DB/Reporting :: Secure Data From DBA?
Nov 14, 2011
I'm developing a VB.Net and SQL Server 2005 Express application.Q: How to encrypt string values in the database to secure them from the one using my software and from DBAs (people who have access to the DB Server)? Here is what I tried:First, I used a Symmetric Encryption provided by the .Net Framework. But I noticed that I could not make partial searches (LIKE keyword). So, this is not working.
Then, I used a logic similar to the ROT13 to hide text. Although this logic works fine from VB.Net, once data has been stored in the database, the logic fails to decrypt data correctly. After some tries, I thought that the reason the logic failed was the Collation of the database (I do not know much about Collation topic).So, the first way doesn't allow partial searches, and the second way is not secure and also does not work because of the Collation or maybe another reason.I want to encrypt data. I've successfully hidden the schema by giving meaningless names to tables and columns.

I have a design question about parsing data in Silverlight. I need to allow my users to validate their csv data (they paste ten rows into a textblock), but I am not sure if I should attempt to do it on the client side where I don't have access to the textfileparser class or send the data to a webservice for validation. If I send it to a webservice how do I ensure the data is secure?

I am interested in making a simple budget program that retrieves current transactions from my bank account and categorizes them appropriately. Is the proper way to do this:
1)Automatically log into the website
2)Read and parse the data
3)Place in correct category?
Is there anything special I would need to do when handling the login/password or should I just do this manually?I'm assuming that is how popular prgrams like Quicken do it.

What would be the best way of storing data securely away from users. What I have is a stack of files that get downloaded by the program, at the moment they COME encrypted, and stored in a temp location. Now where would be the be place to store them, and how would I store them? The program reads normal unencrypted files but in order for me to open them at the moment I nee to decrypt them in the temp folder and open them from there.This is bad because anyone could find the temp folder and simply copy out all the unencrypted files.Opening the files and then decrypting the bytearray is out of the question because the program only takes a filename as a option.

I'm just starting to really get into JSON as a tool for my sites. I was showing my friend how I am calling a WS and returning the data, and he asked me about security of passing JSON data to and from a web service as he saw the data from the "POST" (via Firebug). Many of our public facing sites deal with member information and contain PHI.
Can I encrypt the JSON data and then unencrypt it? Is that a good way to go about it to ensure a layer of protection? Or is there another "better/right" way of doing it? Or are his concerns unfounded? how to encrypt or secure the JSON data when needed? Just trying to gather as much knowledge as possible before I go down a path that won't work for the company.

I would like to know the best, or standard, way to accomplish real-time client updates in a small multi-user application using an access data table as a data source.Specifically, this application will be used by 3-4 people. It uses a datatable which is filled on form load and bound to a datagrid at design time. The datatable is stored on a shared drive. The data table on the shared drive is updated in two ways:
1) Users can update the datagrid which then updates the datatable on the shared drive via the data adapter's Update method.
2) A server application does some work on some text files, periodically updating the data table.
I need the clients to reflect the changes to the data table on the shared drive as closely to real-time as possible. I know that the data table stored in memory on the client is disconnected from the data table on the shared drive, so I must query again to get the updates.
1) Is there an alternvative model I can use which is connected, and which will automatically reflect the updates in the data table on the shared drive?
2) If not, what is the best way to check for changes in the data table (so I can know when to call the data adapter fill method)? I am planning to poll the drive for a change to the .mdb file, raise an event and then fill the data adapter when the event is triggered. I am using this method successfully now to check for changes to a text file in another application, and I know how to implement it?

I have vb 2008 and I have RSLinx classic, and a Allen Bradley PLC. I knwo there is a way to have vb call through linx to the PLC, I just don't know how. There are about 90 different tags in the PLC I would like to have logged into a csv/excel file. My thought on doing this was to have a very simple vb program to just collect that data and every day at midnight have it save it to a excel file. My problem comes when I try to talk to linx, I have no idea how to get them to communicate. I am just looking for some ideas on how to get that to work. I have tried link...whatever, and it seems that was for vb 6.

I'm trying to bind data to a combo box but it does not appear to be working. I've setup the DataSet and the DataSetBindingSource and all this appears to be working, within the form design I can expand the little arrow in the ComboBox control and preview the data. This appears to be working but when the application is run, nothing appears in the drop down box.
I have the following code in place:
Code:
cmbSelectCompany.DataSource = ContactsDBDataSet.Company()
cmbSelectCompany.DisplayMember = "CompanyName"
cmbSelectCompany.ValueMember = "CompanyName"

This error has me completely baffled. There is no indication (that I ca FinD as to what field won't handle the information. Heres the situation:I am using an Accees query to insert a new record in a table with 49 fields. Of these fields, 1 is an integer, 7 are booleans and the other 41 are text fields. The text fields represent either Time of Day or a Timespan.
My field sizes are:
For time of day 8 digits(example 08:00 AM)
For a time span 5 digits(example 03:30) I will never exceed 2 digits for
hours
I have checked every field in the dtatbase and they are all as noted. I am at a loss as to how to proceed.

I will try and explain my problem as simply as I can
I have an Oracle database (external app) that contains a number of tables that I need to get data from, however I also have an SQL database that contains a number of tables that my app is using.
e.g. Oracle Table name PD_112
Structure:
CODE:
What I want to do is get all the data from the Oracle table to display in a list control however I want the values in the DISP_ID column of the Oracle table to be change to the corrosponding DESC values from the DispTbl e.g. 5 from the Oracle table would display Piping instead of 5.
I know how to do this if both the tables where in one database system e.g. Oracle or SQL, however I am not sure the best why to do this when the tables are in 2 different data sources.
Below is the code for doing this in the same datasource:
Code:
I am using VB.Net 2005, just for info

I am working on what appears to be a very simple application but have a problem that I can't seem to get around. Using Visual Basic 2008 and an Access database. My application starts with only 3 text boxes and using the Data Wizard it works fine. I want to expand it to give the user a way to select an individual record to review so I dragged a ListBox on to the form onto the form, filled the DataSource and DataMember properties and When I run the program I click on one of the items in the List Box and the proper record fills the Text Boxes.

I have an Access database with a table called Events.I created a new VB.net 2008 project and created a MicrosoftReportViewer control. I also added a "Report" component (which created a .rdlc file).I am easily able to drag things from my Access database I added to the data sources onto the report. However, one part of the report I would like to add data to a Matrix that I calculated with VB (ie it is not in the database). The database has a list of names and a bunch of times associated with each name. and then I calculate some fancy stuff based on those times. I would like the matrix to be a list of names (from the database) on the rows, a list of dates (which I specify in the code) on the columns, and the data of the matrix I also calculate.

Is there any way to do this in a single row?

I would like to return the data in a database query as an array, but the problem is, Im having trouble working out how to do it, here is how I would like the data to be returned:
array (
---> 1
---> ---> 1
---> ---> ---> fieldname
[code]....
I could create a multi dimentional array, but the results could range from 2 rows, to 2000 rows, I looked into redim, but you can only redim the last dimention, I would need to the first and second, but not the last.

Ive got a web page so that the users select a day from the calendar and the date is input to a text box, the format is dd/mm/yyyy, it is the same format in the database table.
I want to select the data from the database when it is = the date in the text box but it is retrieving data in mm/dd/yyyy format. My sql is:
SELECT Booking.Date, Booking.RoomNo, Booking.Lesson, [NoComps] - " & students & " AS diff FROM Rooms INNER JOIN Booking ON Rooms.RoomNo = Booking.RoomNo WHERE booking.Date= #" & txtdate.Text & "# AND booking.Lesson = '" & lessonlist.SelectedValue & "' AND booking.Type IS NULL
how can i make sure it retrieves the data using the correct date format?

I'm writing an application to mimic a cash machine, I have a Form1 on which the user enters their PIN and chooses their card no. from a drop down box.The accountID is passed to Form2 and I know this is successfully seen by displaying it in a simple message box.A data adapter and dataset are used for this to the cards table.However, what I then require is within Form2 to retrieve the balance from that accountID in table Accounts, another data adapter and dataset have been created for this under Form2.I'm trying to get the balance into another variable, and I have written this as follows: [code]I would expect the result of this to be e.g. 100.00 but instead I am getting a response of "There is no row at position 0".

I have been having trouble finding a good way to do this. Basically what I need to do is take a query from a SQL Server Database and place it into a DataTable (or an array) for manipulation. I've got the connection and everything working, but none of the methods I've tried so far seem to work very well.I need it to compare data with an uploaded CSV file and post on a website.
