Secure Program Data Encryption?

What would be the best way of storing data securely away from users. What I have is a stack of files that get downloaded by the program, at the moment they COME encrypted, and stored in a temp location. Now where would be the be place to store them, and how would I store them? The program reads normal unencrypted files but in order for me to open them at the moment I nee to decrypt them in the temp folder and open them from there.This is bad because anyone could find the temp folder and simply copy out all the unencrypted files.Opening the files and then decrypting the bytearray is out of the question because the program only takes a filename as a option.

I am using a slightly modified version of this code. to create a mission critical application. That files that will be encrypted are very important. This has to be done from scratch because there are some other things that has to be done along with this. How secure is this? Its impossible to crack this encryption right? [Code]

I am trying to find some source code that is reputable such as code created by Microsoft or a similar entity that has released the source code for AES 128 encryption in the latest VB .net framework. My understanding of encryption methods is sufficient though, I am not an expert on the subject. The following source code [URL] on the MSDN network works very well in VB though with the advent of more secure AES encryption, I would like to be more prudent by using a more secure method. Unless someone can prove or explain that this source code is at a level of a "bank standard encryption" or better I would like to be pointed in the right direction of more secure code or advice from experts.

Is there a way to encrypt/decrypt text (string form) in VB.net using another string as a key? Meaning, if one user encrypts using this key, the other user needs to decrypt using the same key?I do NOT mean public and private key encryption or anything of the sort.If not, what is the second best way to encrypt/decrypt data without public/private keys?I want to make a simple way to send messages securely.

I've been trolling for a long time now and have decided to register as I finally have some time to start jumping into VB. The last time I coded VB, the current version was VB 4. I've been out of programming for a good while now and considered myself a beginner (tutorial example coder haha).
My question is: Where is a good place to start learning VB.NET?
I know it's an often asked and answered question - but let me give you a bit more information so more specialized replies might be given.
I'm in INFOSEC/COMSEC and would like to (eventually) develop a program that contains a DB of information that is read by the application and saves input information into a DB (encrypted) as well. The program will be a 800-53 C&A control assessment program; used for tracking system compliance for federal information systems. I would like to be able to develop such a tool to make my life easier at work instead of using Excel spreadsheets to track everything.
I would like to learn:
- Input / Output methods and validation (for secure coding)
- Read/Write DB Encryption (RSA or other 128-bit) for user input information
- Ability to generate PDF reports from the primary keys and data sets from the above DB
My goal is to create a program that allows a user to install the program, setup a 'master' account that a serial/key has been generated for - that master account is then allowed to create new projects (progress saved in DB). A project asks the user certain questions pertaining to information systems and takes the input and saves it into the DB (encrypted). When the assessment is completed, I would like the program to be able to generate a PDF report from the DB (from a layout template I created).

I am currently working on a simple data encryption program in VB 2008 express. Basically, I want the user to be able to select any file type and the program will read the data and store it in a text box. The user would then input a key, push the encrypt button and the program would XOR each byte of data with each character from the key and store the data in the third text box. I have a design question about parsing data in Silverlight. I need to allow my users to validate their csv data (they paste ten rows into a textblock), but I am not sure if I should attempt to do it on the client side where I don't have access to the textfileparser class or send the data to a webservice for validation. If I send it to a webservice how do I ensure the data is secure?

I'm developing a VB.Net and SQL Server 2005 Express application.Q: How to encrypt string values in the database to secure them from the one using my software and from DBAs (people who have access to the DB Server)? Here is what I tried:First, I used a Symmetric Encryption provided by the .Net Framework. But I noticed that I could not make partial searches (LIKE keyword). So, this is not working.
Then, I used a logic similar to the ROT13 to hide text. Although this logic works fine from VB.Net, once data has been stored in the database, the logic fails to decrypt data correctly. After some tries, I thought that the reason the logic failed was the Collation of the database (I do not know much about Collation topic).So, the first way doesn't allow partial searches, and the second way is not secure and also does not work because of the Collation or maybe another reason.I want to encrypt data. I've successfully hidden the schema by giving meaningless names to tables and columns.

I am interested in making a simple budget program that retrieves current transactions from my bank account and categorizes them appropriately. Is the proper way to do this:
1)Automatically log into the website
2)Read and parse the data
3)Place in correct category?
Is there anything special I would need to do when handling the login/password or should I just do this manually?I'm assuming that is how popular prgrams like Quicken do it.

My idea is to have an input and an output text box. When the user presses a button the program will encode what is in the input text box and output it into the output text box.I also want to encrypt it with a secret key where the user enters a letter or set of letters into a separate text box which will effect the output. Most of programs use Rijndael as algorithm, but I don't want using this class. I searched MSDN for AES classes, and I found AESCryptoServiceProvider, but I don't know how to use it.

I'm just starting to really get into JSON as a tool for my sites. I was showing my friend how I am calling a WS and returning the data, and he asked me about security of passing JSON data to and from a web service as he saw the data from the "POST" (via Firebug). Many of our public facing sites deal with member information and contain PHI.
Can I encrypt the JSON data and then unencrypt it? Is that a good way to go about it to ensure a layer of protection? Or is there another "better/right" way of doing it? Or are his concerns unfounded? how to encrypt or secure the JSON data when needed? Just trying to gather as much knowledge as possible before I go down a path that won't work for the company.

I was board making web browsers and OS so, I tried making an Encryption/Decryption program. I surfed the net and found a source code. But, after doing everything, I debug it, click the encrypt btn and nothing happens. I though the encrypting is a slow process. The thing is the process should be immediate cause I downloaded this web browser called 'Areo Pack'. It comes with a few other program and one of them in an Encryption/Decryption program. I tried it and it was done in a few seconds. I tried opening the encrypted file with notepad and I see a text file with Chinese, Japaneses, Korean, etc.

What I've decided to start working on is pretty much a personal project but something I may use in my UNI course in due time. I'm creating a security program with a set of access codes (yes I am a bit of a star trek fan) - 4 in total to be exact. I want to be able to use an Encrypted key file in form of a simple notepad created text file to update the codes at any due time. All I'm looking to do is write the access codes to the text file (say for a friend to use the program), Encrypt the file through the program and be able to also decrypt to obtain the new access codes on demand also via the same program. Once decrypted the codes can be read and verified if the user has entered each one correctly. I could hard code the access codes into the program but would rather do it the way I've thought of.
Back in the days of the old VB6 there was a simple method but for some reason that doesnt work any more. What I guess I'm looking to do is have 4 text fields where 4 digit access codes are typed into, have the program take them and encrypt each one is then written to the text file. Hoping that will make it a bit clearer what I'm trying to achieve as I think I made it sound like I want to encrypt the text file after the info has been written to it, which is of course one option so wouldn't mind know how to do that too!

I recently made a simple pseudo-encryption program that changes each character into another. It is capable of encrypting and decrypting a string. This can also be done to any text file as well. The characters range from ASCII 32-254 (This on it's own may be an issue because of #127 being DEL).
Because I believed my own coding may be at fault, I attempted this with Triple Des with identical results.For Triple Des, the requirements for en/decryption was:
Encrypt: String to Byte
Decrypt: Byte to String
And to change them either direction, I used UTF8. I also attempted ASCII and UTF32, but I don't know what I should do. I am considering dropping this but I want to learn problems like this because I am currently in college and haven't started my core classes for programming yet and want the head start.
The point where I have come into a problem is attempting to do this to another file type like an image. I looked at the results from encrypting then decrypting and the results were similar, but it seems file encoding must be the culprit.

i am writing an application that will need to store less than about 1mb of data. this data will be read and edited by the user. this data will be very simple ascii data. the application is in vb.net on a windows-form. the data will be stored locally on the person's computer.i have several questions.what kind of encryption method should i use to store the data? the user wants something that is not too powerful, but not too simple either.how should i store the data? why not just write it to some file and encrypt it using some medium encryption method?is application settings data encrypted? perhaps i can store it that way? is it suitable to store about 1mb in application setting data? how would i do this? which variable would i use?

I have set up a method in vb.net and in xcode for encrypting a string using as far as i can tell the same parameters for an AES encryption.I've looked all over the place but cannot find information on whether they use the same encryption algorithm and settings.

What is best practice for securing DLL's for projects you are working on? Certain DLL's I am interested in developing will have data access layer (DAL) and business logic layer (BLL) functionality. There may be several apps that can eventually hit these DLL's to perform business specific functions. What is the best way to secure these DLL's so they can only be used by only creator's applications?Security for both blocking unauthorized use of the DLL's and security against possible decompilation are both desirable.
