DB/Reporting :: Make SQL Default Back To Filling In Gaps And Only Count Higher If There Are No Gaps?
Oct 5, 2009
when setting a column to identity it will auto increment 1,2,3,4..however if you delete 4 & 5 and then insert another record it will go in as 6.If you do this a lot you end up with huge gaps in the numbers,is there any way to make SQL default back to filling in the gaps and only count higher if there are no gaps?I know I can do it in the application, or even a UDF, I just want to make sure I am not reinventing the wheel?

How to find the correct DashOffset and DashPattern to fill in the gaps with another color within a dashed line if the 1st DashPattern has an array of mixed values?
If the 1st array for a DashPattern is like this though?
myPen.DashPattern = New Single() {20, 15, 30, 45}

I am upgrading a system that has a Product Table with a Product No Field.This is a string field but most of the existing product Nos are numeric but all over the place.I want to provide a default numeric Product No when the Users are creating a new product record.All I can think of is to use the Identity Field [ProductID] and test to see if it has been used and if so keep incrementing to find the next free numerical, available No.A better solution would be to start at 1 and increment to find the first available but it looks to be several hundred records into the Table. how to find the first available number?

I have some reports that I use with the MS ReportViewer and I need to get a count of the physical pages (as opposed to logical page count) to use with a print dialog. I've implemented a workaround so the ReportViewer control displays the correct number of physical pages, but is there a way to get that value from the ReportViewer control? The only publicly accessible property gives the logical page count.

What I am trying to do basically is open an access query in a datagrid view and then be able to make changes to the datagrid and then save it back to the database.When I try to save:
Me.BindingSource.EndEdit()
Me.TableAdapter.Update(DataSet)
It says that update is not a member of the tableadapter... Why is that?

I am new to programming with vb2008 and I am trying to fill out a form on line. The form looks for keystrokes and keeps track of the number of characters typed. There are two elements on the form that use this method. The first area will allow me to fill in the data using the usual method of setting the attribute "value" of the field as the data I wish to insert. But the characters are not counted. The second area does not fill at all.The code for the fields are as follows.
<div id="fck_editor">
<input type="hidden" id="body" name="body" value="" style="display:none" /><input type="hidden" id="body___Config" value="" style="display:none" /><iframe id="body___Frame" src="/includes/js/fckeditor2.6.4/editor/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=body&Toolbar=Default" width="649" height="410" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>

Ok, so I have a small program I am building for my boss to keep track of workers at certain job sites. With the way the economy is going my boss wants to track who is showing up at specific sites (jobs) and try to even it out among all the employees - some are not working full time.
Anyway, I have two Access tables linked together with the main table being Employee Data. The second Table is Employee Jobs. Basically I have three forms. The main form on startup will show all of the employees in the company - this is basically a list of all added employees into the database (this is the second form - adding employee info). At a quick glance I would like to have the initial startup form, with grid - show employee info, show the number of jobs each employee has been assigned to. Would this be an SQL statement? How to I get a row count and post that back to the grid so it shows up on startup?

I use the following line of code within a single method to explicitly check and trust an SSL cert from the following host: MyTrustedCompany.com:
ServicePointManager.ServerCertificateValidationCallback = Function(obj As [Object], certificate As X509Certificate, chain As X509Chain, errors As SslPolicyErrors) (certificate.Subject.Contains("CN=MyTrustedCompany.com"))
No problem with the code -> works perfectly 100%.
The problem is, it is too far reaching. I thought its scope would only be within the method I decalred it, but apparently it is a Shared property on the 'ServicePointManager' object, and must then persist for the entire application, which I do not want.
The problem is later I am calling web services of mine, etc and getting the "Could not establish a trust relationship..." exception. This is because in the line of code above I check for the host name of an SSL cert specefic to that method. I quickly tested Returning 'True' from the callback so all certs would be trusted instead of checking for a specefic name (i.e. MyTrustedCompany) and subsiquent requests worked. This is how I know this callback assignment reaches father than that single method. Sure I could extend the callback to include all other certitificate names, but what I would rather do is set the 'ServerCertificateValidationCallback' back to its default behavior. Like the pseudo code below:
ServicePointManager.ServerCertificateValidationCallback = Nothing 'Default checking behavior
How do I remove the custom validation and set it back to its default behavior?

I am using VB.net 2003. I am working on a stand alone windows program that stores data in an Access database via ADO.net via MS jet 4.0 OLEDb. I have progressed to the point that I would now like to provide the end user the oportunity to back-up the data they have stored and re-install if they choose. I am envisioning a menu item for "maintenance" with sub-items for "back-up" and "restore"

I have an app written in vb2005 that allows users to search a sql database for a store name. Once a store is selected, it then presents the user with 12 different tabs, each with a DataGridView showing various bits of info about the store. It's a large and convoluted database, so I'm using stored proceedures to pull the data for each tab. Here's a sample of one of the subs that populates the tabs.[code...]
Now, this works just fine to populate the grids on the tabs, and the same code is copied into each of the subs that fill the grids (changing the stored proc, parameter and grid names, of course). The problem I'm having is how to move changes made to the data in the grid back into the database.
I have stored procs that do this (and the procs do work), I just can't seem to figure out how to trigger the stored proc when the user makes a change.
If it matters, there is only a grid on each tab, I did not use a binding source as I am trying to keep an abstraction layer between the data and the app. I did create a dataset, which is how I gain access to the stored procs, but I left the grids unbound and (as seen in my code) bind them at run time.

I am working on a very simple application in Visual Basic 2008 Express.
The program has a Listview where I display the "DisplayName" field, the user clicks on a name and this should fill 3 text boxes. The code is:
strSQL = "SELECT FName, LName, DisplayName FROM tStaff WHERE DisplayName=@DisplayName;"
Dim conn As New OleDbConnection(strConnString)
[Code]....
This produces the error "Parameter @DisplayName" has no defaul value"
The value of the variable "strDisplayName" is correctly captured.

Here is my case:I have a richtextbox called Rtb1 I have the text property for this control set to "ThreadAmountEdit=[Thread Amount]" This was set through the RichTextBox Tasks function, by clicking the control and selecting the little arrow in the top right corner. In working on my form, I edit the text "[Thread Amount]" of the rich text box to "45". What I need is to be able to reset Rtb1 back to default ("ThreadAmountEdit=[Thread Amount]")on button click.
I've tried: Rtb1.Refresh() which doesn't appear to do anything I've also tried Rtb1.ResetText() which completely clears the textbox.
