ()-, and I have a function that will do just that. How can I apply the formatting so the phone number appears in the label properly?

I am creating a simple website using the language of VB.NET, I am having trouble with one part at the moment and could really use some help.
At the moment I have items that are stored in a database, when the homepage loads these items are added to a Gridview which allows the user to select the items they wish to add to their shopping cart. Once an item is selected from the gridview it is added to a collection. That collection is then added to a Session. This is the code I have for completing that task.[code]...

Visual studio 2005 - vb.net..I have a user control on a form containing 15 combo boxes.All contain Y, N, and blank (for Yes, No, or blank) in the Items Collection property.Each of the combo boxes have a binding source to the same table, different fields.When you select a value Y, N, or blank for any of the fields and do a save, the values save while the application is open.Once you close and reopen, the values are gone.It appears the dataset does not recognize the change, so the values are not getting stored in the database table. Is there something I can do or put in one of the events that would identify this as a change.

Appropriate Title would be: Bind comboBox Tag to database.I have a comboBox on form which is bounded but and I need to populate it manually. With some reading on net i have found a way but it is not working
I can populate my combo, select item in combo, update database but the problem is when I load my form it displays empty combo (combo is fulled with my custom data but nothing is selected it must select correct ItemText) and after selecting a value in combo, the value disappears as soon as combo losses focus .

I have a DataGridView bound to a DataTable in a DataSet.I set all columns of the DataTable to System.Double.I want the last row of the DataGridView to display "PASS" or "FAIL" depending on some condition of the values in that column.How do I do this?
Ideas:
lastCell = IIF(condition, Double.PositiveInfinity, Double.NegativeInfinity)
Then, apply some conditional formatting (Inf -> PASS, -Inf -> FAIL) to the final row of the DataGridView.

I'm having a bit of an issue getting the number formatting of VB .NET 3.5 to work just right for me. I have to convert numbers to scientific notation, with 2 digits for the exponent and 6 digits after the decimal. I've been able to get this for numbers that have enough digits, but for other numbers, it truncates the number to use as few digits as possible. For example, I would like 0 to be converted to 0.000000e00, or 123.4 to be 1.234000e02.

I have a datagridview that is bound to a list object of a custom type via a BindingSource. From everything I've read, I should be able to click the column headers and the rows sort, This doesn't happen for me. Sortmode is set to automatic and the column headers aren't set to be used for selection so it should work.
I know that I could sort progamatticly but that seems a little bit of a waste given that I should just be able to do it by default.

There is something strange going on with my datagridview.
I've a data adapter that fills the underlying data table from a database. Then I assign this datatable as datasource to the datagridview Then I add a row to the datagridview and immediately I need to update the table in my database (as soon as user leaves the newly created row).
At this moment I have more rows (+2, not +1) in my datagridview than in the underlying datatable (the new row doesn't exists yet in it so the data adapter .Update method doesn't write anything to the database).
When DataGridView's .RowLeave event fires the undelying datatable is not yet updated. I've a question - is this behavior normal?

In my app I present to the user an option to customize the name of the file that gets produced. The format string the program reads is something like "yyyyMMdd-%1-%2-%3-%4" which the user can customize to his liking. In this case the format of the date is yyyyMMdd and the %1 is the trip number like 1000P, %2 is the origin code like PTTTT, %3 is the destination code like PHYUD, and %4 is a secondary stop code like YYYY123. I'm having problems taking the actual data and formatting into the custom string. I believe its the date format that I'm getting stuck on.
So far I have
sOut = txtFormatPattern.Text
sOut = sOut.Replace("%1", "1000P")
sOut = sOut.Replace("%2", "PTTTT")
sOut = sOut.Replace("%3", "PHYUD")
sOut = sOut.Replace("%4", "YYYY123")
sOut = myDate.ToString(sOut) 'date is July 01, 2007
The output is "20070701-#1000P-PTTTTP12YUD (YYYY123)"
The problem obviously here is my last conversion. The string contains key characters that denote a part of the date specifically in PHYUD. So my question is how can I give my user the flexibility to format the output as they wish and then convert that properly?

[code]The reason that this is a problem is that this is a collection of EventBase objects, but I'm trying to populate it with child classes instead. For example, I might have a JumpEvent class that inherits EventBase, and this is being put into the EventBaseCollection. That means that value.GetType() returns the type of JumpEvent, which as you might guess does not equal the type of EventBase.The goal of course is to simply loop through all of the various events without having to know anything about the sub-classes. Is there a way to determine the type of the base class so that the OnValidate call will work? Or is this just the wrong way to go about it altogether?
