Deployment :: Performing A Serial Port Function Halts / Locks Up On The Vista Machine
Sep 16, 2009
I have created an application using VB 2008 Express on an XP machine. I created a deployment package and installed it on other XP machines with no problems. I tried it on a Vista machine and all seemed well until performing a serial port function. It simply halts/locks up. I have to close it in task mangler. I thought I would circumvent the problem by building and publishing it on the Vista machine. While running the program from VB express the program functions perfectly on that Vista machine, but when I publish and install it on same it still crashes at the serial portion of the program.

I am working on an application on serial port communication with PLC machine. Now this communication is only done with one PLC at a time. So I m sending a query to PLC and until its responds back the application goes into wait mode. i.e. no other operations can be done, and an hourglass cursor should be displayed with all other components locked on the form. So how do I achieve this using vb.net?

im using vb 2008 to read serial port data. my requirement is as follows, when the data is received from the serial port a timer is enabling in order to blink a button saying "tank empty". so i have written the code with the aid of this forums. but now my problem is the blinking button function is not working. first i thought its cuz timer is not enabling inside the serial_dataReceived event. so i invoked a dummy label. so the timer works. but its blinking function is not working.

I have a stand alone VB.Net 2005 application that uses a serial port that generally stays open while the application runs on a Windows XP system. In trying to bullet-proof the UI, I ran into a problem when the USB to Serial Converter normally used to provide the serial port is disconnected while the serial port is open. In trying to handle the resulting error when accessing the port, I find I cannot close the port.
When trying to do so, the error message says something like "unable to close the port. You may not have sufficient permissions." Reconnecting the USB/Serial Converter does not reactivate the port.

I have just finished my application using VB in Visual Studio 2005 and it works fine on my Win 7 development machine. But when I install and run it on an XP machine it fails with an unhandled exception:System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040154): Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {E8D851FA-9967-4ADF-9644-0183B9B1EA68} failed due to the following error: 80040154.
I've googled the error message and the solutions seem to be 1) compile as x86 (was doing that anyway), and 2) register the dll on the machine But firstly I'm not sure which dll I need to register, and secondly I don't want to be going around registering dlls - the whole point of the installation programs is that it should just install and configure everything automatically..

On windows vista machine i tried uninstall old version and installed new version. But the desktop and startmenu shows old icon. Does it mean uninstall did not removed the old icon ? It works fine with windows xp.

I wonder if/how to use a 32 bit DLL on a 64 bit machine. The situation is like follows:Autocad Inventor(64 bit program) can launch plugin DLL's. The plugin DLL in this case is programmed with VB.NET 2008 Express edition. As far as I know, I can only choose "Any CPU" when building the DLL with the Express edition. This DLL makes uses of a COM object called Isah IERPlink, a piece of software that is used with a 32 bit package. So in my bin directory this DLL will be added "interop.IERPlink.dll". I guess this DLL is specified for 32 bit CPU's, but I'm not sure.

I've been reading up on asynchronous function / web pages for ASP.NET 3.5 (we're not using v4 yet) but the ones I've seen all focus on performing a background task but then still coming back to finish up and send the response, after the task is complete.
What I want to do is simply kick off the background task (in this case a call to a web service) but then return a response to the browser immediately - ie. without waiting for the asynchronous task to complete. I don't even need to know if it succeeds or not. What is the best way to do that? I can't seem to find examples of kicking off what you might call an "orphan" background task in ASP.NET.
I thought of doing it via a javascript Ajax call on the page I show to the user, but the information passed to the web service is sensitive, so that's out of the question. But that kind of illustrates what I want to do.
[ed] Another idea: Is there an event in the ASP.NET model I can use which occurs after the response has been sent to the browser and the connection closed? ie. So more processing can occur without the user waiting for it?

I have an old app, a VB5 front end with access 97 databases all works Ok using the ...program files... folders in XP but I now have a user on Vista and we have problems opening up, and I am braced for problems saving and closing down, if we ever get there.
I sent him a c# applet which found the users folder using string Dpath = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.LocalApplicationData);
I have moved the data and all settings files to a folder C:Users[Username]AppDataLocal[My app Name][My app data Path]
The start up routine checks a settings file uses the path in the settings to re-attach the front end database to a backend database, test to see if the database uses replication and set the default data path for the rest of the app. we are failing somewhere in here I am sure. I have checked and there are no updateable files in program files
Have I got the wrong path or is there something else I should be looking for?
I have an vs2008 version of the app which is using a similar location but a SQL server database- no problems

I have a class which reads the serial of the users HDD, basically so I can generate a unique license for that user based on HDD serial and other things.
This works fine in XP where UAC isn't an issue. However, when run on Vista it pops up security warnings and won't continue unless you turn UAC off!
Is there a "safe" way of reading this information without Vista throwing its lunch up?

For my application a need to set a breakstate on/off of 25ms.In Xp this runs fine when I set breakstate=true and wait for 25ms and then breakstate= false and wait 25ms.In CE6.0 when I set breakstate = true, it only throws a puls.It is even not possible to keep breakstate on.
how to solve this or is there an alternative to simulate a breakstate?

For many years, I have sent data between 2 computers using serial ports."Here is the data", "Thank you for that data!" type stuff.Where do I get more information for doing the same thing with 2 computers that are networked together? Assume a local ethernet connection.I have experimented with serial-ethernet modems and that works well but I don't want any more hardware. Is there a good thread here I should read?I want 2 VB programs running and I want to exchange data periodically.
