Sql Server - Provider Factory Command Timeout - How To Set It

Feb 4, 2011

I am having a problem with a SQL server query giving a timeout error. I read about setting the timeout value of the command object but in my DAL, I do not see how to do that. Here is how I create the command object

Public Sub Init()
If ConnString = "" Then
Select Case ConnStringID

Sockets Command-response Timeout?

Jul 1, 2010

provide an example of a client server app using the System.Net.Sockets class that:

(a) supports multiple client connections

(b) that implements some sort of command-response timeout feature (by that I mean, once a client connects the server sends the client a message [e.g. Message A] and waits without blocking communication with other clients for a response. If a response is not received within a defined period it tries again perhaps and if there is still no response then it disconnects the client. If a response is received then it sends another message [e.g. Message B] and so on....Whilst this is going on the server must be able to accept connections from other clients).

If anybody has done something like this before and is willing to share their knowledge I'd be grateful. I've been trying for ages to get the timeout feature working correctly to no avail. I haven't posted what I have already because frankly it's a mess. I tried an ArrayList of timers (one for each client) that I started and stopped as messages were sent and received, but the timer elapsed event kept firing after I thought it should have stopped which may have something to do with the various threads involved with the asychronous communication I was trying to use (I really dont know).

It's really the server end that I'm having problems with because the client app only has to deal with messages coming from a single source. At this stage I don't care if it's done using synchronous or asychronous communication. I've trawled the web for every example I can find and but I can't find one that implements this kind of command-response timeout with multiple clients - i.e. most of them just show how to listen out (server) and connect (client) and how to send a message, i.e. there's no sequence of messages or timeouts.

Set The Timeout For The Execution Of A Set Of Statements When Using The SQL Server SMO Libraries?

Jul 25, 2011

I have the following bit of code that is timing out when I pass it a long running set of SQL statements. I'm using the Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo library from SQL Server 2008.

Using cn As SqlConnection = GetConnection(_destinationCNS, True)
Dim smoServer As New Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Server(New ServerConnection(cn))

[Code]....

I'm having trouble figuring out where to declare that timeout duration. What object and property should I be setting the timeout duration for the statement execution, not the connection timeout. On the SQLCommand object there is a convenient CommandTimeout property but I'm not seeing anything like that here.

Can't Find The SQL Server Data Provider?

May 22, 2011

I'm trying to port an ASP.NET 4.0 data-driven app to a VB Express 2010 Windows Forms desktop app. The ASP.NET 4.0 app uses a SQL Server 2008 Express database and works fine. I can change/add/delete data in the db with the web app, and I can use SQL Server Management Studio to modify the database, but when I try to establish a connection to the same database with the "Add new connection" wizard in VB Express 2010, it tells me that it cannot find the SQL Server Data Provider .The SQL Server provider MUST be installed because otherwise the web app wouldn't work, right ?

Can't Register The Original Dll With Regsvr As The Server Is With A Hosting Provider?

I am trying to use a COM dll referenced from a vb.net project. Everything works fine when I reference the interop inside the IDE but when I publish the file in bin folder on my server I get:

Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {A440BD76-CFE1-4D46-AB1F-15F238437A3D} failed due to the following error: 80040154.

I can't register the original dll with regsvr as the server is with a hosting provider and I thought the point of interops was to be able to use old COM dlls without having to register them

Convert Excel Date To Sql Server Date Time Format Using ACE Provider?

Jun 24, 2011

I am attempting to import data in a batch from an Excel Worksheet to a Sql Server database. Everything works except for the one date field in the spreadsheet. The date returned is off by four years from the value in the spreadsheet. Example: The Excel sheet has a date 10/24/2010 14:18, but when I look at the column in my query, the date is 10/23/2006 2:18. This pattern, 4 years and 1 day earlier, is repeated for every row in the worksheet.

The Excel column comes to me as a custom type, formatted m/d/yyyy h:mm. I receive this from an outside vendor and having them change the column is not going to be my simplest solution.

For what it's worth, the relevent part of the query is:

Select [Date Created] From MyWorksheet

I have been searching for a good code example that will place a small server program on my server and then allow me to use a client on my pc that will tell the server program to run a batch file on the server.

I thought this would be simple... I am finding it not that easy.

We have a server that users need to execute a command on however we do not want them to have login rights to the server so this will allow them to execute the batch file without having to log in.

The formulas need to be saved somehow, and being read later. I need to debug the formulas written, so I need to be able to see and understand them. The formulas used are quite specialized and specific (actuarial formulas). Adding new formulas (functionality) must be done in fast and maintainable way.

A problem arised where I received and unhandled exception error and just clicking on the continue button, the main process continued to run. Now I also found that within the child task I was having a file conflict error and as the tasks run as separate .exe i was under the impression that everything would have been thread safe. So for the first issue here is the task creation in the main process..GProcess is a complete project on its own consisting of 6 classes. This is added as a class library reference to the main process class form1

Public Class Form1
