DB/Reporting :: How To Handle Timeout Expired Exception
Mar 9, 2008What do you think is the best way of handling a Timeout Expired exception?

View 4 RepliesI'm not sure if this is a VB.NET error or SQL Server. But I get the above error with following stack trace:
[SqlException (0x80131904): Timeout
expired. The timeout period elapsed
prior to completion of the operation
or the server is not responding.]
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException

I am working with synchronizing 2 databases (SQL Express and SQL Compact Edition) using VS 2010. It works fine when the program first running. However the SQL Command "Timeout expired" Exception occurred when the code has been executed for several times. The error message is:

am using vb.net 2008 and sql server 2008. I have a search form and when i search at times, I have "Connection Timeout Expired" error.I dispose and close the connection after establishment, but i still get it. tried setting MyConObj.ConnectionTimeout = 0 and it also gives me "Property ConnectionTimeout is ReadOnly.
View 1 RepliesI am connecting to a vendor-supplied Web Service running in our domain and am attempting to execute one of its methods. I am receiving the error below (Timeout Expired) and not sure how to fix it. The server is running SQL Server 2000 (soon to be upgraded!) and I have checked the timeout setting which is set to 0 (unlimited)
View 4 RepliesThe following is my connectionstring: server=(local);database=JnJ3;uid=sa;pwd=sa May I know how can I avoid timeout expired because I keep on receiving error message when deal with huge amount of data.The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
View 2 RepliesI have an application using taskfactory that creates multiple tasks which insert records into the same table in a database. I have jobs that cleanup the table when it gets too large and have the execution time-out set to 0 in options in sql server management studio. I keep getting the following error on the tasks when trying to do an insert using a stored procedure and set an exception handling process to sleep and try again. This does not help as it seems it timeouts on almost every attempt.Not sure how to handle this and ensure the table handles all these inserts. Tried including connect timeout = 600 in one of the processes connectionstring but this did not help.Also set sqlquerytimeout value in registry to 90 but still not helping.
ERROR: timeout expired the timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding...
could not see the details of the error since visual studio 2010 debug options had to be set that way, but I will set a responsestream and capture but I rebooted sql server and somehow everything is fine now...not sure why.
Errors have reoccurred.

I am getting an error while fetching the records from sql server to datagridview. Ex. I have 10 rows in datagridview first five are with one table and next five for another table. When loop goes for next table it throws an error like "timeout expired. the timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. The statement has been terminated."

string avl_chapter = dtgqueformat[9, h].Value.ToString();

I am working on uses the ThreadPool class and specifically the QueueUserWorkItem method to launch its background tasks. I am however having an issue related to SqlConnection timeouts. My error is this: "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached."
This code is using all available ThreadPool threads because it is processing nearly 100,000 items, each on a threadpool thread, and updating an SQL database. So my question is this? Has anyone ran into a similar problem or could shed some light on a resolution to this issue? In testing, if I use the threadpool. setmaxthreads function and give it a value of 100 (to match the default Sql connection pooling count) then all runs just fine, but much to slow to process this much data.

My application requires a user to log in and allows them to edit a list of things. However, it seems that if the same user always logs in and out and edits the list, this user will run into a "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired." error. I've read a comment about it possibly caused by uncommitted transactions. And I do have one going in the application.

I have the following portion of code on a Click Event on my page:

View 1 RepliesThe port connection is successful but when it gets to receive data I get this timeout exception. Got no idea what to do...what to fix
System.TimeoutException: The operation has timed out.
at System.IO.Ports.SerialStream.Read(Byte[] array, Int32 offset, Int32 count, Int32 timeout)
[code].....
Both of these properties have a default value of 30 seconds but I am setting them to something much shorter (8) and my application does not seem to recognize the timeout. Even if I allow the default value of 30 seconds to elapse I still am waiting on the timeout. I am trying to use the connecttimeout to notify my client application that the remote sql server is not available before I try and execute a sql transaction.
I am not sure why this is not working though, the sqlexception for timing out has worked for me before and all I did was set a non-default property. The only change here is that this is a MDI type of project, which shouldn't matter.

I was working on a project in my VB.NET Express and suddenly my code that was working fine and starting up as normal gave me this error:
{An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Corrupt .resources file. Got an unexpected EndOfStreamException while trying to read the ResourceReader header.}
When I'm trying to run my application, it doesn't open my main form.
I ran into an interesting dilemna today. I have a function that handles information and checks for duplicate values, then returns the next number that is not a duplicate. So, I have something like this:
Public Function GetNextNonDuplicateNumber(NumberToCheck as Long) as Long
//the non-duplicate the function will return
Dim NonDuplicate as Long
'duplicate
If CheckForDuplicate(NumberToCheck) = True Then
Throw New DuplicateException()
[Code] .....
As you can see, I want to handle the exception specifically, but I also want to throw it when I'm done because I want to alert other code outside the function. The problem is that simply throwing it exits out of the function with a null value.
i am using data grid view.if i loaded this data grid view with about 15 and above rows and traverse in data grid view by pressing down arrow key then an unhandeled exception throws.The unhandled exception is as below value of '176' is not valid for 'value' .'value' should be between 'minimum' and 'maximum' parameter name value..
View 2 RepliesI am using VB.Net code to print barcode label in Zebra TLP 2844 printer. And the printer is connected to system by USB port. When i execute the code i get an error "Invalid Parameter : Name handle" in the line outFile = New FileStream(_SafeFileHandle, FileAccess.Write) . As this is a USB port So i shared the printer and used the UNC path. But still i get the error. Below is the complete code

I want to force a calling method to implement exception handling.
Java forces a calling method to implement exception handling where it calls another method that thorws an exception.
Does VB.Net have the same mechanism?
I am trying to get a list of files using this line of Dim files() As String = IO.Directory.GetFiles("D:", "*.*", SearchOption.AllDirectories)But it errors out on folders that are inaccessible, like the RecycleBin folder & the program stops. So how do I get a list of files in all folders, while skipping the inaccessible one
View 1 RepliesI have searched other forums, google, etc. and have not find a solution. I am creating a VB.NET application using Visual Studio 2010. My application runs fine inside the IDE. Outside of the IDE, it crashes immediately with an OOM exception. I have compiled the program in both VS 2010 and VS2008. The outcome is always the same. I increased my Desktop heap to 12288 meg from 3072 meg thinking that was the issue, but the outcome is the case. Although the increase does improve my response in the IDE. The error is also being reported as related to mscorlib.dll; and my version is for 2.0 framework is 2.0.50727 and for 4.0 framework is 4.0.30319. I am running Windows XP/SP3.
View 13 RepliesIs there a way I can catch and handle two different exceptions within the same exception type? For example:
Try
' My code
Catch ex As System.Net.WebException
End Try
I have 2 different exceptions that are System.Net.WebException. I want to handle them different ways. Problem is the catch block above catches them both. Is there a way I can determine if which of the two it is and handle them differently?
I'm trying to handle DBNull exception while reading data from database. It's my code:
...
Dim SQLRDAs SqlDataReader
...
val1= GetStringFromDB(Trim(SQLRD("Name")))
val2= GetStringFromDB(Trim(SQLRD("Level")))
[Code]...
But still I get Conversion from type 'DBNull' to type 'String' is not valid. error.
Have a populated listview with check boxes. If the item is checked I want to send it to report for printing. This code is bypassed:
Code:
Private Sub GetSelectedItems()
If Not Me.ListView1.SelectedItems.Count = 0 Then
[code]....
Count is always = 0. This seems to work only if the item is double clicked. And then only one item is returned in the msgbox. MSDN says "The SelectedItems property will not contain any items if the property is accessed before the ListView handle is created, which typically occurs when ListView is initially loaded for display in the form. You can check to see if the handle is created with the IsHandleCreated property."
When I tried to check for the handle, an error said something about overloading. So I added this:
Code:
Public Overloads ReadOnly Property GetSelectdItems()
Get
If Not Me.ListView1.SelectedItems.Count = 0 Then
[code]....
Which does not help. How to find the items checked/create the needed handle?
I am getting an error "Operation is not allowed while object is closed". On this line of code "Do While myRecSet.EOF = False" here is all my code. First the module/function
Code:
Module Module1
Public coater As String
Public myQuery As String
Public myRecSet As New ADODB.Recordset
Public Conn As ADODB.Connection

I don't understand why this piece of code is getting an Index out of range exception. I checked the column names and they are OK. The same code was used for another database and ran without problems. Both databases are in Access.

Ok, so I'm making a small system that deals with route making. Effectively all I'm trying to do is open the connection to my SQL database at the moment and this error turns up.
The data it says is the problem is:
{System.Collections.ListDictionaryInternal}
[code]......
I'm just testing my application to ensure all exceptions are handled gracefully, but I'm having problems with one particular error.
The code looks like this:
Code:
Try
fw = New StreamWriter(GlobalFileName, False) 'Open for overwriting
{stuff}
[Code]....
This code seems to catch errors such as the file being used by another process or whatever, but in the case of insufficient permissions to the directory (ie. 'read only') the code breaks with the error:
Unhandled exception has occurred in your application... Access to the path '...' is denied.
It is definately the "new streamwriter" line that is crashing it, but why isn't this particular error handled by the "catch exception"?
It is possible to catch an exception and throw a new exception which wraps the first exception as an inner exception: [URL] Also, if I call a function and it throws a certain error, but I catch it, will the calling code's catch handler execute? If so, and it is of a higher exception type, is this not wrapping the exception? eg I can throw exception ex of type IndexOutOfRange, log it but rethrow, catch a higher up exception and do something, or I can throw a new exception and wrap an inner exception like:
