SQL Command "Timeout Expired" Exception While Handling ClientInsertServerInsert Sync Conflict
Jun 4, 2012
I am working with synchronizing 2 databases (SQL Express and SQL Compact Edition) using VS 2010. It works fine when the program first running. However the SQL Command "Timeout expired" Exception occurred when the code has been executed for several times. The error message is:

I'm not sure if this is a VB.NET error or SQL Server. But I get the above error with following stack trace:
[SqlException (0x80131904): Timeout
expired. The timeout period elapsed
prior to completion of the operation
or the server is not responding.]

I am connecting to a vendor-supplied Web Service running in our domain and am attempting to execute one of its methods. I am receiving the error below (Timeout Expired) and not sure how to fix it. The server is running SQL Server 2000 (soon to be upgraded!) and I have checked the timeout setting which is set to 0 (unlimited)

I have an application using taskfactory that creates multiple tasks which insert records into the same table in a database. I have jobs that cleanup the table when it gets too large and have the execution time-out set to 0 in options in sql server management studio. I keep getting the following error on the tasks when trying to do an insert using a stored procedure and set an exception handling process to sleep and try again. This does not help as it seems it timeouts on almost every attempt.Not sure how to handle this and ensure the table handles all these inserts. Tried including connect timeout = 600 in one of the processes connectionstring but this did not help.Also set sqlquerytimeout value in registry to 90 but still not helping.
ERROR: timeout expired the timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding...
could not see the details of the error since visual studio 2010 debug options had to be set that way, but I will set a responsestream and capture but I rebooted sql server and somehow everything is fine now...not sure why.
Errors have reoccurred.

I am getting an error while fetching the records from sql server to datagridview. Ex. I have 10 rows in datagridview first five are with one table and next five for another table. When loop goes for next table it throws an error like "timeout expired. the timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. The statement has been terminated."
for (int h = 0; h <= dtgqueformat.RowCount - 2; h++)
{
string avl_subject = dtgqueformat[8, h].Value.ToString();
string avl_chapter = dtgqueformat[9, h].Value.ToString();

I am working on uses the ThreadPool class and specifically the QueueUserWorkItem method to launch its background tasks. I am however having an issue related to SqlConnection timeouts. My error is this: "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached."
This code is using all available ThreadPool threads because it is processing nearly 100,000 items, each on a threadpool thread, and updating an SQL database. So my question is this? Has anyone ran into a similar problem or could shed some light on a resolution to this issue? In testing, if I use the threadpool. setmaxthreads function and give it a value of 100 (to match the default Sql connection pooling count) then all runs just fine, but much to slow to process this much data.

My application requires a user to log in and allows them to edit a list of things. However, it seems that if the same user always logs in and out and edits the list, this user will run into a "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired." error. I've read a comment about it possibly caused by uncommitted transactions. And I do have one going in the application.

Sometimes when my server is down or busy, I get an error saying "connection timeout" while connecting to MySQL. But with the error the program also crashes. My question is how can I prevent crashing, it would be better to show a msgbox when this happens. (visual basic 2010)here is a screenshot of the error
I use this,
Dim connStr As String = "Database=mydatabase;" & _
"Data Source=datasrc;" & _

How do you actually handle connection Timeout to the database.Given a scenario where you are processing data half way through and the database crashed . So your connection between the database and your application would be broken. Most likely throw an exception error if u handle exceptions.What are your suggestions or your preferred way of handling such scenarios.

provide an example of a client server app using the System.Net.Sockets class that:
(a) supports multiple client connections
(b) that implements some sort of command-response timeout feature (by that I mean, once a client connects the server sends the client a message [e.g. Message A] and waits without blocking communication with other clients for a response. If a response is not received within a defined period it tries again perhaps and if there is still no response then it disconnects the client. If a response is received then it sends another message [e.g. Message B] and so on....Whilst this is going on the server must be able to accept connections from other clients).
If anybody has done something like this before and is willing to share their knowledge I'd be grateful. I've been trying for ages to get the timeout feature working correctly to no avail. I haven't posted what I have already because frankly it's a mess. I tried an ArrayList of timers (one for each client) that I started and stopped as messages were sent and received, but the timer elapsed event kept firing after I thought it should have stopped which may have something to do with the various threads involved with the asychronous communication I was trying to use (I really dont know).
It's really the server end that I'm having problems with because the client app only has to deal with messages coming from a single source. At this stage I don't care if it's done using synchronous or asychronous communication. I've trawled the web for every example I can find and but I can't find one that implements this kind of command-response timeout with multiple clients - i.e. most of them just show how to listen out (server) and connect (client) and how to send a message, i.e. there's no sequence of messages or timeouts.

Sometimes my MySQL-commands hangs forever without throwing any exception. I've tried setting both command- and connection timeout for my connector, but it still hangs sometimes.Does it exist some kind of timeout block? Like, if the command hasn't been executed within X seconds, then continue.

Both of these properties have a default value of 30 seconds but I am setting them to something much shorter (8) and my application does not seem to recognize the timeout. Even if I allow the default value of 30 seconds to elapse I still am waiting on the timeout. I am trying to use the connecttimeout to notify my client application that the remote sql server is not available before I try and execute a sql transaction.
I am not sure why this is not working though, the sqlexception for timing out has worked for me before and all I did was set a non-default property. The only change here is that this is a MDI type of project, which shouldn't matter.

I have a general question regarding best practices for exception handling. I have a class library that uses structured error handling. The functions in the library generally perform some mathematical calculations and all return a boolean value indicating whether an exception occured or not (i.e. exception occured = true, no exception = false). The actual calculated result in the function is returned as a ByRef parameter.
Anyway the input variables for my calculations are all passed to the funtions as parameters. I perform some basic checks on these inputs (e.g check that an input is not negative etc) as part of the function code. The next stage is where im unsure of the best way to do things. Using the example i just mentioned, if an input parameter is negative, I can either throw an exception such as "ArgumentOutofRange", or i can simply show a messagebox with some info about what happened. Either way i do it the function will return true. At the moment i am throwing an exception, but on reading the "Best practices for exception handling" it is recommended you dont throw an exception for things that can be checked programatically because of "performance/overhead issues".
I'm a little confused by what they mean by this. What kind of overhead are they talking about? Slower program? More disk space required? More memory required? When my functions return true, the calling methods basically drop everything and stop calculations (exit sub), so im not sure that the overhead issues they are talking about are as important to me. It seems easier and neater to throw an exception and utilize some global error strings and pass some parameters rather than copy and paste messagebox.show() all the time, and modify the text to suit the situation. Another argument for me would be that both methods of exception handling utilize a messagebox, which stops code execution until the user does something. So i cant see the issue with the performance overhead.

for the program I am creating I want the computer to check if the configuration file has been created or not. I wrote this function to do that but I don't how to handle a file exception. Here's my code currently but obviously it returns an error if the configuration file doesn't already exist. So how do I add a check for an exception?

I initially posted this in the wrong forum. I need help getting this to run properly. I'm trying to construct a fractions calculator. In order to complete it, I need to do it like this:Using Select Case statements, four Function procedures should be called based on the operation selected. Each Function procedure will calculate the correct operation and return the Decimal value to the calling procedure. The original procedure will print the result.
Now, the result should be calculated to the hundreths place and the input values should be validated by a Try-Catch Block.And of course, I've been having trouble with how to do this. I've attempted many times and this is what I have so far:

I have been using VB6.0 to create database-driven Apps. With VB6.0, I could Dimi recordsets to read/write data from/into database tables. I could use the read data to validate textbox controls on the Windows Forms. But I when I upgraded VB6.0 Apps to VS 2008, I had problems with PowerPacks not found, Exceptional Errors etc.Most of all the problems I have experienced are:
- Overload Resolution failed because no accessible 'item' accepts this number of arguments.
- Error Code -2146825023
- Exception Snapshot - {"Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal."}
- Interop Errors[code]

Currently to check if a file is in use (before attempting to move or send it by FTP etc) we try and open it with exclusive right and trap the System.IO.IOException that would occur if anotehr process is reading or writing the file.
However - how can we do this without the bad paractice of using an exception handler for unexceptional process flow?

Good, detailed resources or books for best-practices on exception handling? I am looking to dive into a much deeper understanding of it, and am finding it hard. All the books I see over .NET, ASP.NET, etc. place little emphasis or detail on exception handling.
I am currently testing out a 3-tier ASP.NET application, with a presentation layer, business logic layer, and data layer, and want to know more about exactly when to throw errors, when to catch them, what layer to do them in, etc.
I don't want a simple google search on ".NET exception handling" and then having you post the first couple of links. I would like you to respond if you have quality, known resources that you have used or have found.

I use the following code to access a VSS item:
Dim sItem As String = "$/MyVssProject/InexistentFile.txt"
Dim oItem As SourceSafeTypeLib.VSSItem = Nothing
Try
[Code]....
The problem I face is when I try to get an instance to a file that doesn't exist in the VSSDB, thus leading to a COMException, which basically wouldn't be of a problem (I would expect). In fact the exception occurs, but instead of proceeding with the catch code, the debug cursor stays on the line "oItem = m_oSourceSafe.VSSItem(sItem)", showing a dialog with title "COMException crossed a native/managed boundary.
From here the execution doesn't proceed, until I change the content of sItem to an existing file.
Why does the exception not get caught, and how can I achieve it?
