Oct 24, 2011
I've setup a TextWriterTraceListener which outputs the debug messages I've written to a file.This works fine however what I am trying to do know is output the content of this file to a textbox using a streamreader object.I originaly thought it may because I did not set the text file to allow read/write access so I changed this by setting the following:[code]

I am starting to learn reading and writing to textfiles. One quick problem. My code here
'Read is the variable that will read the kp.txt file"
Dim read As IO.StreamReader
read = IO.File.OpenText("C:2/kp.txt"[code].....
however when it is read into the listbox those 3 words appear on one line in listbox
How can i make it so that each line of the textfile is placed in each line on the listbox?

I have a txt file, that i want to read into my program. The problem is this:The textfile is a stats file for a game and looks like this:
Code:
ip:port wins username points
ip:port wins username points
ip:port wins username points
ip:port wins username points
ip:port wins username points
etc.
The main thing i want to do is sort these things out and then add to mysql database table that would have these columns:
Code:
ip authid wins username points
So what i wanna do is splitting this textfile data up and then adding everything to a mysql table.

I've a got a homework assignment that chooses one of four values in a list box, stores it in a text file. Secondly, on the display click event it should access the text file, read the line, store it in a variable and then display the totals in a text box. Works sort of fine except that it doesn't display the totals correctly. Code for both buttons is below. The variable are assigned in the mainform (Tried also in the display button and didn't change anything). The save button works fine and stores fine in the text file, it's just the reading that's the problem.
Private Sub saveButton_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles saveButton.Click
'save the new vote choices to a file
Dim votes As IO.StreamWriter
votes = IO.File.AppendText("votes.txt")
Dim voteSelected As String = CStr(commercialListBox.SelectedIndex)

I am making a Help-form for my application. A Help-form normally has a ListView on the left and a RichTextbox on the right. When you click on a Help topic in the ListView, the text in the RichTextbox is supposed to change accordingly. The text file is part of the application's resources.
I also asked the question on stackoverflow: [URL]

i know i have to use a loop to get each line of the textbox onto a newline of a textfile but i dont know how to figure out how many lines of text the user has entered into a textbox. I tryed using a try statment to loop until it errors, it seems to work sometimes but other times it only takes half of the textbox and adds it to the textfile. And if atmaweapon reads this, i tryed to make better names for variables. Here is my code,
Code:
Path = ("Meals" & ComboBox1.SelectedItem & "" & TextBox1.Text & ".txt")
File = New System.IO.StreamWriter(Path)
If ComboBox2.SelectedItem = "1" Then
[Code]....
how many line of text there are... im not so shure how good it is to run a loop tell it errors for a textfile, but its the only way i could think of.

I'm making a program which has 7 textboxes. I intend the program to be used for classes in school, so the text would be like 2D Art, Geology etc... whatever your classes are. I have figured out how to use the streamwriter to take the text in the textboxes and write them to a .txt file however, my issue is with loading the text from the .txt file back into the textboxes. I did figure out how to write it so that all the text in the .txt file is loaded back into textbox1 but I have 7 textboxes... Here's the coding for the Load button:
Private Sub Button46_Click_1(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button46.Click
Dim MainWindowLog As String = "V:Users(O.o)~(--_--)~(o.O)DocumentsVisual Studio

I'm making a personal program (So it doesn't have to look nice or be super sleek) that is basically an alarm clock. I set the time and date, it writes it to a text document then it reads it from the text document back into another textbox that is hidden and compares it to label1.text which is my system time and date.the problem is, I have it so that I can add multiple dates in one document so when I enter one it'll do as so [code]how can I make the program read 1 line, wait for it to match the label, (I already make it display a message box) and then after that is all done, go to the next line and wait for it to match. etc etc.

I'm having trouble reading in the file and populating the textboxes accordingly. After loading the file (I think that is) nothing is being populated in any of the textboxes listed below. Basically I'm not sure if the file is being read or not.
If OpenFileDialog2.ShowDialog() = DialogResult.OK Then
If My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists("path_to_file") Then
Dim ioFile As New System.IO.StreamReader("path_to_file" + "filename")
TextBox1.Text = ioFile.ReadLine() 'Adds the first line
TextBox2.Text = ioFile.ReadLine() 'Adds the second line
TextBox3.Text = ioFile.ReadLine() 'Adds the third line
TextBox4.Text = ioFile.ReadLine() 'Adds the fourth line
TextBox5.Text = ioFile.ReadLine() 'Adds the fifth line
End If
End If

I can retreive all items in my notepad but when I am adding them up in my listbox, and trying to print them in the console. I can only display two strings. I don't know why. My string is a combination of a name, space & score. ex: "luke 300". That is the pattern of all strings per line in my text file. I am separating the name and the score using space as the indicator. When ever a space is found, string before and after the space is retrieved and added to the listbox
Here is my
scorelist = New ArrayList
reader1 = My.Computer.FileSystem.OpenTextFileReader(My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "scores.txt")

I've got the following txt file:
[code]...
Now I want that presented in the listbox with the semicolon and it should be aligned per column so that the numbers, the names, the prices and the quantity are exactly aligned per column.If I read the file like this:
[code]...
Then the semicolon is not presented in the listbox and I don't have any alignment per column. As the names of the woods are not equally long the prices and the quantity are not aligned directly below each other...
My questions are:
1) How to add the semicolon in the listbox as seperator of the columns
2) How to align the 4 columns in the listbox (as I have an array Item(3) )
Later on I need to be able to change the quantity (last column) from 0 to > 0 (that's why I have to use an array)

I am currently developing a program that can read text to audio, I know there are already thousands of software out there but it is not in my country language. Now I have found a way to invent a similar program with high quality audio, text exchanges to wav file, and I made every word a wav file that corresponds to the word, I could type text into the textbox then I could read the corresponding wav file.
my problem is being able to highlight text while reading the text box, for example: type in the textbox: HELLO MY NAME IS JOHN, NICE TO MEET YOU. WHAT'S YOUR NAME! when read and mark the same time, if there are similar words in the previous line, then jumps back word marks and ignore next word. In our examples there are two words like: NAME, when read and mark it read and select the right until it reaches the next NAME and instead marked the first, then continues. If there are several words that are in the text, always highlights of the first word.
in directory C:Audio there is those word as wav file EXAMPLE: HELLO.wav + MY.wav + NAME.wav and so on. I do not want the mark back, i want it to select those who are not selected.

I've been writing a weight program for flooded pressure vessels and I'm having trouble retrieving the data from the text files I've been saving. I know how to write the data to the text file, but retrieving it with OpenFileDialog is not so easy for me.The user has individual text boxes that they input strings or numbers into and when they save the file, each text box input is written to one line in the text file. For example, the first text box is for the username, therefore the first line of text that is saved is the person's name, the second text box is the customer, thus the second line in the text file is the customer name, and so on.
(Actually, the first line of text in the saved file designates whether English units were used or Metric units because when the user retrieves the saved file, English units will open one form and Metric units will open a separate form, so some If...Then statement will need to occur).I need to be able to read the first line, have either my "EnglishForm"form open or my "MetricForm" form open, and then have each subsequent line of text be displayed in their corresponding text boxes. I know I need to use ReadLine or LineInput, but I don't have a clue what to do.Assuming the syntax I've displayed below would just magically work (if only life were that easy), it would look something like this
If FirstLineOfTextInFile = "English" Then
EnglishForm.Show()
ElseIf FirstLineOfTextInFile = "Metric" Then[code]....
And so on...I read a lot of articles from the MSDN library and exhausted each link that I've looked through from Google and Bing, but most only retrieve data from the file to a single text box through some loop or streamreader and don't take into account multiple forms.

I am trying to import a TAB (NOt comma) delimited text file into a DataGridView. The following code works fine if I have a comma separated file. All I have to do is change the FMT to "Delimited".It just does not work with FMT=TabDelimited. All columns are read into single datatable column. The text file is ANSI text and I have double checked to make sure Tabs are tabs and not spaces, even exported a sample Tab Delimited file from Excel.Can this even be done using Text Driver? [code]

I'm a little new to VB, and I'm in a class for it, but I'm trying to do something we aren't going to learn in the class (mostly out of sheer interest) and I need help. I'm trying to read lines from a text file into a listbox, each line representing a new item on the listbox. For example, if the text file reads: [code]I want to be able to take that as is and read it into a listbox, where those words would appear in the exact same fashion; as a list, each as separate items. I've looked at the Help stuff and learned (sorta) about delimiters... but the thing is I don't want to write my entire list in a continuous line separated by commas--I want it to keep reading each line, and moving on to the next, until there are no more lines left. I am thoroughly stumped, and would appreciate it SO much if someone could help. For a frame of reference, this is the point I'm at now with my code: [code]Note that when I run the program, all it will do is read the first line of text available and stop; once I press ENTER in a text file, it decides to stop reading.
