I am having a problem with the Visual Basic property collection editor .
I have created a Custom Type
Public Class Field
Private Item As Integer
Private Name As String = "FieldName"

I have been researching for a couple of days now and to no avail. Does Anyone know how to make a custom collection that take advantage of the collection editor? I would like to be able to have 3 Color Values, 1 Boolean and 1 String.

View 1 RepliesI've lived in the VB6 world for the last 15 years and am only now starting to learn .NET. I've got a long way to go, but I am hung up on a fundamental issue about collections.I live and die by collections in VB6; I use them for just about everything I do.So I am very used to having the abilities that the intrinsic VB6 Collection has.Things like adding items with keys, referencing items by key or index, having the "Add" method return an instance of the object, being able to add custom procedures to the collection, having it strongly typed, etc.But all of the collection information I have read about in .NET doesn't really do all of this.(I am starting out in VB.NET, with the possibility of moving to C# at a later time, so i am trying to stay away from the Microsoft.VisualBasic namespace.)

View 2 RepliesI wrote a class which imports System.Collections.ObjectModel. For the management of the collection, I've written:
Default Public ReadOnly Property Item(ByVal vntIndexKey As Integer) As ItemType
Get
Return CType(mCol.Item(vntIndexKey), ItemType)
[code].....
To the point: I need to transfer a custom object's event through a generic collection object containing these items so that any class using the collection can see that changes were made to one of the items in the collection.
I.E. An item event that triggers a collection event
[Code].....
Due to the application requirements, I need the Collection and Items to send immediate notice of various changes that occur to the Collection Class and its items. I've already got my events set-up regarding for the Collection Class, but I'm struggling with coming up with a workable solution for raising events for the items.
I've got an event for the DeviceLayer item set-up, but how do you transfer that event through the CollectionClass so that any other class using it will see that there was a change to one of the items in the collection?
During a code review I looked at set of repository classes (in vb.net). I am used to seeing these repository classes full of functions that return collections (among other things) of your domain objects. However, this repository had 1 public property and 1 private variable that looked something like this:
Private _item as Collection (of Customer)
Public Item as Collection (of Customer)
Get...
Set...
In the "Get", there is code that gets a the Customers from the DAL and loads it in the private _item. What would the benefits be in using a property (customerRepository.Item) instead of plain old function (customerRepository.GetAllCustomers)? The "Property" way looks odd to me but odd doesn't always mean wrong.
I have an asp.net usercontrol which represents a "popup" dialog. Basically, it's a wrapper for the jQuery UI dialog which can be subclassed to easily make dialogs. As part of this control, I need to inject a div into the page the control is used on, either at the very top or very bottom of the form so that when the popup is instantiated, it's parent is changed to this div. This allows "nested" popups without the child popup being trapped inside the parent popup.
The trouble is, I can't find a safe way to inject this div into the page. A usercontrol doesn't have a preinit event, so I can't do it there, and calling Page.Form.Controls.Add(...) in Init, Load or PreRender causes the standard exception "The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases."
I thought I had found a solution by using. ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(Page, Me.GetType, UniqueID + "_Dialog_Div", containerDiv, False) which seemed to work well normally, but recently a coworker tried putting an UpdatePanel inside the dialog and now she's getting the error "The script tag registered for type 'ASP.controls_order_viewzips_ascx' and key 'ctl00$ContentBody$OViewZips_Dialog_Div' has invalid characters outside of the script tags: . Only properly formatted script tags can be registered."
How are you supposed to add controls to the pages control collection from inside a user control?
I have a custom collection class that is bound to a data grid view object.I'd like to try to do the following from the custom element class if possible.
1) I'd like the name of the column header to be a different text than the name of the public property in the custom class. i.e. Trade_Name should read "Trade Name"
2) I'd like to try to be able to manipulate the text formatting/color of the individual collection class element's items. i.e. for a profit/loss field I'd like to have the numbers be red if they are loss and black of they are profit. I know I could do this from the datagridview object in the form, but that can be cumbersome to raise events etc.
We use a custom collection derived from CollectionBase to store our Business objects

I have a custom collection, lets says COL, that derives from ObjectModel.Collection. I have my own collection editor that works fine when a property, of type COL, is Read and Write enabled. However, if I change the property to ReadOnly, the open editor button stops showing in the property grid. As a test, I override my custom editor with the CollectionEditor, and that worked fine. So, my question is, what check is the property grid making, that CollectionEditor passes but my collection editor fails?
View 2 RepliesI have several custom classes in a VB.NET (VS2008) project which are related to each other through generic list collections. The lower tier classes refer directly to some of the parent classes (to make it easier to refer backwards up the chain). My question is, is it possible to add the reference to the parent class when the item is added to a collection, when that collection is a property?
Below is some sampling of code to illustrate.
Public Class FlexServer
Private m_FlexLicenses As List(Of FlexLicense)
Private m_Modules As List(Of FlexModule)
Public Property FlexLicenses() As List(Of FlexLicense)
[code] .....
In the code above I have the FlexServer class which refers has two lists as properties, one for FlexLicense and one for Modules. The FlexLicense class has a property to refer back to the FlexServer class that "owns" it. In order to update this property in code, I have to add the FlexLicense to the FlexServer.FlexLicenses list AND set the FlexLicense.FlexServer property. What I am looking for is, is there a way (in the property definition or wherever) to both add the item to the list and alter it at the same time?
I am using custom textboxes and I need to be able to set the Text on txb1 based on the Text of txb2. I have simplied my code to the following:
Public Class customtextbox
Inherits TextBox
Public Event ControlReset()
[Code]....
So, when txb1 looses focus, if its Text is "fried", then it sets off txb2's ProcessAlert function. I had tried to change the value of txb2 Text in ProcessAlert function, but didnt work, so I tried to get it to raise an event instead, which then tries to set the Text property. However I still cant set txb2's Text property. The Text property seems to be set for the duration of the "life" of the Event handler. When I step through the forms controls within the Event handler, the changed Text value is there, but not outside of the Event handler.

We have a ASP.NET web application written in VB.NET where we build content programmatically during the Init event.We make extensive use of user controls, building them on the fly, and I now want to start including SilverLight content.Is there an easy way of embedding a SilverLight application in a control, and then instantiating the whole thing in code, in the same way as you'd programmatically add ordinary ASP.NET controls to a page?The SilverLight component itself works fine when added to a page using the <object> tag but I really want to be able to reuse it elsewhere in code.Since I'm expecting use of SilverLight to increase in our application, and the asp:Silverlight control seems now to be deprecated, I'm looking for an alternative way of wrapping the content.

What I've done is create a User Control Library (Project) and I've added a single User Control to that project. The control contains a single FlowLayoutPanel, and I created a Property on the control itself to pass the FlowDirection from the Control to its FlowLayoutPanel child.
Build, reference, component appears in the Toolbox and everything works fine, but the property on the control does not appear in the Properties window when I go to edit it at design time.
I've got a panel (pnlExpenses) with several labels and textboxes on it. I want the program to go through the dollar amounts entered in the textboxes and put the subtotal in a class level variable (dcSumOfExpenses). However, when the debugger passes through this Sub, objControl always shows a value of Nothing, and the Count of pnlExpenses.Controls always shows a zero. What is my code missing? The panel was added to a tabpage at design time, and the labels and textboxes were laid on top of the panel. Do I need to do something more to establish the panel's controls as a collection?
Private Sub SumExpenses()
dcSumOfExpenses = 0
Dim objControl As Control

Private Function GetWebDataGridOKButtonId() As String
Dim ctls As ControlCollection = _
WebDataGrid1.Controls(0).Controls(0).Controls

This is not working for me. I am trying to iterate a control collection and return one control ID.
I am trying to dynamically add some css and js elements into an ASP.Net page at runtime, but because this code is used in mutliple controls I need to ensure that the relevant links are only injected once.
Currently I have the folowing code in the OnPreRender event.

If Not _useCustomStyles Then
Dim litCustomCss As New LiteralControl("<link rel=" & Chr(34) & "stylesheet" &

Does .Contains look for this instance of an object (which I assume is why this is failing)?
Is there a way to check the controls collection for a specific id? Or am I going to have to write a sub to loop through the existing controls in the collection checking for the id.
I have a small piece of code that iterates through the controls collection on a panel (below) Everything works fine until I want to focus on a control that doesn't support the selectall method i.e. a datetimepicker. Is there any way of determining the type of control and not call the selectall method when the type is datetimepicker. All my other controls support it so that's the only one I need to exclude.

View 9 RepliesThis is a related to my last post, but not enough to make sense as a tag on question.I have a collection(of myClass) that is exposed as a public property in a user control.When I add an item to the collection in code I would make the call collection.add(new myClass) and of course the constructor for myClass is called.When I add items to the collection via the design time menu the constructor for myClass is not called.... of it it is called, I can't see any evidence of it.
