I need to be able to detect which version of Excel I have installed in my machine from some .NET code I'm developing. I'm currently using Application.Version for that, but it doesn't give me information about Service Packs.

View 1 RepliesI have a program to print to receipt printers and communicate with other pos hardware using the esc/pos commands and other pos device structures.It talks happily on LTP ports and COMM ports and for the last 3 years has worked well with USB printers, extracting information from the registry and connecting directly to the USB port.For all communication is uses direct calls to kernel32.dll via the win32api.The difficulty is the latest .net service packs have altered something in the communication. The USB side of the software fails to communicate on computers with .net 2 service pack 1 or above installed.
View 6 RepliesI currently have a property in my program which returns a true/false depending on if the program is "portable" or not. I need this to know if I should do a certain thing or not.
It checks if it is by checking if the registrykey the installer creates exists, here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\MyProgram
(And under the Wow node if the OS is 64 bit)
The problem is, I am trying to get rid of the need for admin rights, and this is the last function that needs to be fixed. But I don't have a clue on how.
Why I want this property is because then I don't need two separate versions of my program (like a set property in My.Settings which I set before I build).
The only files that differ using the portable vs the installer is one file, but the reason why I don't want to base the result on the existence of that file is because I want to warn the user if it's not there (if the program is not in Portable mode), so he can reinstall the program.
how I can check if the program is installed by an installer, without using admin
3 things , 1. how can i detect all the existing web browsers installed on the computer (IE , Mozilla ect'...) and put it in a combobox or something like that. 2. after i detect and select a browser , how do i launch that specific one? 3. how can i know which one is the default browser
should i see if the browser file exists ? ( IE7.exe, ect'....) or is there a more simple way ?

Surely that isn't correct? these are the actual results from running the code on a machine and reading what it says. From this information, I can't distinguish between Vista and Win2008. How do I do this? What's the difference?
I need to detect if any version of the .NET framework is installed as we are deploying a .NET 2.0 app via logon script (ie XCOPY deployment) to all PCs in our network. The .NET app will be set to start when a user logs in, so we need to determine if .NET 2.0 (or higher) is installed before we deploy the app otherwise the user will get an error each time they log in. Is there any sure fire way to detect .NET via vbscript or batch file? All of the results I have found on google don't seem to be that reliable.
I have recently written a program that detects installed programs in the same way that Add/Remove Programs does but the problem with this is that even Add/Remove Programs does not seem to show the .NET framework on all PCs that have got it installed (like my home PC for example, definitely has .NET 3.5 installed but its not in the Add/Remove Programs list).

I have created windows installer application, now when I upgrade the same I get following error nother version of the product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version ...use add remove program in control paneI changed the version number but still I get the error.. When trying to install on another PC I get the error message "Microsoft.VisualBasic.PowerPack.Vs Version 9.0.0.0 be installed in the Global Cache (GAC) first" I have already installed the .NET 3.5 and the PowerPack but I still get the message.
View 2 RepliesRecently while I was playing with VS 2008(VB), I have created an application for folder sync purpose... which is working fine. Then, I have created a windows service that does the same thing and it is also working fine(from application perspective). But, I have been trying to add some additional functionality to that new service. It keeps on running as long as System is ON.
But I would like to change the functionality to... as soon as user logs off Service should STOP, and should START when user logs into that PC. I tried to find some useful info online(related to my task) and all I could come up with was to add OnSessionChange(...) method to the service. But for some reason it is not working out for me(when I've logged off or other system events such as 'system lock').

I have read some of the other posts on this and seem to be a little different than my situation. Trying to print out some reports into an excel document on the clients machine - of course it works fine on my local (heard that before right). I went in and set my references Ms.Office.Core and Ms.Office.Interop.Excel to 'Copy Local' = True so the .dll are in the servers bin folder.

I have a project that has a need to display a Excel file in second window, but because other controls are needed, simply launching excel is not sufficient. Right now I do not know if the target machines have excel installed but I know with certainty that if they do it would be 2010, is there any method or library that allows you frame your own form around an excel window?

I need to export Chart(image) and grid (tabular) row data into excel file. I can not use automation because Office tools are not installed in my server. I've found a bunch of free/proprietary tools like:
NPOI
MyXLS
ExcelWriter (softartisans)
JetCell (DevTrio)
Aspose.Cells (Aspose)
But I do not know which one is better for my needs. I need to export not only grid row data but also Chart (image), thats why I am thinking about.
I am not sure how to do this, I need to output what service pack is installed on a windows 7 machine along with what antivirus is installed. Any idea on how I would get that information using VB?

For the moment, I've moved on and am developing my application using VS2010 Pro Beta, but I'd really like it to be able to be built with express edition, since we are generally not a .net shop and even if one or two developers have VS PRO it will not be available to our entire team.
To be the accepted answer and claim the bounty, you must provide sample code and instructions that will allow a Windows Service to be installed and uninstalled using vb 2008 express edition. You don't necessarily need to start with my code (but the essentials of it are included below).

View 7 RepliesI have a simple windows Service developed in VS.net 2008 and VB.net. When I install the service using Installutil.exe from the command prompt it is working like a charm.
When I try to add a setup project and set the output and build and install it though it says successfully installed, it is not showing up in the services.
The event log shows that it is successfully installed. I just did check the registry, it did place the assemblies in HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftinstallerassemblies.
But I don't understand why it is not showing up in the services listing. I refreshed and restarted.
I know how to use My.Computer.Info.OSFullName to get the version of the OS. How would I go about getting the Service Pack version?
I need this to work on all versions of Windows.
Also, is there a way to check and see if the activation has been successfully completed?
