I am trying to do a very simple demo - load data from an access database and let the user manipulate it with a DataGridView. Here's what I understand so far:1) Create an OleDbDataAdapter by passing it a query and a connection.2) Create a DataSet by calling .Fill() on the DataAdapter with a DataSet object and a name for the retrieved data.3) Attach the DataGridView to the DataSet using the .DataSource property of the DataGridView and the .Tables property of the DataSet.However, I was told there is a much easier way to do it now in vb2008 using TableAdapters.1) Create a DataTableAdapter ( I can't actually find this object -what is it called?)2) Use the Fill method on the DataTableAdapter to connect it to a DataSet3) Now anything the user does in the DataGridView can be saved simply by using TableAdapter.Update.

View 1 RepliesI have a dataset; I want to create an equivalent record set. What I really want to do is create the XML that a record set can load; I have no other use for the record set per se. I want to be able to load recordsets on other machines (which use VB6 ins of vb.net) with this data. I found some code that loops through the columns in the dataset and creates the fields in the record set; that's executing. However, the code given to open the record set fails with "incompatible or incorrect parameters" or some such. [Code] I can see that a recordset is a construct meant to bridge between running code and a data store of some sort, but in this case the data is "stored" in the dataset, not anywhere else. I want to put that data in the XML form that the recordset uses, so that other code that can only use recordsets (ins of datasets) will be able to read it.

i'm using an sql database, and on my application i load a listbox with data from table1. like:

I am using this code at the last line of my form load. I want the position 5,5 to have the cursor set at it. It works when then datagrid is already open:[code]However, when I use it on the form load, you can see that it was selected on the datagrid, but the cursor is set at textbox1...which happens to have the first tab order on the form, even though I have acceptstabs off. Can anyone tell me why this would happen? Basically, it is setting the cursor at the cell I want, but after the form loads, it jumps to textbox1 and highlights the text.
View 1 RepliesI'm working on a simple "sports management" game just to test out whether I could make an actual one some time in the future, but for the life of me I haven't been able to figure out how to save the contents of the datagridview. I want it to be saved in a format that doesn't require the user to have Access or any other program, so that the only thing users need are the .exe and the database file. Another question about the datagridview: How do I access the content on specific rows and columns of the datagridview? If I want TextBox1.Text to be whatever is written on Row 4, Column 2, how do I access that information?

i have a form with 6 tabs on 3 of which have controls, spent a lot of time putting it all together, set it up to link to a SQL DB, all working fine,Until....at the bottom of the form (in design mode) you have the icons that say BindingSource1 and CustomerDataSet1 etc.Well i accidently deleted some, now when i run the form i got an error saying that it couldnt load, i see the code is there but the form is just the blank form you get when you start(the form is still the same name and if i click view code all the code is there, but on the form are no controls, no tabs ... its all gone....(i only deleted a binding source ) i dont understand where its all gone.
when you click on the undo it didnt put the deleted items back (and i am not sure which one there were) now that the form has gone back to normal there are no Binding sources at the bottom I opened the designer code, i see the names of all the missing items, e.g. CustomersDataSet1 and TblCustomers1BindingSource1 e.t.c do i just re add those back to the bottom of the form and then the main controls will re appear?
I have looked through the code and re added the binding sources and adapters that are referenced in the code along with the Binding navigator, if i run it the form is still blank.I have tried to add the controls back and when i do it adds it as e.gTblCustomers1BindingSource2 if i try to rename them to the name they should be ie. TblCustomers1BindingSource1 it says it already existsI am using VB 2008 Pro?
In an attempt to learn VB I'm trying to build a database project for a friend's business. This db will be used to track customer information, predominantly for targeted marketing purposes. So far, the development has been slow (I'm still trying to adapt from VBA to VB), but its all starting to make sense now. I'm using two different forms for adding new customers and reviewing the information of existing customers, mainly because the database will grow by about 2,500 customers per year and we wanted to be able to search the records without returning every record when the forms load. Most of this works so far, but I'm having trouble with two issues.
When I open the new customer entry form, I want the form to automatically begin entering data without clicking the "Add New" button. The second problem involves the row ID from the database. It keep showing up as "-1", "-2" etc. The row ID records properly in the table, so no big deal. I have read that this problem is a bug in VB and that its nothing to worry about. However, down the road I will need to access the correct row ID from this same form in order to print out a report for the customer (as needed).

I am working on a Data Survey Project and first I have a few questions about the different types of databases, and second, I need help querying my tables that have relationships.
1. I need a database that is stand alone. It is just the back end for the program. Simply to hold all the data an employee gets while out on a job. So would I be better using access, or SQL Express? I have played with both, but I do not want a large redistribution to my user machines. When I compile and produce this app does the SQL Database still work without installing any SQL Technology? Or do they have to go in after they install my app, and install Express?
2.Overview: I suppose depending on the first question regarding the database, it might change this question a bit, but none the less...I have 4 tables( using Access at the moment) I will be generating Reports based on data in the database. I haven't gotten that far yet. *Project* is the table that holds all the details that pertain to the job and client. It has a "one-to-many" relationship to *Survey*. So for one customer there are going to be many Survey Records. *Project Type* also has a 1-to-many back to *Projects*. Parts is kind of an orphan, but is linked to the *Survey* table with a one to many. So there can be many parts for one survey. I wanted this table for a drop down box, so the user could just simply select what hardware he was using instead of typing all the names and parts.
So in VS 2008 using the Designers and related Query tools, how do I constrain the Survey Data to one Customer? I have one form that opens from a button that is "New Project" and then there are all the *project* fields listed, so the user fills out the info and hits accept and that opens a new form called "frmSurvey" I need to add some code to the accept button to check what type of project is selected from the frmNewProject and then run a select query based on that. How do I write query statements in the code section of the form, without using the Visual Database tools?
Ill stop here, and get these questions out of the way first. If I could just get a handle on how to use the data properly with different forms and different controls with my queries, that would be great.

I want to move my programs and the database to another computer and hard-disks. It looks to me as though I nearly have to re-create the controls and rewrite some of the code to make it so the programs still work after the move. At least with ODBC all I would change was the DSN definitions external to the programs. Is there an easy way to move or rename a database without loads of work?

This is an odd question but can I load custom controls from a directory? (e.g TestControl.dll) in my application at runtime instead of adding a com reference?The reason I am asking is that I have an application that is installed as an add-in for MS office. The entire interface is a panel that contains a user control. Initial installation is a bit involved so after the first install, I would like to use clickOnce to deploy updates by just supplying new user controls.

I used DAO and could check if the network table existed using a function that tried to assign a TableDef object to the table in question. If there was no error then I assumed that the table existed and the function returned true...Or it would error out and return false.I could then proceed with the copy or not as the case may be.I am converting the code to ADO.net and need to know how to check for a table. For example - I have a combobox on a form and I have put some code in its SelectedIndexChanged event. The problem is that I want this code to be executed *only* when the user clicks on an item in the combobox dropdown. Why is it then that it gets executed when the form first loads? And how do I stop this happening?
I used to use a "FormLoading" boolean to decide whether or not the code was executed but this surely shouldn't be necessary. Is there a better way?
I am currently wokring on a project, which is going to serve as an interface for accessing various documentation and reports. It is basically just a tabcontrol with a few pages that will be poppulated with buttons which will open the appropriate document.I am trying to allow administrative users the ability to add new, edit or remove buttons which all seems relatiively simple, but have run into the problem of how to persist the changes once they are made. View 2 RepliesI wrote last week about a problem with an MDI program that had a large number of forms (each with a large number of controls on it) that was "sluggish" in loading and in switching between the child forms.I've attached an example program in VS2008 (though the actual app is VB2010)Rather than show the hardware control application with all of the text fields, and picture boxes acting as indicators, I made a simple program to show the point. This is exaggerated as this just loads 2000 or so text boxes on a form. In the real app I have ~ 200 assorted controls per form of picture boxes, scroll bars, text boxes, labels etc. Also, there is a large full screen .jpeg as the back ground of each form. All are generated at run time and are placed on the form in the New call of each form. (as in the sample attached)main issue seems to be the methodology I use to switch between child forms. I make the current form .visible = false, and the next.visible = true. I have used this as it "keeps the place" on each page if the user has scrolled or is looking at one section of the form. When the next form .visible = true happens I see the controls added in a "machine gun" fashion instead of all at once.

View 2 RepliesI don't actually know if I can use any XML file as a database that I can edit and make some changes to it using vb.net 2008 and save them. Because I'm working aboard a war ship and we have a central automatic system to control all the internal communication using standard telephones. to reprogram the extinctions we used to have a MS DOS program and it's so old and now it's totally lost and not found and after a long searching I have found a file that could maintain the extensions and reprogram the system but it's an XML file.
