I have Combobox "Combo5" with a string value selected by the user.
How would I assign that selected value to another variable that I want to use later on or how od I refer to a combobox value that is currently selected?

Trying to learn VB 2005. So my questions might tend to use the logic from VBA/VB6.
So, my question is, is it possible to assign indexes on the listbox/combobox? What I have is an ID and a Description from a table and would like to display it on listbox/combobox to allow user to choose from by looking for required description. When selected the ID will be used to search for other information related to this ID.
I manage to display the description but how to assign the IDs?

So I am able to get the comboBox populated with the proper list of "clientLocations".
However they all have a valueMember of 0; thus the issue at hand is properly assigning the value of the comboBox items to the database column (which is returned in the dataset) rather than just the name.

I have a combobox that is bound to a database.After I click "New Record" to insert a new record, I want to default to the first item in the Combobox list. This will speed up user input.any ideas. I have tried most ways but this should work correct:

ComboA is binded to the Customerstbl and displays the CustomerNames. ComboB is Binded to the CustomerContactstbl for the selected customer above and displays all Contacts for that customer is a second cbobox.
I am having a hell of a time with this, When I select a customers name in ComboA, I want ComboB to automattically query the contacts in ComboB based on ComboA's selection. where do I create the query for getting the contacts for that customer?
In the Customer or Contacts tbl?
Is this something that would be better hard coding or is VS2005 that much improved that its ok to use these binding features?

There is a connection in my program to SQL Server and there is a query which is bound to a combo box, to pull out values from the database. For some reason, I get an error message during run-time, saying that the syntax is incorrect.

I'm currently coding an ATM system in VB, and when a user picks a card to 'log on' with, they have 3 attempts to log on before the card is confiscated. The card numbers are in a combobox (which are retreived from an SQL database using the DataAdapter), and each card has a boolean 'confiscated' field in the database.

I have a very simple database project. I made some project before, and now I can't find the error in my project. So I have two database, one for customers, and one for customer statuses. I want to use a databounded combobox for control customer statuses. But this combobox isn't working. I made everything, like in my other projects, I used datbounded comboboxes before. I attached my project, and my .mdf file. Copy the .mdf into C: root. MY project's language is not english, but the whole project is very little.

I have two tables: MajorCategoryTbl and MinorCategoryTbl , MajorCategoryTbl has PK and description field, MinorCategoryTbl has a PK, MajorID (foreign key), and description field. Whn the form loads I get the data from the db and bind to the combobox. that works fine and here is the code I use in form load to cause this to happen: [code] Now if there is not an Account Type, I have a button that will pull up a small form to allow the addition of an account type. The popup form adds the data back to the database just fine, but I am now trying to get the combobox to refresh its data. So I call a public Sub that is located in the parent form to from the popup form to accomplish this task and I have walked the code and the sub is called and appears to work correctly, but the new data never appears in the combobox. Here is my public sub that i call to try and refresh the combobox on the parent form. [code] But when I go back to the parent form, the combobox is not updated with the new account. I have a tab control application, each tab loads a particular user control and each of those user controls will then add other user controls that are used amongst other the user controls. For example, I have an "ucQuotes" page and an "ucInventory" page, when the specific tab is selected, the "uc****" user control is loaded on that page, and in the case of "ucQuotes" and "ucInventory" they both use a control called "ucPartNumber"; a user control consisting of a combobox, textbox, and button. I have no issues reusing the shared user controls, in this case. My problem arises with my "ucQuickPrice" control, as it is always present at the bottom of the tab control form (separate from the tabcontrol, but on the same form), and it too uses ucPartnumber.
Here's my issue, as I type into the ucPartnumber combobox, the text I type does not appear in the combobox, it appears in the textbox of the ucPartnumber control that is being used on the tabcontrol page. There are no shared instances of ucPartNumber, nor do I have this issue between typing on one tab page and the text showing on the user control of another tab page.I tried just creating the ucPartNumber controls on the ucQuickPrice control, not adding a new instance of ucPartnumber on the .Load event, and the issue persists.
The combobox(s) in question are bound programmatically with about 40,000 items, ".datasource = dataset.tablename" not to a bindingsource. Autocomplete is set to none, I added code to utilize tool tips and the basic combobox filtering functionality. Is this a bug, or is there something I'm neglecting? I'm about 95% complete with this application, and this just happened today. I made the decision, to just reuse the ucPartNumber control on the ucQuickPrice control (originallly it's size and orientation would not fit, but I added some coding to detect what parent is adding ucPartNumber and to change its appearance accordingly). Before, I made this change, I did not have this problem. And, in trying to go back to how I had things set up before the change, the problem will not go away. if the whole control within a control verbage I used is a bit confusing, let me know and I'll try to better explain what is happening. At this point, I'm going to close and reopen vbexpress, as when I started this ordeal, vb started acting weird and wanted me to save all my work, it usually does this before locking up.
I am new to vb.net and I am using visual studio 2010. I have two comboboxes on a form, each combobox is set to DropDownList so that a list of items can show in the combobox, but no text is allowed to be entered.
For combobox A, if user chooses item 1, the list of combobox B should be updated accordingly. I think this is quite common on a lot of applications. But I do not know to implement it. I even do not know the keyword to search for the relevant property or event handler.

I am making a custom ComboBox, inherited from Winforms' standard ComboBox. For my custom ComboBox, I set DrawMode to OwnerDrawFixed and DropDownStyle to DropDownList. Then I write my own OnDrawItem method. But I ended up like this:

Update 1: ButtonRenderer After searching all around, I found the ButtonRenderer class. It provides a DrawButton static/shared method which -- as the name implies -- draws the proper 3D button. I'm experimenting with it now.
Update 2: What overwrites my control?I tried using the Graphics properties of various objects I can think of, but I always fail. Finally, I tried the Graphics of the form, and apparently something is overwriting my button.
