I've been using DevExpress and CrystalReports for previous .NET versions. I'm wondering if there are any native reporting controls for .NET 4.0, so I could do away with the 3rd party ones.

I am trying to do a very simple demo - load data from an access database and let the user manipulate it with a DataGridView. Here's what I understand so far:1) Create an OleDbDataAdapter by passing it a query and a connection.2) Create a DataSet by calling .Fill() on the DataAdapter with a DataSet object and a name for the retrieved data.3) Attach the DataGridView to the DataSet using the .DataSource property of the DataGridView and the .Tables property of the DataSet.However, I was told there is a much easier way to do it now in vb2008 using TableAdapters.1) Create a DataTableAdapter ( I can't actually find this object -what is it called?)2) Use the Fill method on the DataTableAdapter to connect it to a DataSet3) Now anything the user does in the DataGridView can be saved simply by using TableAdapter.Update.

I just want to add a value from a textbox/variable and save it as a new record in a MS Access Database after a button click.
I've set up the database, set up the tables required.
From what I gather, I need to first link declare 'Imports System.Data' outside all the code. And also define a variable as a connection (Dim con As New OleDb.OleDbConnection) then access the database with "con.ConnectionString = "PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source = PathName").
What else do I need to include?

In Microsoft Access I use: Hours(time) minute(time) function to get current time hour and minute. I then use loop to add to the minutes until it ends in a 5 or 0 to round it up to the next 5 minutes. e.g. 13:43 rounded up to 13:45 I use IF statement to make sure the minute does not exceed 60 to start the hour. I want to use that time to add hours or minutes to easier e.g. add 15minutes, add 1 hour ect.

I have a self referenced table it contains Employee information, an employee reports to another employee, I've done this by including a field named ReportsTo as a foreign key that would be filled with the primary key. My first question is when using a strongly typed dataset how would I insert the first record without raising an error. the only solution that I could come up with is to insert an employee with the name NoOne and reports to himself i.e the employee number is the same as ReportsTo, this solution would be hardcoded in my program and only works when there is no records in the table. This is ok as long as I don't delete every employee from the table and try to insert new employees, in this case my insert will fail because the NoOne employee number is "1" and this would violate the index. this case calls for reseting the index each time I delete all the employees.

I have been following a tutorial in a book Vb 2005 Jumpstart Ch 4..Anyway I have followed the books code exactly and the program runs.It connects to Amazons web service and allows the user to search and display books, the application also allows the user to save the titles that they wish by clicking an Add Title button, when the user does this the current focus title is saved to the database and can be viewed off line.When I hit the add title the record gets saved as I can hit the catalog button which opens a new form with a datagrid that has all the titles I just saved in it!! But when I close the app and run it again the catalog is gone?? back to no records again?Now ive never worked with SQL databases before and this is me just having a go at .Net so I have no idea whats wrong or where to look.[code]

i have a form with 6 tabs on 3 of which have controls, spent a lot of time putting it all together, set it up to link to a SQL DB, all working fine,Until....at the bottom of the form (in design mode) you have the icons that say BindingSource1 and CustomerDataSet1 etc.Well i accidently deleted some, now when i run the form i got an error saying that it couldnt load, i see the code is there but the form is just the blank form you get when you start(the form is still the same name and if i click view code all the code is there, but on the form are no controls, no tabs ... its all gone....(i only deleted a binding source ) i dont understand where its all gone.
when you click on the undo it didnt put the deleted items back (and i am not sure which one there were) now that the form has gone back to normal there are no Binding sources at the bottom I opened the designer code, i see the names of all the missing items, e.g. CustomersDataSet1 and TblCustomers1BindingSource1 e.t.c do i just re add those back to the bottom of the form and then the main controls will re appear?
I have looked through the code and re added the binding sources and adapters that are referenced in the code along with the Binding navigator, if i run it the form is still blank.I have tried to add the controls back and when i do it adds it as e.gTblCustomers1BindingSource2 if i try to rename them to the name they should be ie. TblCustomers1BindingSource1 it says it already existsI am using VB 2008 Pro?

I'm writing a database program that will take various information from the user via text boxes, then save them as a *.txt file. I've already figured out the majority of that business. However, I'm having trouble programming a ListBox.
The ListBox needs to accept three pieces of information from 3 Text Boxes, then concantenate them when a button labeled 'Add' is pressed and scoot them to the ListBox (lstshowresults) while clearing the three boxes at the same time.

I am working on a Data Survey Project and first I have a few questions about the different types of databases, and second, I need help querying my tables that have relationships.
1. I need a database that is stand alone. It is just the back end for the program. Simply to hold all the data an employee gets while out on a job. So would I be better using access, or SQL Express? I have played with both, but I do not want a large redistribution to my user machines. When I compile and produce this app does the SQL Database still work without installing any SQL Technology? Or do they have to go in after they install my app, and install Express?
2.Overview: I suppose depending on the first question regarding the database, it might change this question a bit, but none the less...I have 4 tables( using Access at the moment) I will be generating Reports based on data in the database. I haven't gotten that far yet. *Project* is the table that holds all the details that pertain to the job and client. It has a "one-to-many" relationship to *Survey*. So for one customer there are going to be many Survey Records. *Project Type* also has a 1-to-many back to *Projects*. Parts is kind of an orphan, but is linked to the *Survey* table with a one to many. So there can be many parts for one survey. I wanted this table for a drop down box, so the user could just simply select what hardware he was using instead of typing all the names and parts.
So in VS 2008 using the Designers and related Query tools, how do I constrain the Survey Data to one Customer? I have one form that opens from a button that is "New Project" and then there are all the *project* fields listed, so the user fills out the info and hits accept and that opens a new form called "frmSurvey" I need to add some code to the accept button to check what type of project is selected from the frmNewProject and then run a select query based on that. How do I write query statements in the code section of the form, without using the Visual Database tools?
Ill stop here, and get these questions out of the way first. If I could just get a handle on how to use the data properly with different forms and different controls with my queries, that would be great.

In an attempt to learn VB I'm trying to build a database project for a friend's business. This db will be used to track customer information, predominantly for targeted marketing purposes. So far, the development has been slow (I'm still trying to adapt from VBA to VB), but its all starting to make sense now. I'm using two different forms for adding new customers and reviewing the information of existing customers, mainly because the database will grow by about 2,500 customers per year and we wanted to be able to search the records without returning every record when the forms load. Most of this works so far, but I'm having trouble with two issues.
When I open the new customer entry form, I want the form to automatically begin entering data without clicking the "Add New" button. The second problem involves the row ID from the database. It keep showing up as "-1", "-2" etc. The row ID records properly in the table, so no big deal. I have read that this problem is a bug in VB and that its nothing to worry about. However, down the road I will need to access the correct row ID from this same form in order to print out a report for the customer (as needed).
For what its worth here is the code I have so far:
Code:
'Update current record when the form closes
Private Sub frmNewCustomer_FormClosing(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.FormClosingEventArgs) Handles Me.FormClosing
Me.TblCustomersBindingSource.EndEdit()
Me.TblCustomersTableAdapter.Update(Me.dsNewCustomer.tblCustomers)

I have created a search form based on my SQL database to search for individual records based on 3 types of criteria. The form is up and running but I want to be able to add some more code. I have assigned Stored Procedure to each click event for each button. What I wantr to be able to do is after value is added to text box and button is clicked if there are no reults to display than a message box is displayed with adequate message detailing this. Also is it possible to add a count of records to the form. Once value has been enetered ij tyext box and stored procedure runs and fills dataset with required data can I display a box to show number of records from this search.

I have been working on a VB 2005 applications for the past week and now I'm not able to add a control to the form. I am trying to add controls to a Panel in a loop, but for some reason they are being added from the bottom up instead of top down.In a little test program I am running this
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
For i As Integer = 1 To 10[code]....
And this is the result I get ... the controls are added starting at the bottom. I need them to start at the top of the panel, with each new control being added under the previous one. If I remove the Dock statement, then the controls just get added on top of each other.

I am converting a VBA program to VB. I need to create controls at runtime as I don't want the user to be limited to the amount of information that they can input. I am converting this statement in vba:
Dim CF As CashFlowControl
CF = New CashFlowControl
CF.Cashflow = Form1.Controls.Add("Forms.Textbox.1", "Cashflow" & Cashflows.Count + 1, True)
With CF.Cashflow
.Left = Form1.Label2.Left
.Width = Form1.Label2.Width
.Top = Form1.Label2.Top + Form1.Label2.Height + (Form1.Label2.Height * Cashflows.Count) + 5
.Visible = True
.Text = 0
.Text = Format(CF.Cashflow.Text, "$#,##0.00")
End With
I have tried:
Dim txtbox As New TextBox
CF.CashFlow = Form1.Controls.Add(txtbox)
With CF.CashFlow
.Name = "CashFlow" & Cashflows.Count + 1
.Left = Form1.Label2.Left
.Width = Form1.Label2.Width
.Top = Form1.Label2.Top + Form1.Label2.Height + (Form1.Label2.Height * Cashflows.Count) + 5
.Height = Form1.Label2.Height
.Visible = True
End With
I've also tried:
CF.CashFlow = Form1.Controls.Add("vbtextbox","Cashflow" & Cashflows.count + 1)
With CF.CashFlow
.Left = Form1.Label2.Left
.Width = Form1.Label2.Width
.Top = Form1.Label2.Top + Form1.Label2.Height + (Form1.Label2.Height * Cashflows.Count) + 5
.Height = Form1.Label2.Height
.Visible = True
End With
I still get the little wavy underline under the text after the "Form1.Controls.Add" statement and the error says "Value of Type 'string' cannot be converted to 'system.windows.forms.control." I also get the error "Too many arguments to 'Public Overridable Sub Add(value as systems.windows.forms.control)"
What am I missing here? This seems to be the way it is done in all of the examples that I have found on this site.

In the helpfiles of Visual Studio 2008 I read control arrays are no longer supported. There is an example for the new situation but then you need to hard code the names of all the controls beforehand.I do not know how many controls I need, could be one or 5000 (think simple image browser). Is it still possible to create something like that or should I change to a different programming language like Phyton? At the moment I work around it by using a browser control and then manipulate the <img> tags but I'm puzzeld as to why this functionality was removed and if there's a solution to the problem.Another thing I don't understand is where the app goes when it's installed with 'Click once'. It dissappears completely, doesn't show up in 'Program Files', can not be found by the search function but it *is* somewhere because you can start it form the Start menu. However, I use data which is in a subfolder of the program folder, which I nor my program can find any more after the app is installed. The program runs but it can't find any place to put/get its data so in the end it doesn't work.
I work around it by *not* installing the program but have people just run it after unpacking the downloaded folder. This works great but I wonder how long this will be the case until Microsoft disables this possibility? I have no idea why they would, but I also have no idea why they did remove the functionality I mentioned above. I already changed to PHP and MySQL because I had to throw away my carefully built W2K+MSAccess image database a few years ago and after installing Vista Visual Studio 2005 was a goner. OK, I upgraded but then no control arrays any more and now they hide the apps when you install them? Why on earth would they do that?

I am trying to create and remove a series of controls programatically. The user will have a numeric updown to pick a number. The program will then create a bunch of duplicate controls based on whatever number they pick on the fly.
Public Class Form1
Private Sub NumericUpDown1_ValueChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles numberDebts.ValueChanged[code].....
The creation part works just fine.As the number is toggled upward a new label is created.However whenever I remove labels it acts very strangely.The first time I bring it down it works just fine. Then the next 3 do nothing but the 4th removes another line.I can also toggle back and forth and it will eventually remove the label. So for example.
Starts with 1 selected - 1 label visible (1)
Change to 2 - 2 labels visible (1-2)
Change to 3 - 3 labels visible (1-3)[code]....
If I toggle back and forth between 2 and 3 eventually label 4 will go away.I want only 1- my numeric up down value to be displayed and have everything else after that removed.
